Your Mercedes-Benz SL-Class leasing decision

Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps business and private drivers compare Mercedes-AMG SL leasing on the SL-Class route. The current UK range includes SL 43, V8 models and SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE. Match powertrain choice to your journeys, rear-seat expectations and luggage; the performance hybrid is a different proposition from a long-range electric commuter.

SL leasing is a roadster decision before it is a power comparison

Mercedes-Benz currently presents SL 43, SL 55, SL 63 and SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE in its UK range. The IVF route is called SL-Class, but the current reference is the Mercedes-AMG SL roadster. Do not confuse it with the discontinued SLK/SLC or assume that older SL roof and seating arrangements describe this generation. The June 2026 UK production brochure is the reference used here, subject to matching the offered vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz SL-Class leasing: key facts

  • Mercedes-Benz UK’s current SL page and June 2026 production brochure cover the Mercedes-AMG SL roadster; this is not a discontinued SLK or SLC route.
  • The June 2026 UK SL 43 reference uses a 1,991 cc four-cylinder petrol engine with 421 hp; SL 55 and SL 63 use 3,982 cc V8 engines.
  • The same brochure lists SL 55 at 476 hp, SL 63 at 585 hp and SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE at 816 hp system output. Engine and system figures are different measures.
  • The manufacturer describes the SL as 2+2, with the rear positions intended for occupants up to 1.50 metres tall. Check the actual occupant and approved restraint arrangement.
  • The June 2026 SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE benchmark is 7 miles WLTP electric range, with 25-100% AC charging in 1 hour 30 minutes at 3.7 kW. Match production version and equipment; conditions change results.
  • Five personal derivative links were captured on IVF: two SL 43 grades, SL 55 4MATIC+, SL 63 4MATIC+ and SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE.
  • GOV.UK: the maximum company-car BiK band is 37% in 2026/27 and 39% in 2029/30; the exact car can fall in a lower band.

Read the five IVF descriptions as three powertrain decisions

IVF’s checked page lists SL 43 421 Premium and Premium Plus, SL 55 4MATIC+ Premium Plus, SL 63 4MATIC+ Premium Plus and SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE Premium Plus. Those names establish the catalogue choices we are discussing; they do not prove supply. Request the exact production year, equipment grade and registration status on any quotation, particularly if it is compared with a vehicle from a different production period.

The SL 43 reference has a 1,991 cc four-cylinder petrol engine, 421 hp engine output and a mild-hybrid system. Mercedes-Benz’s UK technical page identifies rear-wheel drive. The SL 55 and SL 63 use 3,982 cc V8 engines, listed at 476 hp and 585 hp respectively, with 4MATIC+ descriptions. Choose between these around the driving experience you want and the equipment actually supplied; a higher output number does not resolve access, comfort or luggage requirements.

The SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE adds a plug-in hybrid system and a quoted 816 hp system output. That is not directly the same measure as the combustion-engine figures above. The brochure’s electric-range reference is only 7 miles WLTP for this June 2026 version. Treat it as a performance-hybrid choice, not evidence that your normal commute will be covered electrically. Ask for the precise battery, certification and equipment of the offered car before applying current figures to it.

Try the roof, the rear seats and the parking space

The manufacturer describes a fabric roof and a 2+2 layout. Its June 2026 brochure states that the rear positions accommodate occupants up to 1.50 metres tall. That is a clear reason to test the actual passenger requirement rather than call it an unrestricted four-adult car. Check the approved seating and restraint instructions, and try entry and exit with the front seat in your normal driving position. Occasional use still needs a suitable occupant arrangement.

Measure the space in which you will enter and leave the car. A broad door and a low seat can demand more usable clearance than a bay’s painted width suggests. The current SL 43 UK dimensional reference is 4,700 mm long and 2,100 mm wide including mirrors. Match those figures to the proposed version and check the route into your garage. Driver-assistance equipment can help with positioning, but it does not remove the need for access space.

The performance hybrid changes the luggage conversation too

The June 2026 UK technical table lists 213 litres of boot capacity for SL 43, SL 55 and SL 63, against 110 litres for SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE. The table labels the measure “seats down”, so use it as a manufacturer comparison reference and verify the real loading arrangement rather than making a roof-state promise from it. Bring the bags you intend to carry. A compact opening and an awkwardly shaped suitcase can matter more than the headline litres.

For the plug-in version, decide where charging would happen even though electric range is short. The brochure quotes a 25-100% charging interval of 1 hour 30 minutes using 3.7 kW AC equipment. This is the June 2026 SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE test reference, not a rapid-charge or empty-to-full promise. Actual supplied version, battery conditions and available electrical output need to match. There is no reason to use an EQV or other electric model’s charging capability as a substitute.

Make the quotation reflect how an SL will actually be used

For business use, check company policy and the total tax path before committing to a derivative. The mild-hybrid SL 43 does not gain plug-in treatment merely because it has electrical assistance. The SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE requires a separate emissions, electric-range and registration assessment. A low company-car percentage shown in a manufacturer price table is not sufficient evidence that every offered car qualifies under HMRC’s conditions.

Mercedes-Benz SL-Class company-car tax across the lease

The June 2026 SL brochure gives 206 or 215 g/km for the two SL 43 grades, 305 g/km for SL 55 and SL 63, and 228 g/km for SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE. These are named UK references; verify the offered car’s certified figures and options. The plug-in model’s published 16% reference depends on the relevant easement conditions, not low tailpipe CO2 alone.

For an employee or director with private use, multiply the actual P11D by the applicable percentage, then apply the individual tax rate and relevant adjustments. Sole-trader use follows different rules.

SL petrol/mild-hybrid reference at maximum band37%37%38%39%
SL PHEV only if eligible for deemed 1 g/km easement, range under 30 miles16%17%18%19%

These are conditional tax bands, not assigned rates for every Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. Confirm the supplied car’s P11D, certified CO2, fuel type and registration date. Diesel supplements can apply where the required emissions certification is absent, subject to the annual maximum.

The electric-mile figures above are HMRC band thresholds, not promises of this car’s driving range. Newer plug-in hybrid certification can show more than 50 g/km. A temporary company-car easement may treat an eligible car as 1 g/km where the registration date, electric range and Euro-status conditions are met; it is not automatic and must not be transferred to lease-rental deductions. Check the vehicle documents and HMRC’s plug-in hybrid conditions with your accountant.

Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 24 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, ordinary car VED after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on the supplied car’s certified emissions and registration rules. Confirm how the funder treats tax increases. Later annual cash rates are not confirmed here.

Expensive Car Supplement. Petrol and plug-in hybrid cars use the more-than-£40,000 original list-price threshold, including relevant options, not the higher zero-emission threshold. The 2026/27 supplement is £440 a year for five years from the second licence, alongside standard VED. Confirm registration date and the agreement’s treatment of the charge. Check GOV.UK’s VED rules.

Planned eVED. From April 2028 the government proposes 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrid cars, including relevant existing cars, in addition to VED. It is subject to legislation and implementation, not currently in force; CPI uprating is proposed from 2029/30. The petrol and mild-hybrid SL references are outside that proposed PHEV category. Confirm the funder’s treatment before choosing a term spanning introduction.

VAT and the business accounts

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.

The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.

Build the quotation around the way you will use it

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

Mercedes-Benz SL-Class leasing questions

Is the SL-Class route for the current Mercedes-AMG SL?

Yes. The current UK manufacturer page and June 2026 production brochure cover Mercedes-AMG SL 43, SL 55, SL 63 and SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE. Match the offered year and specification; do not substitute older SL or discontinued SLK/SLC details.

Which SL versions does IVF list for leasing?

The captured route has SL 43 421 Premium and Premium Plus, SL 55 4MATIC+ Premium Plus, SL 63 4MATIC+ Premium Plus and SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE Premium Plus. These five catalogue descriptions do not confirm stock or timing.

Can I compare business and personal SL leasing?

Yes, but use the same identified car, term, mileage and inclusions. A business driver also needs the correct P11D and tax-year path. Agreement type does not remove the need to test the roadster’s passenger and luggage limitations.

Is the SL 43 a plug-in hybrid?

No. The June 2026 UK reference is a four-cylinder petrol mild hybrid. The plug-in choice described here is SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE. Do not assign plug-in company-car treatment to the SL 43 because it has electrical assistance.

How much electric range does SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE have?

The June 2026 UK brochure benchmark is 7 miles WLTP. Match production version, certification and equipment to the quoted IVF car. Conditions affect actual range; this is a performance hybrid, not a long-range electric commuting proposition.

Does the SL plug-in hybrid use rapid DC charging?

The checked UK brochure gives a 3.7 kW AC reference: 25-100% in 1 hour 30 minutes for the June 2026 SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE. Do not substitute another Mercedes model’s charging figures; confirm the actual supplied specification.

Can four adults use the current SL comfortably?

Do not assume that from a four-seat description. Mercedes-Benz calls it 2+2 and specifies rear occupants up to 1.50 metres tall. Test the intended passenger and approved restraint arrangement, and compare the separate CLE when rear use is important.

Does the performance hybrid keep the same luggage capacity?

The June 2026 UK table lists 110 litres for SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE and 213 litres for the other SL references. Its measure is labelled seats down. Verify the real roof and load configuration and test your bags before choosing.

Does the SL 63 S E PERFORMANCE automatically get 16% BiK?

No. The brochure shows that percentage for its reference, but eligibility must be checked against HMRC’s plug-in easement conditions, registration date, Euro status and certified range. Do not transfer the benefit calculation to rental deductions or VED.

Why compare an SL with CLE and 911 Cabriolet?

They test different parts of the requirement: a dedicated SL roadster, a CLE cabriolet passenger task and a 911 sports-car alternative. Choose the exact open-top body on each route and compare access, luggage and driving priorities directly.
