Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps you compare Kia Sorento business and personal leasing for seven-seat journeys. The UK range includes hybrid, plug-in hybrid and diesel choices, with different charging and towing implications. Start with passenger and luggage needs, then confirm the exact derivative, model year and company-car tax position.
The Sorento deserves a place on the shortlist when the additional row is part of normal family life or passenger travel. It gives a business driver a vehicle that can also carry a larger household, but seven seatbelts alone do not settle the choice. The meaningful test is whether the people, luggage and any trailer can travel together in the configuration you need.
IVF's recommendation is to test the third row before choosing the powertrain or trim. If you rarely need it, a smaller vehicle may be easier to park and organise. If you want an entirely electric seven-seat Kia, EV9 is the separate enquiry. Sorento suits a different brief: retaining an engine, then deciding between hybrid, plug-in hybrid and diesel according to charging access and journey demands.
| Model | Buyer task | Decision to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Sorento | Seven-seat SUV with engine choices | Match towing and charging to the exact powertrain |
| Santa Fe | Alternative hybrid or plug-in family SUV | Inspect six/seven-seat layout and cabin access |
| EV9 | Electric Kia passenger SUV | Confirm seating and dependable charging |
Compare the exact seating layout and powertrain being quoted. A live model route is a research starting point, not confirmation of an available vehicle.
A Sorento hybrid does not need an external charging connection. It can suit a household or business driver who wants an electrified powertrain without adding a plugging-in routine. The plug-in version needs a more deliberate plan: regular access to charging, a place for the cable and clarity about who pays when the car is used for work and private journeys. Neither should be described as an entirely electric vehicle.
Kia's current UK technical table gives the PHEV a 13.8 kWh battery. Battery capacity alone does not establish the electric distance your car will cover. Request the certified range for the actual model year, wheels and derivative, and allow for weather and load when assessing daily use. For an employee car, compare those practical conditions with the multi-year tax position instead of choosing the plug-in only for a first-year percentage.
The current UK table makes an important distinction: maximum braked trailer weights are 2,000 kg for hybrid, 1,700 kg for plug-in hybrid and 2,500 kg for diesel. These are references for the versions in that table. They are not a promise that an older catalogue entry, an unequipped car or every fully occupied Sorento can tow the same load.
If a caravan or other leisure trailer is part of the plan, provide its actual laden weight and nose weight. Ask for the precise car's towing, train-weight and towbar limits, then check passenger and luggage loading within the vehicle's permitted weights. A large SUV can still be the wrong towing choice when the wrong engine or equipment is selected. Diesel remains in the captured Sorento catalogue, so the hybrid discussion should not erase that option before the task is understood.
The September capture contains eighteen distinct derivatives. It combines 1.6 T-GDi HEV, 1.6 T-GDi PHEV and 2.2 CRDi descriptions with Pure, Evolve and Aspire grades, and also earlier 2, 3 and 4 names. The HEV and PHEV entries say Auto; the diesel entries say DCT. This mixture is a reason to establish model year, not a reason to merge all equipment into one specification.
Kia's current UK table uses Pure, Evolve and Aspire. Its linked August 2025 digital PDF still contains provisional entries and inconsistent output data. Use the current UK table for the scoped references here, and confirm an older car against its own specification. Identify the exact seats, cameras, climate controls and driver assistance on the proposed vehicle. A grade with a different name may not be equivalent even if the exterior photograph looks familiar.
Set the driver's seat for the person who will drive, then arrange the second row and try the third. Check access while any child seats remain installed, whether passengers can reach belts and ventilation, and where bags will fit with every required seat upright. A luggage figure measured with seats folded would answer a different question from carrying a full household to the airport.
Do the parking exercise with the same care. Check the width of your usual bay, how the doors open beside another car and whether the tailgate can operate beneath your garage roof. Cameras and sensors can help, but their presence needs confirming for the exact grade and they do not enlarge a parking space. For a shared business vehicle, leave a clear record of the normal seat arrangement and equipment carried.
Santa Fe is the natural neighbouring hybrid and plug-in SUV comparison, but its seating options and cabin layout need a separate inspection. Do not assume that related powertrain descriptions produce identical towing limits or passenger arrangements. EV9 is the electric alternative and therefore brings a different charging and journey-planning decision rather than simply adding another trim to the Sorento range.
Send IVF a Sorento brief that includes the number and ages of regular passengers, frequency of third-row use, annual mileage, charging access and any towing requirement. If one condition is decisive, say so before comparing agreement figures. A business quotation should also identify the employee's proposed car specification clearly enough for the accountant to assess it; a generic Sorento tax example cannot replace that evidence.
Sorento hybrid, diesel and plug-in entries need separate company-car calculations. The PHEV only belongs in a lower band when its certification and any applicable easement support that treatment. Use the exact model-year evidence; a numbered grade should not inherit the tax specification of a newer named grade.
Where company-car rules apply, private availability normally creates a benefit based on P11D value and the appropriate percentage. The employee’s income-tax rate then determines personal tax, subject to adjustments. Sole traders follow different rules. Compare every tax year crossed by the agreement.
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible 1-50 g/km PHEV; 30-39 certified electric miles | 14% | 15% | 18% | 19% |
| Upper band, only where the exact car qualifies | 37% | 37% | 38% | 39% |
Conditional examples, not assigned rates for every Kia Sorento. Confirm P11D, CO2, fuel and registration. A diesel supplement can apply without the required emissions certification, within the annual maximum.
Electric-mile thresholds are tax tests, not driving-range promises. An eligible newer PHEV above 50 g/km may receive a temporary deemed-1-g/km BiK easement, subject to registration, electric-range and Euro-status conditions. It does not determine rental deductions. Check HMRC’s plug-in hybrid conditions with your accountant.
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Checked 24 September 2026 against C1 and primary sources. Tax depends on circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). Under the ordinary post-April-2017 car regime, standard annual VED is £200 in 2026/27 after year one, before any supplement. First-year liability depends on certified CO2 and registration. Later annual cash rates are not confirmed here; check how your funder handles changes.
Expensive Car Supplement. The 2026/27 supplement is £440 annually for five years from the second licence, above a £40,000 list-price threshold for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars. Include relevant options and check registration rules. The £50,000 threshold is for qualifying zero-emission cars, not these plug-ins. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.
Planned eVED. The government proposes eVED alongside VED from April 2028: starting rates of 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p for PHEVs. It is not in force and remains subject to legislation and implementation. CPI uprating is proposed from 2029/30; later cash rates are unconfirmed. Ask how a spanning agreement would handle the charge. Check the government’s consultation response and final guidance.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
Businesses using the VAT Flat Rate Scheme do not normally recover input VAT on recurring car hire. The separate capital-goods exception does not turn hire invoices into a vehicle purchase. Check HMRC’s Flat Rate Scheme guidance.
The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
Use Kia leasing range, compare the Hyundai Santa Fe, compare the Kia EV9, company-car tax guide, request a callback to narrow your choice or discuss a quotation.
IVF can discuss both contract-hire routes subject to status, funder criteria and confirmation of a suitable vehicle. Start with seven-seat use, luggage, mileage and towing needs. The business decision also requires the precise car’s P11D and emissions details, not a general Sorento tax figure.
No. The captured IVF range includes 1.6 hybrid, 1.6 plug-in hybrid and 2.2 diesel descriptions. Only the plug-in requires external charging for its intended electric use. Confirm the exact powertrain before comparing running costs, towing capability or company-car tax.
Kia’s UK specification lists seven seats with three in the second row. Check the actual quoted vehicle, third-row access and luggage space with those seats occupied. A folded-seat load demonstration does not show how the car will work with seven people travelling.
Kia’s current UK references are 2,000 kg braked for hybrid, 1,700 kg for plug-in and 2,500 kg for diesel. Exact vehicle, train-weight, towbar and loading limits still control. Supply your actual trailer weights before choosing an engine or accepting a quotation.
The capture contains earlier 2, 3 and 4 labels alongside Pure, Evolve and Aspire. Treat them as potentially different model-year specifications. Do not assume a camera, seating feature or assistance system is shared across grades simply because both vehicles are called Sorento.
Ask for the certified figure for the exact supplied derivative, model year and wheels. The current battery specification is not a driving-range promise. Weather, speed, load and charging habits affect real use, and older catalogue cars must not automatically receive current manufacturer figures.
The non-plug-in hybrid does not require external charging, so it answers that requirement differently from the PHEV. Compare it against your normal trips and complete agreement costs. If selecting a PHEV, establish a dependable charging arrangement before assuming regular electric journeys.
Sorento retains an engine through its hybrid, plug-in or diesel choices. EV9 is the separate electric SUV route. Compare passenger space and actual seating first, then assess the charging plan and longer journeys; the two names should not be treated as interchangeable powertrain options.
Compare the actual seat layout, access to the rear row, luggage with passengers aboard, towing limits and charging requirements. Do not rely on exterior size or similar engine wording. Equipment and tax calculations need to be tied to each specific vehicle in the comparison.
Provide annual mileage, contracting party, preferred timing, passengers, luggage, essential equipment and any trailer details. State whether reliable charging is available. Ask for the confirmed derivative and model year in writing, with maintenance, return conditions and tax provisions clearly identified.
Bring your passenger, journey and equipment requirements. We can help turn them into a clear vehicle and contract brief.
