Commercial Land Rovers need their own specification

Land Rover commercial leasing covers particular goods-carrying versions of familiar vehicle lines. Defender Hard Top and Discovery Commercial should be assessed on their commercial construction, not on the seating or boot figures of passenger models. That distinction matters when planning a load, comparing tax treatment or deciding whether colleagues can travel with the driver.

Defender Hard Top offers 90 and 110 formats. The shorter 90 and longer 110 have different load lengths and access arrangements, so choose the body before equipment. Discovery Commercial provides another enclosed format. None should be assumed to offer the tall rectangular load area or side-loading convenience of a purpose-built panel van.

The live IVF catalogue includes Hard Top and Commercial descriptions across model years. A listing can begin the enquiry, but the offered derivative must be identified in writing. In particular, an older specification sheet must not be applied wholesale to a newer Tempest or X-Dynamic version merely because the model name is shared.

Land Rover commercial vehicles leasing: key facts

  1. The UK manufacturer describes Defender Hard Top as an N1 commercial vehicle, with 90 and 110 body choices.
  2. Current Hard Top web figures are 1,355 litres for 90 and 2,059 litres for 110, measured by the wet-volume method.
  3. The corresponding published load lengths are 1,037 mm and 1,472 mm.
  4. Defender 110 Hard Top’s standard specification sheet separately gives 1,719 litres dry volume.
  5. The current UK Discovery page quotes 2,024 litres for Discovery Commercial.
  6. Commercial towing headlines reach 3,500 kg, subject to the exact derivative, wheels, coupling and combination limits.
  7. Front-seat options, accessories and suspension specification affect the vehicle that must be assessed.

Land Rover publishes wet and dry volumes using different measurement methods. Wet volume simulates filling the space with liquid; dry volume uses standard blocks. Neither establishes that a particular solid item will pass through the opening. Compare like measurements and check the dimensions around the actual load.

The undated 110 D250 Hard Top Standard sheet gives four seat-and-suspension weight combinations. Subtracting its EU unladen weights from the corresponding gross vehicle weights gives a calculated 682–761 kg difference. This is a transparent calculation from that sheet, not a current range-wide payload promise. Ask for the exact offered vehicle’s completed allowance before relying on it.

The older Discovery D300 Commercial technical insert gives 3,190 kg gross weight and 2,380 kg EU unladen weight, a calculated difference of 810 kg. It references earlier model years and must not establish the payload of a current Tempest Commercial. The current quotation needs its own weight schedule.

Read the commercial engine specification independently

The commercial UK material reviewed describes diesel mild-hybrid derivatives, with older technical inserts also covering other engines. Mild hybrid does not mean a plug-in vehicle that can run the working route from an external charge. Check the exact fuel and engine code on the proposed commercial derivative.

Do not transfer an electric or plug-in claim from the wider Land Rover passenger range to Hard Top or Discovery Commercial. If zero-emission operation is essential, compare a confirmed electric van elsewhere in the estate. The right commercial body and its actual powertrain must satisfy the requirement together.

Check the opening, partition and storage before choosing the body

Measure the equipment at its widest and tallest points, including handles and cases. Then check the rear opening and the path into the load area. A generous volume can still be unsuitable for a rigid cabinet, a long tool or an item that cannot be tilted. The shorter Defender 90 needs particular attention where load length is fixed.

For Defender 110, assess the value of the additional side access and underfloor storage. Small tools may fit in those compartments while bulky goods occupy the main floor, but compartment volumes should not be added again to a total that already includes them. Ask the supplier to explain the measurement basis and demonstrate the arrangement.

Racking and drawers can make a commercial Land Rover more useful, but they consume carrying capacity. Include restraints, protective lining and every accessory in the completed weight assessment. Confirm that the installation leaves safe access to equipment and does not conflict with the partition, seat configuration or funder’s return conditions.

Front seats are part of the commercial choice

Defender Hard Top can be specified with a front jump seat in the manufacturer’s current material. Confirm whether the offered vehicle actually has it; a photograph of a three-seat cabin does not establish the specification of every listing. Seat choice also changes the weights shown in the technical sheet.

Discovery Commercial should not be assessed as a seven-seat family Discovery with the rear seats temporarily folded. It is a distinct commercial configuration. If the business needs a regular second row, identify that requirement before choosing the vehicle, because restoring passenger seating is not a routine assumption for a leased commercial body.

Business leasing, VAT and the accounts

A commercial Land Rover proposal should include the approval and registration description as well as the model name. Your accountant needs to know which vehicle is being supplied and how it will be used. A similar-looking passenger version may produce a different tax assessment, even if the equipment or engine seems familiar.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

For a vehicle treated as a commercial vehicle for VAT, a VAT-registered business can normally recover VAT attributable to taxable business use, subject to the ordinary input-tax rules. Private use needs appropriate treatment, and partial exemption or the Flat Rate Scheme can change recovery. There is no automatic full reclaim just because the invoice says van. Equally, the car-rental 50% block must not simply be copied onto a genuine commercial van.

Ask your accountant to distinguish VAT classification, employment-benefit classification and business deductions. They answer different questions. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance and the IVF VAT guide with the actual commercial-vehicle documents; car examples are not van rules.

Private agreements and mixed use

A private individual may have a practical reason to use an enclosed commercial body, but agreement availability and permitted use still need confirmation. Explain towing, business journeys and fitted equipment to the funder and insurer. Compare the actual commercial specification and full VAT-inclusive cost basis relevant to the individual.

For an employer-provided vehicle, set out who can use it and for which journeys. Taking tools home does not by itself settle the private-use exemption, and a commercial badge does not replace the construction and use tests. Keep the policy consistent with how the vehicle is operated.

Van benefit and company-vehicle tax

The manufacturer identifies Defender Hard Top as an N1 commercial vehicle, but separate tax rules still need their own application. Do not copy a passenger Defender’s company-car calculation onto a qualifying van, or assume that every Land Rover in a business agreement receives van treatment.

Discovery Commercial also requires its own documentation and use assessment. The V5C tax class, employment-benefit classification and VAT treatment answer different questions. High purchase value alone does not move an N1 goods vehicle into the car Expensive Car Supplement rules. Confirm the actual arrangement with your accountant.

For 2026/27, the standard taxable benefit for a qualifying company van available for unrestricted private use is £4,170. That is the benefit value, not the employee’s tax bill: personal tax depends on the individual’s tax rate and any permitted reductions. Employer-provided private fuel can create a separate £798 taxable benefit. These are tax amounts, not vehicle rentals.

Business journeys and ordinary commuting can fall within the restricted-private-use exemption where the conditions are met and any other private use is insignificant. A written use policy and evidence of how the vehicle is actually used matter. A sole trader using their own vehicle does not simply apply an employee benefit figure to themselves.

A qualifying zero-emission van has a £0 van benefit value under current rules. Do not substitute the electric company-car percentage for this van treatment. Conversely, an electric passenger vehicle or a pickup treated as a car does not obtain the van exemption simply because it appears in a commercial catalogue.

These van cash figures are checked for 2026/27 only. Do not hold them flat in a forecast for 2027/28, 2028/29 or 2029/30: check each year’s published rules. Where the supplied vehicle is a company car, the published zero-emission car percentages are 4%, 5%, 7% and 9% across those four years; the maximum car bands are 37%, 37%, 38% and 39%. The actual car’s CO2, fuel, P11D value and eligibility determine its band.

Check HMRC’s van benefit values, the private-use exemptions and our company-car tax guide. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change. Have your accountant confirm classification and the treatment of your agreement before ordering.

Road tax and future charges

Vehicle Excise Duty. The 2026/27 annual rate for most light goods vehicles registered from 1 March 2001 in the relevant tax class is £360. Specific older emissions classes and other registration categories can differ. Electric vans are not generally exempt. Check the V5C tax class and whether your funder passes on future increases. GOV.UK lists the light-goods rates.

Expensive Car Supplement. The car supplement does not automatically apply to an N1 goods vehicle because it has a high purchase price. Where car VED rules do apply, the 2026/27 supplement is £440 annually for five years from the second licence, above the relevant original list-price threshold: £40,000 for combustion and hybrid cars, or £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. A company-car benefit classification does not itself change the VED class. Use the official VED tables and the registration documents.

Planned eVED. The proposed electric Vehicle Excise Duty from April 2028 covers electric and plug-in hybrid cars; vans are outside its stated scope. It is not a mileage charge currently payable on an electric van. Check the final legislation, vehicle classification and funder terms if an agreement extends beyond introduction. Read the government response.

Assess fuel and towing costs in working conditions

A towing or site-access requirement should be included in the fuel estimate from the outset. Roof equipment, fitted storage, load and trailer use can change the result compared with an unladen road test. Use the same workload when comparing Defender 90, Defender 110 and Discovery Commercial.

The headline 3,500 kg towing figure needs a derivative check. The older Discovery Commercial insert includes wheel-specific towing restrictions, which demonstrates why equipment cannot be ignored. Obtain the current vehicle’s approved limit, nose-weight allowance and gross train weight rather than transferring the highest published figure to every combination.

For frequent urban work, assess parking, turning and loading access alongside fuel. A commercial Land Rover may meet a difficult access requirement, but a panel van may handle repeated collections or bulky loads more conveniently. The operational comparison should make that trade-off visible before the agreement is chosen.

Plan maintenance beyond the Land Rover warranty headline

Land Rover’s UK ownership page states a three-year manufacturer warranty from first registration, subject to its terms. Request the booklet applicable to the supplied commercial vehicle and clarify any mileage or use conditions. A four-year agreement, for example, should not be assumed to have manufacturer cover for its whole term.

The published exclusions distinguish normal maintenance and wear from covered defects, and do not promise reimbursement for every consequence of downtime. Check servicing, tyres, replacement transport and the cover for fitted equipment separately. Choose a support arrangement that matches the business’s reliance on the vehicle.

How IVF builds your quotation

For Land Rover, send IVF the required commercial body, front-seat count, measured equipment and trailer details. Ask for the exact model year, engine, wheels and completed weights. If a catalogue description and technical sheet differ, resolve the version before comparing agreement terms.

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Intelligent Vehicle Finance checks the requirement against its panel of funders. A written proposal should identify the initial rental, subsequent rentals, contract length, mileage allowance, selected services and applicable fees. Assess equivalent vehicles and agreement terms together; a different body, weight class or maintenance package changes the comparison.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied vehicle’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

Compare the commercial vehicle that will actually be supplied

Arrange a loading assessment around the largest item and the normal working kit. Use it to choose between the Hard Top lengths and Discovery Commercial, then specify storage and seating. Request a current weight schedule for the finished vehicle instead of relying on the older comparison calculations above.

The model routes below provide a starting point for the enquiry. Current availability, any fitted equipment and the funder’s acceptance need individual confirmation. Keep the approval documents and towing requirements with the proposal so the physical and financial decisions refer to the same vehicle.

Land Rover commercial vehicles leasing questions

Which Land Rover commercial models are covered?

The comparison covers Defender Hard Top 90 and 110 and Discovery Commercial. They require their own commercial specifications. Passenger Defender and Discovery seating or luggage figures should not be applied automatically.

Is Defender Hard Top an N1 commercial vehicle?

The current UK manufacturer page describes it as N1. Obtain the offered derivative’s approval and registration documents as well. VAT, employment benefits and vehicle taxation still require the relevant separate assessments.

How do Defender 90 and 110 load areas differ?

The current Hard Top page lists load lengths of 1,037 mm for 90 and 1,472 mm for 110. Measure the intended goods and the opening, and assess whether the 110’s additional access suits the working pattern.

Why are wet and dry load volumes different?

Wet volume simulates filling the space with liquid, while dry volume uses standard blocks. They measure different things. Compare the same method and check whether the actual item can pass through the opening.

Can I use the old technical sheet’s payload for a new quote?

Only if the offered specification is confirmed to match. Seat count, suspension, equipment and model year can change weights. The calculated examples on this page are scoped references, not promises for every current derivative.

Does Hard Top always have three seats?

No. The manufacturer describes an available front jump-seat arrangement, but the supplied vehicle must be checked. The technical sheet distinguishes two- and three-seat versions, with different weight figures.

Is Discovery Commercial a seven-seat vehicle?

It must be assessed as its own commercial configuration, not as the passenger Discovery with seats folded. If the job needs a regular second row, confirm a suitable vehicle before progressing the lease enquiry.

Can every commercial Land Rover tow 3,500 kg?

Do not assume that. Check the current derivative, wheel and coupling specification, nose weight and combination limits. Older Discovery Commercial documentation includes equipment-specific restrictions, so the highest headline cannot be transferred to every vehicle.

What warranty does Land Rover publish?

The UK ownership page states a three-year manufacturer warranty from first registration, subject to terms. Confirm the applicable commercial vehicle booklet and separate arrangements for maintenance, fitted equipment and replacement transport.

What information helps a Land Rover commercial quote?

Provide the body and front-seat requirement, measured goods, accessories, towing details and annual mileage. Ask for the exact UK commercial derivative and current completed weights, with business or personal use stated clearly.
