Yes. If you ordered a Tesla direct, you do not need to cancel it to lease the car. Tesla lists Self-Arranged Lease as a payment method. Give your broker the reservation number (RN). If a funder accepts your application, it takes over the order, and Tesla says it will return your deposit within 10 working days of the transfer.

Key facts

  1. Tesla's UK support pages list four payment methods for an order: Cash, Self-Arranged Financing, Tesla Partner Financing and Self-Arranged Lease.
  2. Tesla says the payment method can be chosen when you order, or changed at any other point, in your Tesla Account.
  3. If you paid a deposit and then decide to lease, Tesla's guidance is to tell the leasing company about the existing order and give it the Reservation Number (RN). Tesla says this preserves the reservation and avoids the order being cancelled.
  4. Tesla says it returns the deposit within 10 working days after the order has been transferred to the leasing company.
  5. Tesla's Contract Hire support page says Tesla Financial Services does not offer business leases. Tesla also says contract hire is available through third-party leasing companies.
  6. The leasing company is the legal owner of a leased car. Tesla says the V5C registration document is sent to the leasing company once delivery is complete.
  7. Intelligent Vehicle Finance is a credit broker, not a lender. We place applications with a panel of funders and may receive a commission from the funder when an agreement completes.

Tesla's process is described as it appeared on Tesla's UK support pages on 7 October 2026. Tesla can change it, so check your Tesla Account before relying on any single step.

Three situations this guide covers

It is a question our account managers are asked by drivers and directors who have ordered direct. The answer is the same in each case, but the starting point differs.

You ordered direct and now want to lease

You placed the order yourself, perhaps planning to pay cash or use finance, and have decided a lease suits you or your company better.

Your company wants a business lease

Tesla Financial Services does not offer business leases, so a company that wants business contract hire arranges it through a leasing company. Tesla lists this as a Self-Arranged Lease.

An application through Tesla did not go ahead

You applied through one of Tesla's finance partners and it was not approved, or the terms did not suit. You want to know whether another funder will consider it.

Check first

This only works before delivery

The takeover applies to an order. Once a car has been paid for and handed over, there is no order left to transfer. If your delivery date is close, call us before you pay the balance.

How the takeover works, step by step

We arrange leases this way for customers who ordered direct. The mechanics are simple: from our side, the Reservation Number is the only thing we need to arrange the takeover with Tesla. The real work is the lease itself, which means the quote, the application and the agreement.

Who does what when a leasing company takes over a Tesla order. Tesla's steps are as described on its UK support pages on 7 October 2026.
StepWhoWhat happens
1YouKeep the Tesla order live. Do not cancel it. Note the Reservation Number (RN) and Tesla's estimated delivery date.
2YouTell us the RN and the exact build: model, version, paint, wheels, interior and options. Tell us the term, annual mileage and initial rental you have in mind.
3Intelligent Vehicle FinanceWe quote on that exact car in writing, showing the rental, initial rental, term, mileage and any fees. An enquiry is not an application and does not involve a credit search.
4You and the funderIf you want to go ahead, you complete a finance application. The funder makes its own decision and may ask for supporting documents.
5The funder and TeslaIf the funder accepts and you sign the agreement, the RN goes to the funder, which arranges the takeover with Tesla. Tesla checks the details with the leasing company and transfers the order to it.
6TeslaTesla returns your deposit. Its support page says you receive it within 10 working days after the transfer.
7Tesla and youTesla confirms the delivery date by text message once the leasing company has confirmed it can take delivery. Bring your driving licence as identification and accept delivery in the Tesla app.
8DVLA and the funderThe V5C goes to the leasing company as legal owner. Your lease runs from delivery on the terms you signed.

Good to know

Your deposit comes back from Tesla

Tesla says it returns the deposit you paid on the order after the transfer. The initial rental on the lease is a separate payment to the funder, set out in your agreement.

What the funder may ask for

A lease on a Tesla is assessed like any other lease. Taking over an existing order does not change the checks. For a business, a funder may ask for some of the following.

  • The company name and number, and details of the directors.
  • Recent business bank statements, often the last three months.
  • The latest filed accounts, or draft or management accounts if none have been filed yet.
  • Sometimes a director's guarantee. This is a personal legal commitment, so take independent legal advice before signing one.

For a personal lease the funder assesses you, not a company: your identity, address history, income and outgoings.

Not every funder asks for everything, and we tell you what applies before you gather anything. Our guide to the documents needed for a business lease has the detail, and new business car leasing explains what funders look at when a company has no filed accounts yet.

If a finance application has already been declined

Tesla's support page says it is possible not to receive a credit approval on a first application, and that a Tesla representative will advise on next steps. If you would rather explore a lease through a broker, three points matter.

  • A decline is one funder's decision on one application. Another funder uses its own criteria, so its answer can differ. It can also be the same. Nobody can promise an approval, and we never will.
  • Find out why, if you can. If the reason was the company's age or a lack of filed accounts, a funder that regularly considers newer companies may ask for different evidence. If the reason was affordability or your credit history, a second application is unlikely to change the answer.
  • Tell us who declined it and when. That stops the application being sent back to the same funder, and it avoids a further credit search that serves no purpose.

Applications leave a record. Several in a short period can make the next one harder, so the aim is one well-prepared application to a funder whose criteria fit. An enquiry with us is not an application and does not involve a credit search. Nothing goes to a funder until you decide to proceed.

Protect your delivery slot

Tesla's delivery date is an estimate. Tesla says it depends on vehicle availability and on your order being ready with the leasing company. Four habits keep the date safe.

  • Start as soon as you know you want to lease. The application, the agreement and the transfer all need to be finished before Tesla books delivery with the leasing company.
  • Tell us Tesla's current delivery estimate when you enquire, and tell us if it moves.
  • Avoid late changes to the specification. Tesla says changes are requested through the leasing company, which requotes, and that a change may affect the delivery date.
  • Keep your mobile number up to date. After the transfer the leasing company is your main contact for the order, but Tesla still sends delivery updates by text message.

Business lease or personal lease?

The routes to a new Tesla, as Tesla's UK support pages described them on 7 October 2026, and who each one suits.
RouteWho it suitsWhat to know
Self-Arranged Lease: business contract hire through a leasing companyLimited companies, partnerships and sole tradersThe business is the hirer and the funder assesses the business. This is the route for a company that wants contract hire, because Tesla Financial Services does not offer business leases. See business contract hire.
Self-Arranged Lease: personal contract hire through a leasing companyPrivate driversYou are the hirer and the funder assesses you personally. Company car tax does not apply, because it is not a company car. See personal contract hire.
Contract hire from Tesla Financial ServicesPrivate drivers onlyTesla's support page says commercial use is not allowed and that a private lease cannot be changed to a business lease.
Tesla Partner FinancingCustomers who want Tesla to arrange financeTesla's pages describe Hire Purchase and Contract Purchase arranged with partner lenders. These are finance routes towards ownership, not contract hire, and this guide does not cover them.

On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to read every column.

For a company, an electric car provided to a director or employee with private use is a company car for tax. The benefit-in-kind percentage for zero-emission cars rises in steps over the coming tax years, so look at every year of the agreement and not only the first. Our company car BIK guide has the rates, and company car leasing for directors explains how a limited company takes the lease.

VAT on the rentals follows HMRC's rules for leased cars, including the 50% restriction where the car is available for private use. Our guide to VAT on business car leasing walks through an invoice. Intelligent Vehicle Finance does not give tax advice, so confirm your own position with your accountant.

Costs to check before you sign

A lease is a fixed commitment for the whole term, so read the written quotation line by line. These are the items that change the total cost.

  • Initial rental: how many rentals are paid at the start, and when.
  • Term and annual mileage: the rental is built on both. Mileage above the agreed total is charged at a rate set in the agreement. See excess mileage on a lease.
  • Maintenance: check whether servicing and tyres are included. If they are not, they are yours to arrange and pay for.
  • Vehicle tax: electric cars pay Vehicle Excise Duty, and a car with a list price over the Expensive Car Supplement threshold pays the supplement as well. Ask how the quotation treats vehicle tax across the term and what happens if the rates change.
  • eVED: a charge per mile for electric cars is proposed from 1 April 2028 and is not in force. If your term runs past that date, keep it separate from the confirmed costs. See electric company car running costs.
  • Insurance: you arrange cover for the car from the day of delivery. See insuring a leased car.
  • Returning the car: it goes back to the funder at the end and is assessed for condition. See end of lease return and fair wear and tear.
  • Leaving early: contract hire is not designed to be ended early, and doing so has a cost. See ending a lease early.
  • Fees and commission: the written quotation shows any fees before you apply. We may receive a commission from the funder when an agreement completes.

What to have ready when you call

  • The Tesla Reservation Number (RN).
  • The exact build: model, version, paint, wheels, interior and options.
  • Tesla's current delivery estimate.
  • Who the lease is for: the company name and number, or you personally.
  • The term, annual mileage and initial rental you have in mind.
  • Whether a finance application has already been made for this car, with whom, and the outcome.

You do not send documents through this website. Once we know which funder suits, we explain how to supply what is needed securely.

Your questions answered

The order

Can a leasing company take over a Tesla order I have already placed?

Yes. Tesla's UK support pages say that if you paid a deposit and then decide to lease, you tell the leasing company about the existing order and give it the Reservation Number. Tesla then checks the details with the leasing company and transfers the order to it. The lease itself depends on a funder accepting your application.

Do I have to cancel my Tesla order to lease the car instead?

No. Keep the order. Tesla says that giving the leasing company your Reservation Number preserves the reservation and avoids the order being cancelled. Cancelling and starting again would mean a new order and a new delivery estimate.

What is the Tesla reservation number (RN)?

It is the reference Tesla gives your order when you place it. Tesla calls it the Reservation Number, or RN. It identifies your order, so it is what the leasing company gives Tesla to take the order over. From our side it is the only thing we need to arrange the takeover. The rest of the work is the lease application.

Will Tesla refund my order deposit?

Tesla's UK support page says it returns the deposit once the order has been transferred to the leasing company, and that you receive it within 10 working days after the transfer. The refund comes from Tesla, not from the leasing company or from us. This is Tesla's stated process as read on 7 October 2026, so check your Tesla Account for the current wording.

Eligibility and decisions

Does Tesla offer a business lease itself?

Tesla's Contract Hire support page says Tesla Financial Services does not offer business leases and that commercial use of its leased vehicles is not allowed. Tesla also says contract hire is available through third-party leasing companies. A business that wants contract hire on a Tesla therefore arranges it through a leasing company, which Tesla lists as a Self-Arranged Lease.

Tesla's finance partner declined my application. Can another funder look at it?

Yes, another funder can consider an application, and it will make its own decision using its own criteria. That decision may be the same. Tell us which funder declined and why, if you know, so the application is not sent back to it. We do not promise approvals. An enquiry with us is not an application and does not involve a credit search.

My company is new. Can it apply for a business lease on a Tesla?

It can apply. Without filed accounts a funder looks at other evidence, such as recent business bank statements, the directors' own financial standing and whether the car suits the business. A director's guarantee is commonly discussed for newer companies. Some funders do not consider very new companies and others do, so the first step is a conversation about your circumstances.

Can I move a personal Tesla order to a lease?

Yes. The same Reservation Number process applies to a lease arranged through a leasing company, whether the lease is personal or in a company's name. If the order was placed in your own name and the lease will be in your company's name, tell us at the start so the leasing company can confirm the details Tesla needs for the transfer.

Delivery and ownership

Will moving the order to a leasing company change my delivery date?

Tesla describes its delivery date as an estimate that depends on vehicle availability and on your order being ready with the leasing company. The transfer does not come with a new delivery date of its own, but an unfinished application or an unsigned agreement can hold things up. Start early and avoid late changes to the specification, which Tesla says may affect the delivery date.

Who owns the car, and who receives the V5C?

The leasing company owns a leased car. Tesla's support page says the V5C registration document is sent to the leasing company by the DVLA once delivery is complete. You are the hirer and the driver: you insure the car, look after it and return it at the end of the agreement.

Sources and scope

Tesla's process is taken from three pages of Tesla's UK support site as read on 7 October 2026: Company Car Drivers, Finance Application Process and Contract Hire. Tesla can change its process at any time, and your Tesla Account is the authority on your own order.

The steps on our side describe how Intelligent Vehicle Finance handles these enquiries. This guide contains no prices or rates, and nothing in it is tax or legal advice.
