The First BMW iX4: Orders Open, Up To 514 Miles, And How It Is Taxed As A Company Car

BMW has opened UK orders for its first iX4, an electric SUV coupé built alongside the new iX3. It starts from £60,170 on the road, BMW quotes up to 514 miles of WLTP range for the longer-range version, and first UK deliveries are due from 6 March 2027. For a company car driver that timing matters: the electric benefit percentage is 4% until 5 April 2027, then 5% in 2027/28, 7% in 2028/29 and 9% in 2029/30. Here is what BMW has confirmed, what the iX4 costs in tax, and what to check before you order.

  • Orders and deliveries: BMW says the iX4 is available to order now from its UK retailers, with first deliveries from 6 March 2027. The M60 xDrive follows in spring 2027, and its UK price has not been announced.
  • Charging: the 50 xDrive charges from 10% to 80% in 21 minutes on BMW's figures. BMW has not published a 10–80% time for the 40 xDrive.
  • Performance: 374hp and 0–62mph in 5.6 seconds for the 40 xDrive; 469hp and 4.9 seconds for the 50 xDrive; 612hp and 3.9 seconds for the M60 xDrive.
  • Towing: an electrically extending towbar rated at up to 2,000kg is an option on selected versions. Check the exact version if you tow.
  • Where it is built: at BMW's plant in Debrecen, Hungary, alongside the iX3. The iX3 40 starts from £53,250 OTR with up to 395 miles of WLTP range, so the iX4 40 xDrive adds the coupé roofline and all-wheel drive for £6,920 more.

BMW says its output, range, charging and performance figures are provisional. Real-world range will be lower in cold weather and at sustained motorway speeds.

How the iX4 is taxed as a company car

The company car taxable benefit is a percentage of the car's P11D value, broadly its list price including options and VAT but excluding the first registration fee and first year's vehicle tax. The driver's income tax rate is then applied to that benefit. Every iX4 emits 0g/km, so it is taxed at the electric rate. HMRC has set that rate at 4% for 2026/27 and 5% for 2027/28, and has announced 7% for 2028/29 and 9% for 2029/30.

2027/285%£600£1,200£450

2029/309%£1,080£2,160£810
Sum of the full-year figures£2,520£5,040£1,890

These figures assume full tax years with no employee contributions or availability adjustments; part-year use needs a corresponding adjustment. For comparison, a petrol or diesel car with the same P11D value in the 37% band would cost a 40% taxpayer £8,880 in company car tax in a single year. The Class 1A figures assume the employer rate stays at 15%. Our company car tax guide has every band to 2030, and the company car tax calculator works out your own figure from the exact P11D value and your tax rate.

Running costs beyond company car tax

  • Expensive Car Supplement: the priced 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive versions exceed the £50,000 list price threshold for electric cars, so they pay the supplement on top of the standard rate for five years from the second tax payment. The supplement is £440 a year in 2026/27, and Budget 2026 announced an RPI increase in vehicle tax rates from 1 April 2027, subject to legislation. Do not assume the £440 cash rate stays fixed for all five years. Read how the threshold works. On contract hire the funder usually taxes the car and recovers the cost through the rental.
  • Pay-per-mile tax from April 2028: under eVED, electric cars are due to pay 3p a mile, on top of vehicle tax. At 10,000 miles a year that would be £300. It is proposed and not yet law: what eVED means on a lease.
  • Electric Car Grant: the priced iX4 versions are outside the grant's price limits, so do not budget for a grant on these cars.
  • Charging at home: Budget 2026 announced an extension of the temporary 0% VAT rate for qualifying domestic electricity through 30 June 2027, with secondary legislation to follow. That would cover home charging during the first months of iX4 ownership: what that means for home charging.

What it means for you

  • Company car drivers: the electric benefit percentage is 5% in 2027/28. A March delivery can also fall partly in 2026/27, when the percentage is 4%. Compare cars on the rates for the years you will actually drive them, not on today's 4%.
  • Directors and finance leads: Class 1A National Insurance follows the same percentage, so an electric car keeps the employer's cost down as well as the driver's. A VAT-registered business leasing a car with private use can normally recover 50% of the VAT on the rental.
  • Choosing between the two batteries: the 50 xDrive adds about 118 miles of WLTP range and faster charging for £5,905 more. Higher list price means a higher P11D value, so the tax rises with it. If most of your trips sit well inside 396 miles, the 40 xDrive may be all you need.
  • Timing: with deliveries from March 2027, an order placed now is a 2027 car. Ask for the expected build and delivery month with any quote, and check whether your current agreement ends before then.

What to check before you order

  • Confirmed figures. BMW's range and charging figures are provisional. Ask for the confirmed figures for the exact version and options you are quoted.
  • Options. M Sport Pro and other options raise the P11D value, and therefore the tax.
  • Your journeys and charging. Check where you would charge at home, at work and on longer trips.
  • The alternative. If you do not need the coupé roofline, the BMW iX3 shares the same technology from a lower price.
