Your smart #3 leasing decision

Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps business and private drivers compare smart #3 leasing. This five-seat electric model combines a coupe-style roofline with Pro, Pro+, Premium and BRABUS choices in current UK specifications. Assess rear access, charging equipment and battery choice before selecting the exact derivative and lease terms.

smart #3 business and personal leasing: test the shape first

The #3 is for drivers who want a five-seat electric car with a lower, coupe-influenced profile. That shape is a reason to see it in person, rather than assume its rear-seat experience matches a more upright crossover. For an individual company-car driver, the combination may suit commuting and client visits. For a private household, start by checking whether the people and luggage that travel together fit comfortably.

The key compromise is not simply battery size. Rear access, headroom, visibility and your preferred driving position all belong in the decision. If a tall passenger regularly sits behind the driver, take that person to the demonstration. If effortless access or carrying bulky objects matters more than the roofline, compare the more upright smart #1 and a different compact electric car such as Volvo EX30 before settling on #3.

smart #3 leasing: key facts

  • smart UK specifications list Pro, Pro+, Premium and BRABUS as battery-electric versions.
  • Pro has a 49kWh gross/47kWh usable battery; the other current listed versions have 66kWh gross/62kWh usable batteries.
  • Pro, Pro+ and Premium are rear-wheel drive; BRABUS is all-wheel drive.
  • The manufacturer specifies five seats and a 370-litre boot, on its published measurement basis.
  • smart’s standard UK vehicle warranty is three years with unlimited mileage; the battery has a separate policy.
  • GOV.UK: zero-emission company-car BiK is 4% in 2026/27, rising to 9% in 2029/30.

Four current UK versions and one older catalogue label

smart’s UK technical table, checked on 28 September 2026, covers Pro, Pro+, Premium and BRABUS. The IVF capture contains those names plus a 25th Anniversary Edition record. Treat that additional edition as a vehicle-specific sourcing question; it is not evidence that the current manufacturer range has five equivalent versions. Ask for its model year and complete specification if it is the car under discussion.

Pro uses the smaller gross-capacity battery. Pro+, Premium and BRABUS share a larger published battery capacity, but do not share every other characteristic. BRABUS adds all-wheel drive, while the other current versions are rear-wheel drive. Decide separately whether you need the battery, convenience equipment or performance emphasis of a particular version. Choosing the most powerful badge does not automatically improve the way the car fits your routine.

Gross and usable battery capacities must be compared consistently. IVF’s labels use the gross figures, while a charging or energy calculation may use usable capacity. Mixing the two creates a misleading impression of efficiency or charging time. Request the exact UK technical sheet for the car offered and retain it with the quotation, including wheels and any equipment that changes the certified figures.

Charging equipment can matter more than the trim name

The current smart table distinguishes the Pro’s AC charging equipment from that of the larger-battery versions. That can matter at a workplace or destination with the appropriate electrical supply. It does not mean a car automatically receives its maximum AC input from every home installation. Ask the installer or charging provider what your location actually supplies, then match that to the quoted car’s onboard charger.

For a business driver who parks at different sites, establish whether access is dependable, how payment works and what happens outside office hours. For a private driver, consider how another household car shares the parking space and whether cables obstruct access. A charging plan needs to work on a wet evening after a long day, not just look possible on a charger map.

Use the rear seats and boot during the demonstration

The #3 has five seats in its published specification, but the usefulness of each seat depends on the people using it. Put the front seats where the usual occupants need them before assessing the rear. Try getting in without lowering your head unnaturally, then sit for long enough to notice the roofline and foot space. Check child-seat access and the seat-belt buckles with the intended seats installed.

smart’s boot figure is useful as a manufacturer measurement, not a substitute for a loading trial. The opening, floor shape and parcel shelf can determine whether a work case or pushchair fits. If an item must be placed on a folded rear seat, decide whether that arrangement leaves the passenger capacity you require. Secure equipment appropriately and confirm the vehicle’s permitted load for a regular business carrying task.

Pro, Premium or BRABUS: make each upgrade earn its place

For Pro, start with whether the smaller battery and its charging equipment meet the actual mileage pattern. For Pro+ and Premium, compare the written equipment differences rather than assuming the shared battery means they are identical. For BRABUS, assess whether the all-wheel-drive performance character is what you want, including the insurance and tyre implications of the exact vehicle.

Take a representative road test that includes the surfaces you use most. Judge seat support, ride comfort, parking visibility and how predictable the car feels at ordinary speeds. An impressive acceleration figure cannot answer those questions. If the proposed lease car has different wheels from the demonstrator, ask how that affects its certified figures and arrange a more representative comparison where possible.

smart’s warranty documents distinguish the vehicle, high-voltage core components and traction battery. Those categories have different terms, and included service arrangements should be confirmed separately for the supplied car. Request a clear list of what the lease and any manufacturer package cover. Then compare #3 with #1 and EX30 on the same mileage and term, keeping passenger fit, charging and total obligations visible alongside the rental.

smart #3 company-car tax across the lease

smart #3 has zero tailpipe CO2 in the UK specification. A company-car comparison still needs the exact P11D value, personal tax position and each tax year crossed. Treat BRABUS equipment and options as part of the actual vehicle calculation, not a generic model estimate.

For an employee or director with private use, the taxable benefit normally starts with the car’s P11D value multiplied by the applicable BiK percentage. Personal tax then depends on the individual’s income tax rate and any relevant adjustments. The percentage is not the tax rate applied to the lease rental. A sole trader’s own business car use follows different rules.

The agreement can cross several tax years. Compare the whole path, not just the percentage in the year the car arrives.

Tax information checked 28 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.

Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is currently £440 a year for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.

Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.

VAT and the business accounts

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.

Businesses using the VAT Flat Rate Scheme do not normally recover input VAT on recurring car hire. The separate capital-goods exception does not turn hire invoices into a vehicle purchase. Check HMRC’s Flat Rate Scheme guidance.

A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Build the quotation around the way you will use it

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

smart #3 leasing questions

Is smart #3 an electric car?

Yes. The current UK smart #3 range is battery-electric and has five seats. There is no petrol powertrain in the UK technical table reviewed for this page. Check your charging access and the exact battery version before comparing business or personal leasing terms.

Which smart #3 versions are current?

smart UK lists Pro, Pro+, Premium and BRABUS. The IVF capture also includes a 25th Anniversary Edition entry, which needs an individual model-year and availability check. A retained catalogue label should not be treated as another current production trim without confirmation.

What battery does smart #3 use?

Pro is listed with 49kWh gross and 47kWh usable capacity. Pro+, Premium and BRABUS use 66kWh gross and 62kWh usable capacity in the current UK table. Match those figures to the supplied vehicle; gross capacity and usable energy are not interchangeable measurements.

Is every smart #3 all-wheel drive?

No. The current UK specification identifies BRABUS as all-wheel drive, with Pro, Pro+ and Premium using rear-wheel drive. Consider the specific driving experience and equipment you need. A larger battery does not itself mean the car has the BRABUS drivetrain.

How does smart #3 compare with smart #1?

Assess #3 for its coupe-style profile and #1 as a separate, more upright body choice. Try rear access, seating and your actual luggage in both. Do not infer identical equipment, charging behaviour or available derivatives from the shared brand and similar naming.

Will the smart #3 suit rear passengers?

Take the regular passengers to a demonstration and set the front seats correctly first. Its five-seat specification does not answer individual headroom, child-seat access or comfort requirements. The roofline is a particular reason to test entry and seating in person before ordering.

Does smart #3 charge at the same speed in every trim?

The manufacturer’s table distinguishes AC equipment between versions, and the charging location also limits the result. DC rapid charging is a different process. Obtain the current technical sheet for the exact car and avoid applying one charging-time headline to the whole range.

What warranty is offered with smart #3?

The UK terms state a three-year vehicle warranty with unlimited mileage. Separate high-voltage cover has its own time, mileage and capacity conditions. Check the supplied vehicle’s warranty certificate and any service package rather than assuming every component has identical cover.

How is company-car tax calculated for smart #3?

For a qualifying zero-emission company car, use the annual electric-car percentage and the exact P11D value, then the driver’s income tax position. Review the whole lease period and any VED supplement. The BiK percentage is not the percentage of the rental paid as tax.

What does IVF need for a smart #3 quote?

Specify the version, essential equipment, annual mileage and intended term, plus charging access and preferred timing. The grid shows rental figures; the written quotation confirms initial rental, maintenance choices and applicable fees. Insurance, availability and funder approval need their own checks.
