Your BYD Seal leasing decision

Intelligent Vehicle Finance arranges BYD Seal business and personal leasing around the electric saloon’s Design and Excellence AWD choices. Compare drivetrain, model year and charging practicality before judging a quotation. The Seal U, Seal 6 and Sealion 7 are separate models, so their specifications should not be applied to this car.

BYD Seal Excellence and business lease: decide what the second motor adds

The Seal deserves consideration when you want an electric saloon and are willing to choose on the basis of the actual car rather than a familiar premium badge. The central decision is straightforward: Design and Excellence AWD have different drivetrains and performance priorities. Our starting point would be whether the extra performance and all-wheel-drive specification of Excellence serve a preference you actively hold. If the main job is regular commuting and business travel, Design warrants a serious comparison before you move up the range.

The saloon format also deserves a practical check. A driver who regularly carries tall equipment, loads a dog crate or needs an SUV seating position should compare a different body rather than assume the Seal will accommodate the same routine. Sit in it, check rear access and try the items you carry. For business use, the electric tax category is only one part of the decision; a car that works well on paper must still fit your daily parking and charging arrangements.

BYD Seal leasing: key facts

  • BYD’s UK model-year 2026 release identifies rear-wheel-drive Design and two-motor, all-wheel-drive Excellence versions.
  • The MY26 UK battery reference is 82.5 kWh; IVF rounds its two catalogue descriptions to 83 kWh. Confirm the actual supplied model year.
  • MY26 UK WLTP benchmarks: 354 miles for Design and 323 miles for Excellence. Match the offered version, wheels and specification; actual distance changes with weather, speed and load.
  • The MY26 UK Excellence reference quotes 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds, compared with 5.9 seconds for Design.
  • BYD’s February 2026 UK release gives MY26 luggage capacities of 485 litres at the rear and 72 litres at the front. These updated figures must not be transferred to an earlier car.
  • GOV.UK: zero-emission company-car BiK is 4% in 2026/27, rising to 9% in 2029/30.

Two IVF descriptions, with an important model-year check

IVF’s captured page lists 230 kW Design 83 kWh and 390 kW Excellence AWD 83 kWh four-door saloons. Those rounded battery labels help identify the catalogue entries, but BYD’s model-year 2026 UK reference states 82.5 kWh. Do not infer a different battery simply from rounding, and do not infer the model year from the capacity alone. Ask IVF to confirm the supplied generation, specification and registration position in the written quotation.

The 2026 model-year change matters because BYD’s UK release describes increased storage at both ends of the car. A photograph or review of an earlier Seal cannot establish the luggage space of a later one, and the reverse is also true. If that additional space is a reason for choosing the car, make the model-year requirement explicit. The same applies to the equipment and software features you expect. A short catalogue title cannot carry every detail of a production change.

Range is a Design-versus-Excellence trade-off to test

BYD’s MY26 UK reference gives 354 miles WLTP for Design and 323 miles for Excellence. These figures are attached to the named versions, not to every Seal ever listed. Match the offered model year and equipment first. Actual distance will vary with weather, speed, load and charging habits. The difference is useful when comparing the two briefs, but neither result should be treated as the mileage you will always achieve before needing to stop.

For the Excellence enquiry, decide how much you value its drivetrain and acceleration relative to your own travel pattern. A higher-output version can be an enjoyable choice without being necessary for an ordinary commute. Include insurance, tyre arrangements and the expected charging pattern in the decision. Conversely, do not assume that selecting Design settles every practical question: its charging equipment, supplied cables and ability to fit your parking space still need checking.

Look at charging where the Seal spends time, rather than only at motorway services. A home or workplace installation can make replenishment part of the routine, subject to access and the property’s electrical assessment. If you rely on public charging, check the stops you would use, their access arrangements and a fallback location. A station’s peak power does not describe the whole charging session, so compare manufacturer charging conditions and your likely starting charge before judging convenience.

Keep Seal, Seal U, Seal 6 and Sealion 7 separate

The BYD Seal U, BYD Seal 6 and BYD Sealion 7 have their own IVF routes. A shared part of the name is not evidence of the same body, battery or powertrain. If you arrived looking for one of those models, use its route and specify it in your enquiry. This page concerns the battery-electric Seal saloon shown in the two captured listings.

The Sealion 7 is the natural within-brand comparison when an electric SUV is the real requirement. The Seal U route is useful when your original search was for that separate model rather than this saloon. Compare the exact proposed powertrain before drawing tax conclusions. Within the Seal itself, test access to both luggage areas and how cables are stored. The updated MY26 storage figures describe capacity, but the shape of a particular case or item can still determine whether it fits.

What a BYD Seal lease-price enquiry needs

Give IVF the Design or Excellence preference, model-year requirement, annual mileage and contract length. Add the initial-rental structure you want to assess and whether maintenance should be included in the comparison. IVF can then compare suitable funder proposals. If you are flexible between the two versions, ask for matched contract assumptions so that the drivetrain and equipment differences are visible rather than obscured by different mileage or payment profiles.

For a business customer, confirm the supplied car’s P11D and relevant options before calculating personal company-car tax. For either business or personal hire, read the warranty terms, servicing requirements and battery-cover conditions against the period and mileage of the agreement. Separate those manufacturer obligations from the maintenance product in the quotation. Ask what remains your responsibility if you change charging arrangements, increase mileage or need to end the agreement early.

BYD Seal company-car tax across the lease

Design and Excellence are battery-electric Seal choices, so the zero-emission BiK path applies to qualifying company-car use. Their individual P11D values still matter.

For an employee or director with private availability, apply each tax year’s percentage to the actual P11D, then assess personal income tax and relevant adjustments. The tax percentage does not apply directly to the monthly rental. A business contract hire quotation and a personal benefit calculation therefore answer different questions.

The rising path below should be included in a multi-year comparison, even if the first year appears attractive. Do not apply it to another BYD model merely because its name includes Seal. Establish that the vehicle is genuinely zero-emission, then let your accountant assess the personal and business positions separately.

Tax information checked 24 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). A newly registered electric Seal has a £10 first-year VED rate in 2026/27, then the current £200 standard annual payment. Do not treat electric propulsion as a continuing road-tax exemption. Later annual cash rates are not confirmed in this guide; ask how changes reach the contract.

Expensive Car Supplement. Check the Seal’s actual list price, including relevant options before discounts, against the qualifying electric threshold of more than £50,000 for cars registered from 1 April 2025. Where due, the supplement is £440 annually in 2026/27 for five years from the second licence. See GOV.UK vehicle-tax rules.

Planned eVED. Under the government eVED proposals, battery-electric cars would incur 3p per mile from April 2028 alongside VED, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30. This is a planned charge, subject to legislation and implementation. Ask how the funder would treat it during a Seal lease.

VAT and the business accounts

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.

A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.

Build the quotation around the way you will use it

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

BYD Seal leasing questions

Can I lease a BYD Seal Excellence through my business?

IVF can assess an Excellence AWD business contract hire enquiry using the exact model year, equipment, mileage and term. Confirm the supplied car’s P11D and funder criteria separately from the practical decision to choose all-wheel drive.

What is the difference between Seal Design and Excellence?

BYD’s MY26 UK reference describes Design with rear-wheel drive and Excellence with two motors and all-wheel drive. Their performance and WLTP range differ. Compare the supplied versions and equipment rather than treating Excellence as a cosmetic trim change.

Why does IVF say 83 kWh while BYD says 82.5 kWh?

The captured IVF entries use a rounded 83 kWh catalogue description, while BYD’s MY26 UK release states 82.5 kWh. Confirm the actual car and specification; that rounding difference alone does not establish a different battery.

What range does BYD quote for the Seal?

The MY26 UK benchmarks are 354 miles WLTP for Design and 323 miles for Excellence. Match the quoted model year, wheels and equipment. Real distance depends on weather, speed and load, so neither is a promise for every listing.

Has the Seal’s luggage space changed?

BYD’s February 2026 UK release gives the MY26 car 485 litres of rear storage and 72 litres at the front. Those updated capacities should not be assigned to an earlier car. Confirm the model year and try your usual luggage.

Is the Seal U a version of this electric saloon?

No. Seal U has its own IVF model route, as do Seal 6 and Sealion 7. Use the precise model name in your enquiry and check its powertrain. Similar names do not establish equivalent batteries, bodies or tax treatment.

Should I compare the Seal with Sealion 7?

Yes if the actual requirement may be an electric SUV rather than a saloon. Assess seating position, passenger access, loading and parking in each. Confirm both specifications before comparing contract terms and company-car costs.

How is a BYD Seal lease price worked out?

IVF compares suitable funder quotations using Design or Excellence, exact model year, equipment, agreement length, annual mileage, initial rental and maintenance preference. A useful comparison holds those contractual inputs constant.

Does a Seal automatically avoid the expensive-car charge?

No. Check the supplied car’s published list price, relevant options and registration against the zero-emission threshold. The electric powertrain does not by itself settle supplement liability, and the threshold is separate from the BiK calculation.

What should I establish before choosing Excellence?

Decide whether you want its drivetrain and performance, then check model year, insurance, tyres, charging and equipment. Compare Design using the same mileage and term so that your choice reflects a clear vehicle difference.
