Your Tesla Model Y leasing decision

Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps business and personal customers choose a Tesla Model Y around passengers, luggage and charging access. The useful starting point is the exact model version and seating layout, then the contract. We explain those differences and compare suitable options through our panel of funders.

Start with the people and luggage you actually carry

The Model Y makes particular sense when your car has to combine weekday commuting with family loading. A large rear opening and separate front storage give you ways to divide bags, charging equipment and everyday items. But a headline luggage total is a poor substitute for trying your own pushchair, dog crate or sports kit. Manufacturers also measure storage differently, so litre figures should not be treated as a direct score against every rival.

If you are deciding between a Tesla Model 3 and the Model Y, start with how you load the car and use the rear seats. If the extra height and opening do not solve a regular problem, a saloon remains a sensible comparison. Test seat access, rear visibility and the controls yourself before settling on the body style.

Tesla Model Y leasing: key facts

  • Body: battery-electric SUV; confirm the seating configuration on the proposed vehicle.
  • Five-seat Premium benchmark: 4,790 mm long in Tesla's UK owner's manual.
  • Five-seat Premium benchmark: 2,129 mm wide with mirrors open.
  • Five-seat Premium benchmark: 1,624 mm high, subject to configuration.
  • Five-seat Premium benchmark: 2,890 mm wheelbase.
  • Five-seat Premium benchmark: 116 litres of front luggage space; this is separate from rear storage.
  • GOV.UK: zero-emission company-car BiK is 4% in 2026/27, rising to 9% in 2029/30.

The badge alone does not identify the car

Model Y specifications have changed, and the same broad model name can cover different body updates, motors, equipment and seating layouts. The catalogue includes a seven-seat-labelled derivative as well as other versions. Treat that label as a point to confirm on the vehicle order, rather than assuming every all-wheel-drive Model Y has a third row.

The dimensional facts here are a five-seat Premium reference from Tesla's current UK owner's manual. They are not specifications for every Model Y shown in the listings. Ask us to confirm the build version, seating, wheel size and installed equipment in writing. If you need a third row regularly, try the access, passenger space and luggage room with all required seats occupied.

Plan the charging routine before comparing power

A regular place to charge changes the ownership routine more than a performance badge. For your usual week, identify where the car would charge, the time available and the tariff. For longer journeys, look at stops on routes you really drive and leave a practical margin for cold weather, motorway speeds and a loaded car.

We will match any quoted range or charging specification to the proposed vehicle, including the battery, wheels and model version. Current manufacturer headline figures should not be applied to an older or differently equipped catalogue entry. Our electric-car leasing hub explains the wider decision if you are still comparing electric cars.

Ask for a Model Y quote you can compare properly

Tell us whether the agreement is for your business or you personally, your expected annual mileage, preferred term and seating requirement. Add the equipment you would miss if it were absent, and whether you have charging at home or work. This gives your adviser a useful brief rather than a trim name alone.

Compare the initial rental, ongoing rental, contract length, mileage allowance, maintenance option and any fees on the same basis. Ask for the exact derivative and equipment list alongside the quotation. You can browse the Tesla range or request a callback to discuss the shortlist.

Model Y versions in the current IVF listings

The current capture includes RWD Textile + Vegan Leather, Premium Long Range RWD, Premium Long Range AWD, a Premium AWD entry marked 7 Seat, non-Premium Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD with an 85kWh label and Performance AWD. Those labels should prompt a version check, not a decision based solely on their order in the list.

Ask for the production version and essential equipment before comparing two quotations. Premium, seating and wheel choices can affect the car you receive. A catalogue battery label is not a certified usable-capacity figure, and an older Long Range entry must not inherit current range or charging claims automatically.

Try a complete family-loading routine

Arrive for a viewing with the items that decide whether the car works: pushchair, child seats, sports bags or the dog crate. Try loading with the rear seats in their normal position. Front storage is useful for separating items, but it cannot compensate for something that does not fit through the rear opening.

Tesla’s manual distinguishes Model Y, five-seat Premium and Performance measurements. Its Premium reference includes 116 litres of front storage, separate from the rear compartment. Do not transfer that volume or the dimensional figures to the seven-seat-labelled listing. Check the exact body and seating configuration, and leave practical room for charging-cable access in your parking space.

Set up a Model Y used by more than one driver

For a household or a small business sharing the car, agree who manages access, charging and vehicle settings. Try the driving position for each regular user and make sure essential functions are understood before handover. Software features and subscriptions should be confirmed against the ordered build.

Keep work mileage and charging records in a form the business can use. A shared car still needs an agreed return condition and a clear responsibility for tyres, repairs and missing equipment. These arrangements are easier to settle before the first journey than at the end of the contract.

Tesla Model Y company-car tax across the lease

For a company-provided Model Y with private use, the electric-car BiK percentage is only part of the calculation. A higher P11D value can still produce a higher tax bill than another EV in the same band. Compare the full contract period using the company-car BiK guide.

For an employee or director with private use, the taxable benefit normally starts with the car’s P11D value multiplied by the applicable BiK percentage. Personal tax then depends on the individual’s income tax rate and any relevant adjustments. The percentage is not the tax rate applied to the lease rental. A sole trader’s own business car use follows different rules.

The agreement can cross several tax years. Compare the whole path, not just the percentage in the year the car arrives.

Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked against GOV.UK on 24 September 2026. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.

Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is £440 a year in 2026/27 for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.

Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.

VAT and the business accounts

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.

A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.

Build the quotation around the way you will use it

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

Already ordered your Tesla Model Y?

If you ordered direct from Tesla and now want to lease, you do not need to cancel the order. A leasing company can take it over using the reservation number, if a funder accepts your application. Our guide to the Tesla self-arranged lease explains each step.

Tesla Model Y leasing questions

Is every Tesla Model Y a seven-seater?

No. Seating depends on the exact version and configuration. A seven-seat label appears in the IVF catalogue, but it must be confirmed on the vehicle order. The physical reference figures on this page describe the five-seat Premium version, not every Model Y.

What is the main reason to choose a Model Y over a Model 3?

Consider the Model Y if the SUV body and rear loading opening solve a regular family or luggage requirement. Compare both with your passengers and the items you actually carry, rather than choosing solely from a storage-volume figure.

Do all Model Y versions have the same range?

No. Battery, motor configuration, wheels, model version and conditions affect range. Ask for the official figure for the exact proposed vehicle, and allow a practical margin for your motorway journeys and winter driving.

Can I lease a Model Y without home charging?

It may suit you if reliable workplace or public charging fits your routine. Check charger locations, access times and costs before committing. Your annual mileage alone does not establish whether public charging will be convenient.

What should I check when comparing Model Y quotations?

Match the derivative, seating, wheels, equipment, initial rental, agreement length, mileage allowance, maintenance and fees. Similar model names do not prove that two quotations describe the same vehicle.

Can IVF arrange a Model Y for business or personal use?

IVF arranges business and personal contract hire, subject to status and funder criteria. Tell us who will enter the agreement and how the car will be used so that the quotation is prepared on the correct basis.

How is a company-provided electric Model Y taxed?

Private use of an employer-provided car can create a Benefit-in-Kind charge. The applicable electric-car percentage is applied to its P11D value, then your income-tax rate determines your personal liability. Review every tax year within the proposed term with your accountant.

Does a Model Y lease include maintenance and insurance?

Check the written agreement. Maintenance may be an additional package and should state what it covers. Arrange appropriate insurance unless expressly included, and confirm responsibility for tyres, servicing and damage.

Does the warranty last for the whole lease?

Do not assume that it does. Manufacturer warranty protection has its own time, mileage and component limits from the applicable start date. Compare these with the proposed term and annual mileage, including the separate battery terms.

What happens when the Model Y contract ends?

For contract hire you normally return the car. Excess mileage, damage outside the agreement's fair-wear standards and missing items may incur charges. Ask about return requirements and early-termination costs before entering the agreement.
