Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps you compare BYD Sealion 7 business contract hire and personal leasing, including Excellence AWD. Comfort, Design and Excellence have different battery and drive configurations. Choose around charging access, passengers and equipment, then compare quotations using the same term, mileage, initial rental and maintenance assumptions.
The Sealion 7 is worth considering for a business driver who wants an electric SUV to cover both work and family use, and can support it with a dependable charging plan. Its appeal is the combination of passenger accommodation and distinct drivetrain choices. The business question is whether those choices improve your actual working week, not whether the largest battery or highest trim sounds more impressive.
Start by describing who travels, what they carry and the longest journey you repeat. Five usable passenger places are the relevant brief here; the number in the model name is not a seat count. If you regularly need an additional row, move that requirement to the front of the discussion. If home charging is unavailable, assess your public or workplace alternative before treating the car as an easy change from combustion.
| Model | Reason to consider it | Decision to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| BYD Sealion 7 | Five-seat battery-electric SUV | Match Comfort, Design or Excellence to charging and use |
| BYD Seal | Electric saloon alternative | Different loading and seating arrangement |
| BYD Seal U | Separate SUV and powertrain enquiry | Confirm whether a fully electric car is essential |
Compare named derivatives and equipment on the same contract assumptions. This table explains the different roles of these cars; it is not a performance ranking.
IVF lists 230 kW Comfort, 390 kW Design AWD and 390 kW Excellence AWD descriptions. BYD UK distinguishes Comfort’s rear-wheel drive from the all-wheel-drive arrangements in Design and Excellence. That means an Excellence enquiry is more than an equipment upgrade from Comfort. It changes the battery and drive configuration, so compare its insurance, energy use and contract terms as a complete vehicle.
The manufacturer’s named battery capacities are more precise than IVF’s rounded listing labels. Match the full version, not just a number in a search result. Comfort and Design share the smaller rated capacity but have different combined range benchmarks. Excellence pairs all-wheel drive with the larger battery. You should not combine Comfort’s drivetrain, Excellence’s capacity and another trim’s range into an imaginary specification.
The combined WLTP figures give a consistent test framework for distinguishing the three named UK references. They are not predictions of winter motorway distance, nor do they measure the time spent reaching a convenient charger. Use them to understand the version differences, then plan your own routes with sensible reserve for conditions, passengers and unexpected diversions.
For a working day involving several appointments, consider where charging would fit without disrupting the schedule. A stop near a client might work well if there is another option nearby; a single isolated charger creates a different risk. Check access hours, parking restrictions and payment arrangements. That practical exercise often matters more than a modest difference between laboratory range figures.
BYD publishes different DC capabilities for the battery configurations. Ask for the precise supplied-car specification and the conditions attached to its charging benchmark. A peak power rating is not sustained throughout a session, and a charger’s advertised output does not mean the car will draw it continuously. Arrival charge level, battery temperature and shared charger capacity all affect the session.
A business driver should also decide how charging will be authorised and recorded. Home, workplace and public sessions may involve different accounts and reimbursement arrangements. Bring those questions to the employer or accountant before committing to a routine. The vehicle choice, charging installation and electricity arrangement are related decisions, but accepting a car quotation does not by itself settle the other two.
Try the rear seats with the front seats in their normal positions, then load your regular luggage without moving passengers out of the way. The Sealion 7’s roof profile makes the shape of the load worth checking, especially for tall cases or equipment. A boot-volume headline cannot resolve how an awkward item passes through the opening or sits below the load cover.
Likewise, separate driver preferences from equipment you need every day. If a head-up display or a particular seat finish is the reason for Excellence, have it confirmed on the offered specification. Test visibility, screen operation and access to frequently used controls. These observations are personal to the driver, so a demonstration can add more value than another list of standard features.
The BYD Seal is the separate electric saloon comparison. It makes sense to view it if your enquiry is about electric BYD travel and you do not specifically require an SUV layout. Compare seating access and luggage loading with the Sealion 7 using the same real items. Similar naming does not make their body styles interchangeable.
Seal U is another separate route, relevant when you are examining a different SUV and powertrain proposition. State whether a battery-electric car is essential before accepting it as an alternative. The useful comparison is between ways of meeting your passenger and journey brief, with each model’s own evidence, rather than treating the Seal family names as trim levels of one car.
For an Excellence business-lease request, identify the business, expected private use, annual mileage and agreement duration. Tell IVF which equipment is essential and whether servicing and tyres should be included in the proposal. Its funder panel can then be considered on that basis, subject to status and each funder’s criteria. Personal leasing needs the individual’s own contract brief instead.
Keep the payment schedule, initial rental and included services together when assessing proposals. Add insurance and your likely charging pattern, then examine the road-tax provisions across the intended term. A zero-emission car still has costs beyond electricity and hire payments. The driver’s BiK calculation, the company’s VAT position and the funder’s contractual charges each answer a different question.
For a Sealion 7 made available privately to an employee or director, the zero-emission BiK path applies to the vehicle category. Choosing Excellence can still change the benefit through its P11D value.
Calculate the appropriate annual benefit using the supplied Sealion 7’s P11D and that tax year’s percentage. Apply the driver’s income-tax circumstances separately. The resulting personal liability is not the same measure as the company’s hire expenditure.
A business comparing Comfort with Excellence should show the driver the whole multi-year path. Equipment and options can change the list value even though both versions are electric. Sole traders using their own business car and individuals taking a personal lease require a different assessment.
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-emission electric car | 4% | 5% | 7% | 9% |
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 24 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.
Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is currently £440 a year for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.
Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
Businesses using the VAT Flat Rate Scheme do not normally recover input VAT on recurring car hire. The separate capital-goods exception does not turn hire invoices into a vehicle purchase. Check HMRC’s Flat Rate Scheme guidance.
A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
Use BYD range, BYD Seal, BYD Seal U, company-car BiK guide, request a callback to narrow your choice or discuss a quotation.
Yes. Give IVF your business requirements, annual mileage, agreement duration and intended private use. Proposals are subject to status and funder criteria. Company-car tax and business accounting should be assessed alongside the contract.
Excellence AWD has a different battery configuration from Comfort and Design in BYD’s UK specification. Identify the full derivative and required equipment so the quotation concerns the version you actually want.
No. BYD UK specifies five seats. If you need another row for regular passengers, say so before shortlisting; the model’s numerical name does not describe its seating capacity.
IVF’s captured Comfort and Design descriptions use rounded battery labels. Match the complete derivative to BYD’s rated-capacity specification. Do not interpret different rounding as proof of a separate battery version.
The UK combined WLTP benchmarks differ because the named configurations differ. Comfort is rear-wheel drive and Design is all-wheel drive. Match the exact car and allow for weather, speed and load in real journeys.
It is one factor. Consider whether its equipment and drivetrain meet a real need, then compare charging arrangements, insurance and the full lease terms. A larger battery does not remove the need to plan journeys.
No. The vehicle version, battery temperature, charge level and available charger output influence the result. Obtain the supplied car’s charging specification and check the infrastructure on your regular routes.
No. Seal is a separate electric saloon. Compare it when an SUV body is optional, using passenger access and luggage loading as practical tests rather than relying on the similar name.
IVF needs the derivative, term, mileage, initial-rental preference and maintenance requirements to compare proposals through its funder panel. Ask for the full schedule and applicable charges on the same assumptions.
Review the driver’s P11D-based benefit, business VAT treatment, charging arrangements and the funder’s road-tax provisions. Later tax years and any future mileage-charge implementation can affect a multi-year agreement.
