Your BYD Dolphin G leasing decision

Intelligent Vehicle Finance’s Dolphin G guide covers BYD’s UK Dolphin G DM-i plug-in hybrid, not the electric Dolphin or Dolphin Surf. BYD announced UK ordering in July 2026. For a business pool car or considered private second car, compare battery specification and charging access, then confirm the actual vehicle with IVF.

BYD Dolphin G business and personal leasing: identify the car first

The most useful starting answer is that Dolphin G means the Dolphin G DM-i plug-in hybrid in BYD’s UK range. It is a separate buyer decision from the battery-electric Dolphin and Dolphin Surf. That distinction matters when a business is choosing staff transport or a private household wants a second car that will also make occasional longer journeys.

The G’s rationale is a regular local charging routine with petrol available for other travel. It should not be selected merely because it sounds like another version of an electric Dolphin. If the requirement is to remove petrol use from the vehicle altogether, take the enquiry to the electric siblings. If external charging is impractical, consider whether a plug-in arrangement actually addresses your needs.

BYD Dolphin G leasing: key facts

  • BYD UK names the model Dolphin G DM-i and identifies it as a plug-in hybrid hatchback.
  • The 9 July 2026 UK press announcement states that orders were open; its delivery forecast is not an IVF delivery commitment.
  • Active has a 7.4 kWh battery in that UK release; Boost moves to 18.3 kWh. Confirm the quoted model year before applying those specifications.
  • The same release lists 3.3 kW AC charging for Active and 6.6 kW AC plus up to 39 kW DC for Boost; charger conditions and the exact vehicle govern performance.
  • IVF lists Active, 212 Boost, 212 Comfort and 212 Sport, all as Petrol Parallel PHEV. Dolphin and Dolphin Surf are separate electric routes.
  • GOV.UK: the maximum company-car BiK band is 37% in 2026/27 and 39% in 2029/30; the exact car can fall in a lower band.

UK status and the four derivatives on the IVF route

BYD’s UK press office announced the Dolphin G DM-i range on 9 July 2026 and stated that ordering was open. Its timetable for first customer deliveries was a manufacturer forecast. It is not evidence that IVF holds cars, that a particular version has arrived, or that an individual customer can obtain it within a stated period. Ask for the proposed vehicle’s actual position.

The captured IVF route lists 1.5 DM-i Active and 1.5 DM-i 212 Boost, Comfort and Sport, each described as an automatic plug-in hybrid hatchback. That supports a distinct page alongside the electric Dolphin routes. It does not support importing specifications from similarly named cars in other markets, or treating a shortened catalogue title as a different UK model.

The most important early comparison is Active against Boost because the UK launch specifications change the battery and charging arrangement. Comfort and Sport require their own equipment check after the powertrain decision. Identify the complete derivative and model year in writing. If a proposal abbreviates the model to Dolphin, ask for clarification before comparing it with another quotation.

Active versus Boost: choose around the time parked

The UK launch release gives Active a smaller battery and a different AC charging rating from Boost. It also introduces DC charging with Boost. These are meaningful specification differences, but a maximum power figure is not a fixed charging speed or a duration. The supply equipment, battery state and vehicle conditions affect what a charging session delivers.

Begin with the time the car spends at a reliable charging location. An overnight space at home or a predictable period at a workplace can make routine charging straightforward. A rotating pool car may need a named person to connect it and a parking policy that keeps the charging bay accessible. Without that routine, a larger battery may remain an unused capability.

For occasional longer trips, compare a planned stop with simply continuing on petrol under the vehicle’s normal operating strategy. Do not assume public DC charging will always be the most practical or economical option for a PHEV. The vehicle should fit your travel pattern rather than requiring you to design every journey around reaching a headline electric distance.

A pool-car brief differs from a private second-car brief

For a pool car, list the expected drivers and where each journey starts and ends. If the car usually returns to one business base, charging and handover can be organised centrally. If staff routinely take it home, the arrangements become more individual. Calling a vehicle a pool car does not itself settle its tax treatment or whether private availability exists.

Check whether the cabin works for staff who will drive it only occasionally. Make sure the essential controls, charging connection and key arrangements can be explained without a lengthy handover. Establish how a driver reports a charging fault and what happens if the planned bay is occupied. This is a practical operating process, not a promise that the technology will suit every workplace.

For a private second car, define what the second car must still do independently. It may need to carry children, accept shopping and manage a longer trip when the other household car is unavailable. Test those circumstances before reducing the brief to town use alone. The choice between G and its electric siblings should follow these requirements and genuine charging access.

A distinct choice beside Dolphin and Dolphin Surf

Compare the three names by propulsion and usable space before equipment. An electric Dolphin does not carry the same petrol-and-electric decision as Dolphin G. Dolphin Surf has its own compact-car layout. A manufacturer family name is a signpost, not a technical specification, and a photograph of one should never be used to establish another’s dimensions or features.

For the Dolphin G, test rear-seat access with the actual passengers or equipment involved. Check the boot opening and where charging leads would be stored. If a child seat or staff work case makes the car inconvenient, moving to a different trim may not solve the underlying packaging issue. Consider the appropriate sibling on its own merits instead.

BYD Dolphin G company-car tax across the lease

The Dolphin G is a plug-in hybrid, so the electric-car BiK path does not apply simply because the name resembles Dolphin. The smaller and larger battery versions also require separate certified-range checks. The under-30-mile and 40-69-mile rows below are tax thresholds, not promised driving distances for a quoted car.

Where a Dolphin G is privately available to an employee, P11D multiplied by the relevant percentage is the starting taxable benefit. Personal liability then reflects the driver’s income-tax rate and adjustments. A genuine pool-car exemption needs its own conditions checked; the label does not settle it.

Company-car BiK benchmarks, 2026/27 to 2029/30
Tax specification2026/272027/282028/292029/30
Qualifying PHEV: 1-50 g/km; certified electric range under 30 miles16%17%18%19%
Qualifying PHEV: 1-50 g/km; certified electric range 40-69 miles10%11%18%19%

These are conditional tax bands, not assigned rates for every BYD Dolphin G. Confirm the supplied car’s P11D, certified CO2, fuel type and registration date. Diesel supplements can apply where the required emissions certification is absent, subject to the annual maximum.

The electric-mile figures above are HMRC band thresholds, not promises of this car’s driving range. Newer plug-in hybrid certification can show more than 50 g/km. A temporary company-car easement may treat an eligible car as 1 g/km where the registration date, electric range and Euro-status conditions are met; it is not automatic and must not be transferred to lease-rental deductions. Check the vehicle documents and HMRC’s plug-in hybrid conditions with your accountant.

Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 24 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). Dolphin G is taxed as a hybrid, not a zero-emission car. First-year VED uses the applicable CO2 rules; the standard annual payment after that is £200 in 2026/27 before supplements. Ask how subsequent tax changes are passed through the agreement.

Expensive Car Supplement. The supplement threshold relevant to Dolphin G is an original list price over £40,000, including qualifying options. Where applicable, £440 annually in 2026/27 runs for five years from the second licence. Its plug-in technology does not give it the higher threshold for a zero-emission vehicle. Check GOV.UK vehicle-tax rules.

Planned eVED. The planned PHEV eVED starting rate is 1.5p per mile from April 2028 in addition to VED. It remains subject to legislation and implementation, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30. Check the contractual treatment rather than assuming only electrically driven miles will matter. Read the eVED proposal.

VAT and the business accounts

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.

The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.

Build the quotation around the way you will use it

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

BYD Dolphin G leasing questions

What is BYD Dolphin G in the UK?

BYD UK calls it Dolphin G DM-i: a plug-in hybrid hatchback. It is not the battery-electric Dolphin or Dolphin Surf. Use the full model and powertrain name on a quotation so that charging expectations, tax and equipment are assessed for the correct car.

Is Dolphin G already announced for UK ordering?

BYD’s UK press office stated that orders were open on 9 July 2026. That is manufacturer status, not confirmation of an IVF vehicle or delivery slot. Ask IVF to establish the offered derivative and actual supply position before relying on a timetable.

Which Dolphin G versions does IVF list?

The captured route contains Active, 212 Boost, 212 Comfort and 212 Sport, all described as automatic Petrol Parallel PHEV hatchbacks. The shortened catalogue names should be matched to the UK Dolphin G DM-i specification and the offered model year.

Why compare Active and Boost carefully?

BYD’s UK launch information gives them different battery and charging specifications. Decide how much charging access your recurring trips allow before moving to equipment choices. A higher maximum charging rating does not establish the charging time you will experience.

Is the Dolphin G suitable for a business pool car?

It can be assessed for that task where passenger needs, mileage and a dependable charging routine align. Confirm how keys and charging are managed between drivers. Pool-car tax treatment has conditions; the business label alone does not establish an exemption.

Can Dolphin G work as a private second car?

Consider it where regular local trips can use routine charging and occasional longer trips still matter. Test child seats, luggage and the journeys it must handle when the other household car is unavailable. Suitability depends on those requirements, not simply vehicle size.

Should I choose Dolphin G or electric Dolphin?

Choose the comparison around whether you want a plug-in hybrid or a fully electric car. Dolphin G retains petrol propulsion. The electric Dolphin needs a charging plan for all travel. Inspect each car’s own cabin and luggage layout rather than assuming they are identical.

How does Dolphin Surf differ from Dolphin G?

Dolphin Surf is a separate electric compact-car route. It should be compared on its own seating, load space and charging requirements. A similar name does not make it a trim of Dolphin G or give it the G’s plug-in hybrid operating arrangement.

What should a Dolphin G business tax comparison include?

Use the exact P11D, certified emissions and electric range, then consider every tax year in the agreement. Active and larger-battery versions should not automatically receive the same percentage. Have any emissions-test easement checked against the individual vehicle documents.

How do I request a Dolphin G lease proposal?

Tell IVF the full DM-i model name, acceptable trims, annual mileage, charging access and essential equipment. Specify business or personal contracting and the desired term. Ask for a written vehicle-status check and consistent contract assumptions before comparing proposals.
