Intelligent Vehicle Finance’s Volkswagen ID.5 leasing guide covers the electric coupé-SUV and its distinct choice beside ID.4. Volkswagen UK still presents ID.5 in September 2026. Compare rear access, luggage shape and the exact battery version before choosing business or personal leasing; mixed catalogue labels require vehicle-specific confirmation rather than a single range promise.
The ID.5 belongs on a shortlist when the preference for a coupé-SUV shape is deliberate and the car still needs to work as everyday transport. It shares an electric-family context with ID.4, but the body decision deserves its own examination. Rear passengers, luggage height and the view from the driving seat are more useful comparison points than treating the two model names as interchangeable.
A company driver may want an electric car with a particular appearance for work and private travel. A household may be drawn to the same shape while still needing child-seat access and holiday luggage space. Both are reasonable starting preferences. The body must then prove that it handles those needs without compromises that become frustrating every week.
If loading bulky items or accommodating particular rear passengers dominates the decision, compare ID.4 directly. If the SUV format serves no clear purpose, investigate ID.3. The ID.5 is most persuasive when its styling preference and practical performance in your own test agree. It should not win simply because an electric-tax percentage is shared across otherwise different vehicles.
| Route | Primary decision | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| ID.5 | Prefer coupé-SUV styling within an electric brief | Test rear access and usable luggage height for the selected car. |
| ID.4 | Consider the SUV-bodied sibling | Compare the body shape with the same passenger and load needs. |
| ID.3 | Consider an electric hatchback instead | Reassess footprint and cabin requirements if an SUV is unnecessary. |
Volkswagen UK still presents the ID.5 with model and technical information on 24 September 2026. That establishes a current UK reference, while the actual proposed vehicle and supply position remain separate checks. A manufacturer’s model page is not a commitment that IVF can provide every listed specification or match a particular delivery timetable.
The captured IVF route contains Match Pure descriptions labelled 52 and 58 kWh. Essential Pro, Match Pro and Black Edition Pro appear with 77 or 79 kWh labels, while 4MOTION GTX Edition is also shown with both 77 and 79 kWh descriptions. The table therefore spans more than one technical identity and should not be read as a single battery range.
Ask which model year, usable battery capacity and motor specification belong to the offered car. The current manufacturer overview does not, by itself, resolve every catalogue label. In particular, do not take the highest published family range and attach it to a Pure derivative, or assume that two similar Pro descriptions have identical charging data.
Bring the regular rear passengers into the comparison early. Set the driver’s seat properly, then check entry, head clearance and the seated position behind. If you use a child seat, test fitting and lifting the child in under the roof opening. An adult’s comfortable seated headroom and convenient access for a child seat are related but different questions.
For luggage, consider height and shape rather than capacity alone. A sloping roof can make the usable envelope important for stacked cases or a bulky object even when a volume figure looks adequate. Try the actual load below the intended cover and confirm how it will be secured. Do not rely on a photograph with the rear seats folded when your trip needs them occupied.
Look at rearward visibility and the parking assistance fitted to the particular trim. Then repeat the same exercise with ID.4. The aim is not to declare one body universally better, but to establish whether the ID.5’s chosen shape fits the task without an inconvenience you would rather avoid. That is the distinct decision this page supports.
The UK overview’s published range span is a family benchmark. Your proposal needs a more precise statement tied to its model year, battery, motor, wheels and equipment. Weather, speed, cabin heating and load affect the distance achieved. A quoted WLTP figure is useful for comparing certified specifications, not for promising a journey with no stop.
Start with a charging routine that works on ordinary days. Establish access where the vehicle spends the night, the charging equipment available and any restrictions on that space. For workplace charging, check what happens when bays are occupied and whether colleagues can use the car without losing access to the planned charging arrangement.
For longer travel, identify stops that fit your normal route and leave a sensible margin rather than planning around the maximum displayed figure. Charging power also varies through a session and with conditions. Ask for the exact car’s AC and DC capabilities and any relevant battery-preparation requirements. We do not infer a charge duration across the mixed 52, 58, 77 and 79 kWh catalogue descriptions.
The trim and powertrain descriptions need to be unpacked together. If you want a particular seat function, camera arrangement or lighting feature, verify it on the proposed specification. Equipment attached to a Black Edition demonstration car is not proof of what an Essential Pro carries. The written schedule should identify the options that matter to your daily use.
A GTX enquiry should be intentional about the performance and driven-wheel arrangement. Compare insurance, tyre responsibilities and maintenance provisions on the actual derivative. The ability to accelerate more quickly does not answer the passenger-access or charging questions, and it does not establish a longer electric range. Those remain separate parts of the decision.
For a business, distinguish the driver’s preference from fleet requirements. The electric BiK category may be common, but P11D, equipment and contract commitments can differ. Ask for a proposal that records why the selected version is suitable. For a private driver, use the same discipline to avoid moving between variants without understanding which practical benefit the change delivers.
For an ID.5 provided to an employee or director with private use, the zero-emission BiK path is the relevant starting category. The taxable amount still depends on the particular car’s P11D and the individual’s position. Compare Pro and GTX proposals across every year of the contract, not just the opening percentage.
P11D multiplied by the electric percentage establishes the starting taxable benefit for private availability, followed by the driver’s income-tax rate and any adjustments. Two ID.5 trims can therefore create different personal liabilities even though they share the same emissions category.
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-emission electric car | 4% | 5% | 7% | 9% |
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 24 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). Zero-emission cars have a £10 first-year VED rate in 2026/27. An ID.5 under the relevant registration rules then uses the £200 standard annual payment before supplements. Later annual cash rates need checking; electric propulsion no longer means a blanket road-tax exemption.
Expensive Car Supplement. For an ID.5 registered from 1 April 2025, an original list price above £50,000 triggers the relevant supplement. It is £440 annually in 2026/27 for five years from the second licence. Count applicable options before discounts and check the registration date rather than inferring liability from trim alone. Check GOV.UK vehicle-tax rules.
Planned eVED. Planned eVED for electric cars starts at 3p per mile from April 2028, additional to ordinary VED, subject to legislation and implementation. Proposed CPI uprating starts 2029/30; later cash rates are unconfirmed. Request the funder’s written approach for an ID.5 agreement spanning introduction. Read the eVED proposal.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

Volkswagen UK still presents ID.5 model and technical information as checked on 24 September 2026. A particular vehicle and its supply position must nevertheless be confirmed separately with IVF. No stock or delivery commitment follows from the manufacturer page.
The ID.5 addresses a coupé-SUV body preference, while ID.4 is the SUV-bodied sibling. Test rear access, head clearance and the shape of the luggage space with your actual passengers and loads. A shared electric context does not make the bodies interchangeable.
Assume none until the proposed car is identified. The captured table includes 52, 58, 77 and 79 kWh labels across different descriptions. Request the model year and usable battery specification, then match range and charging data to that precise vehicle.
No. The manufacturer’s family range span covers different specifications. The offered car’s certified figure depends on its battery, motor, wheels and equipment, while actual travel is affected by conditions and use. The family maximum must not be applied to every catalogue row.
Do not infer longer range from the GTX performance positioning. Check the actual vehicle’s certified range and charging capability, then assess its equipment and operating responsibilities. The right long-journey choice depends on your route, stopping preferences and passenger needs.
Test the exact arrangement you need, including child-seat access and luggage height with the rear seats occupied. The coupé-SUV shape deserves a practical assessment. Compare ID.4 if that loading or passenger task matters more than the styling preference.
When a hatchback could meet the same electric travel requirement and the SUV format is not essential. Check parking, passenger accommodation and luggage needs on each car. Compare specific vehicles and charging requirements rather than assuming a larger body is automatically more useful.
IVF can discuss both contract routes, subject to vehicle confirmation, status and funder criteria. State who will take the agreement, annual mileage, charging access and essential equipment. The quotation needs to identify the battery and model year as well as the trim.
No. The published zero-emission BiK path changes over the tax years covered in this guide. Personal liability also depends on P11D and the individual’s tax position. Review the full term with your accountant rather than treating the opening percentage as fixed.
Compare the contract basis, insurance, charging, maintenance and applicable road-tax provisions. Check the list-price and registration conditions for any supplement, and the funder’s treatment of planned eVED. These are separate from the vehicle-specific company-car benefit calculation.
