Mazda MX-5 leasing suits drivers who want a two-seat petrol sports car rather than an all-purpose family vehicle. Intelligent Vehicle Finance can discuss Roadster and RF listings, with a clear distinction between current catalogue cars and the announced 2027 range. Confirm the engine, roof, model year and actual supply before choosing.
The MX-5 is a deliberate choice for someone who enjoys a compact sports car and can live within its two-seat layout. A private driver might use it every day, or alongside a household car with more carrying capacity. A business owner should be equally clear about whether customer visits involve one passenger and a bag, or colleagues and equipment that simply will not fit.
Our starting point is the roof and the way you drive, before the trim badge. Try the car with the roof closed, in the shoes and outerwear you use regularly. Check your knee clearance, seat travel and sight lines at junctions. If getting in and out feels awkward on a dry showroom visit, account for a narrow parking bay and wet weather before signing a multi-year agreement.
Three different approaches to a two-seat sports car
| Model | Reason to consider it | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Mazda MX-5 | Open-top petrol driving; Roadster or RF roof choice | Check the particular engine and model year during the range change. |
| Alpine A110 | An enclosed sports-car alternative | Consider a fixed-roof driving experience if open-air motoring is secondary. |
| MG Cyberster | An electric roadster alternative | Assess home charging, journey stops and the different company-car tax basis. |
These are alternative ownership experiences, not a performance ranking. Test access, driving position and luggage fit before comparing agreements; equal monthly terms cannot make different cars interchangeable.
The IVF grid checked on 28 September 2026 contains eight entries. The 1.5 132 Prime-Line and Exclusive-Line each appear as Convertible and Coupe. The 2.0 184 Exclusive-Line and Homura also appear in both body styles. These names describe the captured catalogue; they do not establish that every version can still be supplied or ordered from the factory.
Mazda's UK release of 26 August says the 2027 range arrives in January with Roadster and RF versions of Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, Homura and Homura Plus, all using a 136ps 1.5-litre engine. It explains that the 2.0-litre is ending, with existing UK stock expected to cover demand into January. That is a manufacturer statement about its network, not an IVF stock promise. Ask us to identify the exact car behind a quotation.
A fabric-roof Roadster and an RF answer different preferences even when their engines match. Consider how often you intend to lower the roof, where the car will be parked overnight and whether you prefer the RF's more enclosed appearance. Neither body style adds rear seats. A Coupe label in the IVF catalogue should therefore prompt a roof-specification check, not an assumption that you have found a different four-seat model.
Take your usual travel bag to a viewing and try it in the luggage compartment instead of judging from a brochure photograph. Allow somewhere secure for work items when the roof is open. A passenger seat occupied by luggage is no longer available to a colleague, so assess your busiest normal day rather than the easiest trip you can imagine.
The present 132ps 1.5 and 184ps 2.0 catalogue labels must not be combined with the forthcoming 136ps specifications. The same grade name can carry different chassis equipment across years and engines. For an enthusiast, suspension, seats and braking equipment may matter more than convenience features, but the written specification should establish exactly which hardware is included in the quoted car.
For regular commuting, assess ride comfort on a familiar uneven road and how easily you can manage low-speed manoeuvres. For longer journeys, spend enough time in the seat to judge support rather than relying on its appearance. Discuss transmission requirements at the outset. A request for a particular engine or gearbox narrows the search; it does not make an older catalogue listing an available vehicle.
Think through weather, parking and work obligations together. A route with frequent tight parking spaces rewards an access test with the doors only partly open. Regular motorway calls make cabin noise with the roof closed worth assessing. If you carry presentation equipment, measure the actual cases and loading aperture; a small sports car is a poor choice when essential work equipment has to be left behind.
Insurance should reflect commuting or business use as appropriate, all intended drivers and where the car is kept. Discuss modifications or accessories with the funder before assuming they are permitted. Keep maintenance obligations separate from the attraction of a sports badge: tyres, servicing and condition at return all belong in the decision. Track use requires specific agreement and cover; a normal road lease must never be assumed to include it.
Tell us whether the Roadster or RF is essential, which of the current engine descriptions you are considering and whether January's announced range affects your timing. Then separate essential equipment from preferences such as colour. This helps avoid comparing a run-out car with a future model as though the two quotations describe the same thing.
The live grid displays rental figures. To compare them properly, align the agreement length, mileage, initial rental and maintenance basis, and ask how any additional charges are handled. If the car is for a director, put the employee's tax cost beside the business outlay. An enjoyable test drive can settle the driving choice; it cannot settle the contract or tax position on its own.
An MX-5 supplied to an employee or director for private use follows petrol company-car tax rules. The forthcoming engine announcement is not a tax certificate for an older 132ps or 184ps car.
Use the P11D value and certified CO2 of the actual MX-5, then apply the relevant percentage for each tax year. The table shows the maximum-band path only, not an assigned rate for this model. A personally contracted car does not become a company car simply because its driver runs a business; have the accountant compare the proposed arrangements before ordering.
Company-car BiK benchmarks, 2026/27 to 2029/30
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High-CO2 petrol or qualifying diesel at the maximum band | 37% | 37% | 38% | 39% |
These are conditional tax bands, not assigned rates for every Mazda MX-5. Confirm the supplied car’s P11D, certified CO2, fuel type and registration date. Diesel supplements can apply where the required emissions certification is absent, subject to the annual maximum.
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 28 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, annual VED after year one is £200 before supplements. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration; zero-emission cars pay £10. Later cash rates are not confirmed here. Check the funder’s treatment of increases.
Expensive Car Supplement. The £440 annual supplement lasts five years from year two. List-price thresholds, including relevant options before discounts, are over £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, and over £50,000 for zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Registration date matters. Plug-in hybrids use the £40,000 threshold. Check GOV.UK’s VED rules.
Planned eVED. eVED is planned from April 2028 alongside VED, subject to legislation and implementation: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p for plug-in hybrids. It is not currently charged. CPI uprating is proposed from 2029/30; later cash rates are unconfirmed. Check the funder’s treatment and the government’s consultation response. The non-plug-in Mazda MX-5 falls outside these planned categories.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
Businesses using the VAT Flat Rate Scheme do not normally recover input VAT on recurring car hire. The separate capital-goods exception does not turn hire invoices into a vehicle purchase. Check HMRC’s Flat Rate Scheme guidance.
The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
Use Mazda leasing, Alpine A110 leasing, MG Cyberster leasing, company-car BiK guide, business car leasing to narrow your choice or discuss a quotation.
You can ask IVF for Business Contract Hire, subject to funder criteria. First establish whether the car meets the business task: it has two seats and limited carrying flexibility. A director with private use also needs an individual company-car tax calculation, separate from the business quotation.
They offer different roof arrangements and appearances. Both retain the two-seat sports-car task. IVF's Convertible and Coupe catalogue descriptions should be matched to Roadster or RF in the written vehicle specification, especially when comparing cars from different model years.
Mazda's UK announcement dated 26 August 2026 says the 2.0-litre will not continue into the 2027 model year. It describes existing UK stock during the transition. IVF still lists 2.0 184 versions, but an individual car's supply needs confirmation.
Mazda has announced January 2027 UK arrival, with a 136ps 1.5-litre engine across Roadster and RF grades. This is published manufacturer timing, not an IVF delivery date. The 132ps entries currently captured in IVF's grid are not that new engine specification.
The capture contains Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line and Homura, in the engine and roof combinations explained above. Homura Plus belongs to the announced 2027 line-up rather than the captured grid. Ask for model year and the complete equipment schedule to avoid mixing the two ranges.
The UK versions covered here are petrol cars. Do not apply the electric company-car percentage or a plug-in hybrid range band to them. If an electric open-top car is your actual requirement, the MG Cyberster is a separate comparison with its own charging considerations.
It can if two seats and its luggage arrangement meet every essential journey. Check shopping, work bags, overnight travel and any passenger commitments with the actual car. It is unsuitable when your regular travel requires rear seats, regardless of how attractive the driving experience is.
Keep roof, engine and model year constant, then align term, mileage, initial rental, maintenance and fees. A quote for a current run-out derivative is not directly equivalent to an anticipated future specification. Ask what exact vehicle has been checked before making a commitment.
Do not assume either is included. Ask for the maintenance schedule and contract inclusions in writing, and obtain insurance appropriate to the car and its use. A warranty covers defined defects under its terms; it is not the same as a servicing or tyre package.
No contractual purchase option is included in contract hire. The car is returned subject to the agreement's mileage and condition requirements. Consider that return obligation before fitting accessories or making changes to the car.
Bring your passenger, journey and equipment requirements. We can help turn them into a clear vehicle and contract brief.
