Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps you compare Land Rover Discovery business leasing and personal contract hire for seven-seat family and working use. The captured range is D350 diesel mild hybrid. Start with passengers, luggage and any towing requirement, then confirm trim and contract terms. Discovery Sport and Defender remain separate choices.
Discovery makes most sense when the passengers and equipment that accompany a normal journey genuinely justify a substantial seven-seat SUV. That might mean family use around a demanding working week, repeated travel with several adults or a towing requirement that needs careful vehicle selection. The important question is whether those jobs occur together, because each uses space or weight capacity that cannot be counted twice.
Our approach is to describe the hardest regular journey first. List the people, child seats, bags, equipment and trailer if relevant, then assess the car in that configuration. A demonstration with folded rear seats tells you little about a trip with every place occupied. Discovery is a less convincing fit where its size and capability are mostly unused while parking access is a daily constraint.
| Model | Reason to shortlist | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Discovery | Seven-seat passenger SUV with a D350 and towing brief | Check the combined passenger, luggage and trailer load |
| Land Rover Defender | Alternative where a different body or capability requirement leads | Its configurations need their own seating and technical checks |
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | Separate SUV model for a different size and use requirement | Do not transfer Discovery powertrain or towing figures |
These are practical comparisons of model roles, not equivalent specifications or a ranking. Confirm the exact UK derivative before comparing costs or equipment.
Every captured Discovery description uses the 3.0 D350 diesel powertrain. The table includes S, Dynamic SE, Dynamic HSE, Metropolitan Edition, Landmark, Gemini, Tempest and 35th Edition wording, plus an S entry marked Revised. These labels should identify the vehicle enquiry. They do not show that each edition is currently available or that equipment from one model year applies to another.
Land Rover’s current UK presentation identifies D350 as a diesel mild hybrid. It does not require the plug-in charging routine of a PHEV and it is not a battery-electric Discovery. The mild-hybrid label should therefore not be used to borrow the electric-car tax band. If another engine is requested, its specification and supply need a separate check rather than an assumption based on an older model range.
Edition names can be useful shorthand for styling or equipment, but the full build specification matters more. Ask how the quoted Gemini, Tempest or other edition differs in seats, assistance, towing equipment, wheels and connected services. The Revised label is especially worth clarifying before comparing it with another S description. Confirm model year and registration status instead of treating similar words as identical vehicles.
Load the luggage after positioning the passengers. Where a pushchair, mobility aid, sports bag or work case is non-negotiable, check the opening and the floor space with that object. The practical question is not how much cargo fits with most seats folded, but whether the normal combination fits safely. Keep access to essential items in mind, especially when luggage is loaded high or packed tightly.
The up-to-3,500 kg manufacturer benchmark is a useful reason to investigate Discovery, but it is not approval for a particular trailer combination. Obtain the permitted towing weight, gross vehicle weight, gross train weight and nose-weight limit for the exact car. The trailer’s actual loaded weight matters, as do passengers and equipment in the Discovery. Maximum values in separate headings should not be assumed simultaneously achievable.
Confirm the required towing equipment and any assistance functions on the written vehicle specification. Ask whether accessories affect payload or other limits, and check the intended use with the funder and insurer. The same care is needed for a caravan, horsebox or work trailer: the vehicle’s headline capability does not establish your licence entitlement, loading arrangement or contractual permission.
Discovery Sport is a separate model, not a shorter name for Discovery. Its passenger, powertrain and carrying specifications require their own assessment. If your need is primarily everyday SUV access with occasional extra flexibility, compare it independently rather than transferring the Discovery’s D350 or towing figures. The names alone cannot settle how well either vehicle handles your regular load.
Defender is another distinct family with different bodies and seating decisions. It may belong on the shortlist when the type of access, terrain or configuration matters, but its appearance should not be treated as proof that it is the more suitable tool. Use the Defender guide for that separate brief and the Discovery Sport guide for the smaller-model comparison.
Before committing to Discovery, assess the route into the parking space, room to open doors and the height available for the tailgate or fitted accessories. A vehicle can fit within painted lines yet be awkward for passengers to enter. Check camera and parking features on the exact edition, then try the manoeuvre where possible. Technology supports the driver; it does not make a restricted entrance wider.
For a company car, get the certified emissions and P11D early. Discovery’s diesel mild-hybrid description does not eliminate the benefit charge, and higher specification can increase the value used in the calculation. If passenger needs point firmly to Discovery, the next step is to understand that complete cost and contract position. The decision should remain clear even after the attractive edition name is removed from the page.
The D350 passenger Discovery is assessed under car company-benefit rules. Its diesel mild-hybrid powertrain is not a basis for applying a plug-in or zero-emission percentage.
The UK manufacturer’s from-213 g/km reference indicates a high-emissions comparison, but the supplied certificate remains the authority. Where the actual car reaches the maximum band, use the annual path below rather than assuming the percentage remains fixed for the agreement.
For a director or employee with private use, P11D multiplied by the appropriate percentage normally produces the taxable benefit, with personal income tax applied afterwards. A sole trader’s own business vehicle is treated differently. Compare benefit, rental deduction and road-tax provisions as separate costs.
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery only where certified emissions reach the annual maximum | 37% | 37% | 38% | 39% |
These are conditional tax bands, not assigned rates for every Land Rover Discovery. Confirm the supplied car’s P11D, certified CO2, fuel type and registration date. Diesel supplements can apply where the required emissions certification is absent, subject to the annual maximum.
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 23 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.
Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is currently £440 a year for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.
Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing. The Land Rover Discovery powertrain discussed here is outside those planned electric and plug-in hybrid categories.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
Businesses using the VAT Flat Rate Scheme do not normally recover input VAT on recurring car hire. The separate capital-goods exception does not turn hire invoices into a vehicle purchase. Check HMRC’s Flat Rate Scheme guidance.
The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
Use Land Rover range, Land Rover Defender, Discovery Sport, company-car BiK guide, request a callback to narrow your choice or discuss a quotation.
Yes. Tell IVF the business, mileage, passenger and towing requirements. The exact D350 specification and supply need confirmation, with Business Contract Hire subject to status and individual funder criteria.
No. Discovery Sport is a separate model with its own IVF route. This page covers passenger Discovery. Engine, seating and towing figures must not be transferred between the two names.
No. Land Rover UK identifies the cited D350 as a diesel mild hybrid. It is not a PHEV or fully electric car, and it does not receive their tax treatment simply because hybrid appears in the description.
The capture includes S, Dynamic SE, Dynamic HSE, Metropolitan Edition, Landmark, Gemini, Tempest and 35th Edition, plus an S Revised entry. All use D350 descriptions; equipment, model year and supply need individual confirmation.
Do not assume the separate maximum figures can be combined. Check the exact towing, gross vehicle, gross train and nose-weight limits against the real passenger, luggage and trailer load, plus the required towing equipment.
The cited Land Rover UK seven-seat D350 benchmark is 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds. It is not a 0-62 mph figure and should not be relabelled when comparing manufacturer data.
Test access with the middle row and child seats in their intended positions, then load the luggage required for the same journey. A maximum cargo configuration does not show the space available with every passenger aboard.
Yes if the required body, access or capability makes Defender relevant. Treat it as a separate specification decision. Its image or badge does not establish which vehicle better fits your actual passengers and load.
No. The manufacturer presentation gives a from figure for its reference. Obtain the actual vehicle’s certified emissions, fuel classification and P11D, then apply the relevant tax-year rules with your accountant.
Name the D350 edition, required seats and equipment, intended towing use, annual mileage, agreement holder and maintenance preference. Ask for a complete rental schedule, tax provisions, fees and return responsibilities before application.
