Your BYD Dolphin leasing decision

Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps you explore BYD Dolphin leasing for business or personal use. The UK electric hatchback is distinct from Dolphin Surf and Dolphin G. Start with the Comfort or Design specification, your passenger needs and charging routine; IVF must confirm the offered vehicle, funding terms and availability.

BYD Dolphin UK leasing: a hatchback with a specific job

The Dolphin belongs on the shortlist when the daily brief is more about people, parking and predictable journeys than a large SUV body. For a business driver it can be a straightforward electric commuter that also handles local appointments. For a private household it can take the town-car role without asking you to choose a very small city model. The reason to select it should be the way it fits those jobs, rather than its position in a model-name hierarchy.

It deserves a different conversation if you regularly fill every seat and the boot together, carry awkward work equipment or depend on public charging between time-critical visits. Try that demanding day before settling on a specification. A familiar commute alone does not establish that the car covers the whole brief.

BYD Dolphin leasing: key facts

  • BYD UK identifies Dolphin as a battery-electric hatchback using its LFP Blade Battery; it is a separate model from Dolphin Surf.
  • The UK Dolphin reference lists a 345-litre boot, increasing to 1,310 litres with the rear seats folded. These are different seating configurations.
  • The rear backrests divide 60:40 in BYD’s UK description. Check the load opening with the items you actually carry.
  • IVF’s captured Dolphin list contains 150kW Comfort and 150kW Design, both labelled 60.4kWh. Those labels need matching to the supplied model year.
  • BYD’s UK specification overview quotes a 150 kW motor. Equipment and battery descriptions should be confirmed for the individual Comfort or Design proposal.
  • GOV.UK: zero-emission company-car BiK is 4% in 2026/27, rising to 9% in 2029/30.

These are choices of vehicle role, not a performance league table. Compare the quoted derivative and contract separately for each model.

Comfort and Design in the IVF Dolphin list

The live IVF route checked on 24 September 2026 shows two descriptions: 150kW Comfort 60.4kWh Auto and 150kW Design 60.4kWh 5dr Auto. Treat those as the starting shortlist. A catalogue entry is not confirmation that a particular car has been allocated or that every colour and option can be supplied. Ask for a written equipment schedule alongside the exact derivative name.

Compare Comfort and Design by the features you would use every week. Seat adjustment, visibility, roof specification and the operation of the main controls deserve a demonstration. Do not accept a photo of a higher specification as evidence of the car in your quotation. If an item is essential, name it in the request rather than assuming the trim badge settles it.

Dolphin, Dolphin Surf and Dolphin G are different enquiries

A search for Dolphin can bring up several BYD names. This page concerns the Dolphin electric hatchback captured in IVF’s Comfort and Design list. Dolphin Surf has its own vehicle route, and Dolphin G has a separate route too. Their equipment, propulsion and dimensions should not be inferred from this page. Give IVF the complete model name if you arrive with a saved advert or manufacturer configuration.

Within this shortlist, the Atto 3 Evo tests whether you actually want an SUV instead of a hatchback. Dolphin Surf tests whether the role is primarily town use. Changing body style can alter the loading and seating experience enough to matter more than moving between two Dolphin trims. Keep each proposal attached to its own specification.

Make the boot and back seats work together

The boot figure is useful only with its seating condition attached. Folding the rear backrests creates a different carrying arrangement from travelling with passengers. For a household, bring the pushchair, sports bag or regular shopping load to the assessment. For work, test the case that must remain secure and out of sight. A litre figure does not describe the shape of the opening or how easily the object can be lifted in.

Set the front seat for the actual driver before checking the rear. Then consider the less frequent passenger, not only the person who normally sits there. If a child seat is part of the brief, check fitting instructions, belt access and the space needed to use it properly with the doors open.

Choose a charging routine before choosing the Dolphin

The strongest starting point is a place where the car can charge while you are doing something else. Assess the home or workplace space, the cable route and who controls access. For a second household EV, include the other car in that plan: one charger can create a scheduling question even when each car’s individual mileage appears modest.

If public charging is central, identify usable sites near the actual destinations and an alternative for each critical stop. Ask for the supplied Dolphin’s AC and DC charging information rather than applying a figure from another BYD. Published test range is a comparison tool; weather, speed, load and heating affect the journey. Leave a usable reserve for diversions instead of planning to arrive with an empty battery.

A useful Dolphin demonstration is more than a short drive

Try the controls that interrupt a normal journey: finding the destination, changing temperature, pairing a phone and adjusting the driver-assistance settings. Check what works through physical controls and what needs the screen. A driver sharing the car with a partner or colleague should also test how easily settings and accounts can be changed without losing the first person’s preferences.

Use a route that resembles your work rather than only quiet streets around a showroom. Include the parking manoeuvre you find awkward and a faster-road section if that is part of the commute. This is a request to assess suitability, not a claim that IVF has road-tested the car or that any assistance system removes the driver’s responsibility.

What changes a Dolphin lease quotation?

The exact Comfort or Design car, annual mileage, agreement length, initial rental and maintenance selection shape the proposal. Tell IVF whether the contracting customer is a business or a private individual, and ask to see the VAT treatment clearly. A comparison between two quotations is useful only when the assumptions match; a different payment pattern can disguise a different total commitment.

For business use, separate the employer’s agreement cost from the driver’s company-car benefit. For a private second car, include insurance, charging arrangements and any period when the vehicle may be left unused. Do not assume lower annual mileage removes the need to check the return standard, early-termination terms or what happens if the household’s travel pattern changes.

BYD Dolphin company-car tax across the lease

For a Dolphin provided to an employee or director with private use, its zero-emission status sets the percentage category, while the individual car’s P11D supplies the value. Comfort and Design quotations should therefore include that value, even if both share the same tax band.

Multiply the relevant P11D by the annual percentage to establish the normal taxable benefit, then apply the driver’s income-tax circumstances. This is not a tax on lease payments. Sole traders need a separate assessment.

Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 24 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.

Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is currently £440 a year for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.

Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.

VAT and the business accounts

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.

Businesses using the VAT Flat Rate Scheme do not normally recover input VAT on recurring car hire. The separate capital-goods exception does not turn hire invoices into a vehicle purchase. Check HMRC’s Flat Rate Scheme guidance.

A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Build the quotation around the way you will use it

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

BYD Dolphin leasing questions

Can I lease a BYD Dolphin in the UK through IVF?

IVF has a UK Dolphin route listing Comfort and Design electric derivatives. Ask for a vehicle-specific proposal; the catalogue does not establish allocation, stock or a delivery date. Business and personal agreements remain subject to status and individual funder criteria.

Which BYD Dolphin versions does IVF list?

The captured list shows 150kW Comfort 60.4kWh Auto and 150kW Design 60.4kWh 5dr Auto. Confirm the model year and equipment behind the chosen description before comparing it with a manufacturer brochure or another quotation.

Is the Dolphin the same car as Dolphin Surf?

No. Dolphin Surf is a separate BYD model with its own IVF route. This page covers the Dolphin hatchback. Use the full name when enquiring so the vehicle dimensions, battery and specification are not mixed between the two cars.

Does this page also cover Dolphin G?

No. Dolphin G has a separate vehicle route. The Dolphin facts here must not be transferred to it. If that is the model you intended, tell IVF explicitly and request a specification for that separate car.

How should I compare Dolphin Comfort and Design?

Begin with a written list of essential features and compare the offered cars against it. Demonstrate seating, controls and visibility. The trim name alone does not confirm the model year, optional equipment or exact vehicle that a funder can offer.

Is the Dolphin suitable as a company car?

It is worth assessing for a driver whose passenger needs and charging routine fit an electric hatchback. Use the actual P11D value and each year’s zero-emission company-car percentage, while keeping the employer’s contract costs and VAT position separate.

Can the Dolphin cover occasional longer journeys?

Assess the precise derivative against your longer route and realistic charging stops. Allow for weather, motorway speed and passengers. A published range figure is not a promise that every itinerary can be completed without stopping.

How do I assess Dolphin luggage space?

Test the load with the seats you need still available. Check the hatch opening and the shape of the items as well as volume. Folded-seat capacity is not the relevant measure when the rear passengers travel with you.

What information does IVF need for a Dolphin lease price?

Provide Comfort or Design, essential equipment, business or personal use, term, mileage and preferred initial-rental structure. IVF can then compare suitable funder proposals on a consistent basis, with maintenance and applicable charges explained in writing.

Can I buy the Dolphin at the end of contract hire?

Contract hire ends with the car returned and does not include a contractual purchase option. Plan for the funder’s return requirements, including mileage, condition and the return of supplied equipment, when deciding whether the agreement suits you.
