Volvo leasing: build the shortlist around everyday use

The useful Volvo decision is usually between a familiar way of travelling and a different way of powering it. You may want to retain a higher seating position, move from an estate to an SUV, or give several passengers more room. Establish those requirements before choosing between the electric and hybrid ranges. The car that looks similar in a photograph may have a different platform, cabin or luggage arrangement.

EX30 deserves a close look for a compact electric brief. EX40 and EC40 let you compare body shape within a different size category. XC60 and EX60 require a more fundamental hybrid-versus-electric discussion, while XC90 and EX90 bring larger-family needs into focus. ES90 serves an executive passenger task without assuming an SUV is necessary; V60 keeps the estate option in view.

Volvo lease deals become meaningful when the exact body, model year and powertrain are written down. A retained V90 or S90 route is useful for someone replacing that car, but it must not be mistaken for a current factory-order promise.

Volvo leasing: key facts

  1. Volvo’s current electric model names include EX30, EX40, EC40, EX60, EX90 and ES90; XC60 is a separate hybrid SUV family.
  2. Volvo UK states that V90 is no longer available to order in this market; S60 is discontinued in the UK and S90 is a legacy model.
  3. The V60 provides an estate comparison to the SUV range; current UK information and older catalogue specifications must be distinguished.
  4. Volvo UK’s component warranty is 36 months or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, subject to its terms.
  5. Zero-emission company-car BiK is 4% in 2026/27, then 5%, 7% and 9% in the following three tax years.
  6. A plug-in hybrid Volvo needs certified emissions and electric mileage data for tax; a mild hybrid is not treated as a battery-electric car.

Compare Volvo models and lease deals

Use these Volvo model pages to compare the body and powertrain that fit your brief. Catalogue presence is not confirmation of supply; the exact vehicle and agreement are checked at enquiry.

Volvo model comparison: body, powertrain and buyer task

EC40Electric crossoverConsider roof shape and rear visibility alongside the more upright EX40.
XC90Large hybrid SUVCheck the selected seat layout and third-row luggage needs.
V60Estate; current UK plug-in hybrid referenceAn estate alternative to SUV height; distinguish current and older catalogue powertrains.
EX60Electric mid-size SUVConfirm new-generation specification and supply before planning a replacement date.
V90Legacy estate; UK ordering closedVolvo says no longer available to order in this market. Compare V60 or XC60.
ES90Electric executive carConsider passenger comfort and the longer body before selecting an SUV by habit.
EX90Large electric SUVCompare with XC90 around charging, seat configuration and luggage carried together.
C40Earlier electric model namingUse EC40 for the current comparison; establish any specifically offered C40 vehicle.
S60Discontinued UK saloonNo new supply established; compare V60 or another current executive car.
S90Legacy saloon; production endedCompare ES90 for an electric executive brief; retained route is not stock evidence.

Legacy routes remain linked to help existing drivers navigate a replacement. Volvo’s UK model-status statements take precedence over a catalogue entry. Check the model year and equipment on any specific vehicle offered; the current manufacturer range does not prove IVF allocation.

Understanding Volvo electric and hybrid model names

An EX badge identifies an electric SUV family in this shortlist, but XC60 and XC90 require a hybrid specification decision. A mild hybrid uses an engine with electrical assistance and does not need plugging in. A plug-in hybrid can cover suitable journeys using its charged battery before relying on the engine. These are different commitments for the driver and different tax assessments.

EX40 and EC40 should not be confused with earlier XC40 electric or C40 naming. A model-name change does not entitle an older vehicle to the latest battery, charging or equipment specification. If a quotation carries an earlier designation, ask for the corresponding model-year documentation.

For a business replacing an XC60 with an EX60, examine the new electric vehicle on its own terms. Check charging at the places the driver already visits, the exact equipment supplied and a confirmed delivery position. Familiar letters do not establish continuity of dimensions or controls.

Volvo business leasing

A Volvo fleet can contain several very different jobs: an EX30 for local travel, an executive ES90, or a larger SUV for a driver with family duties. Keep the employer’s agreement, the driver’s personal tax and practical charging access separate. An electric percentage is useful only after the driver can operate the selected car without unreasonable disruption.

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.

The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.

Volvo personal leasing

For a private Volvo lease, begin with how your household uses the car across a full year. School journeys, holidays, sports equipment and visits to relatives can reveal a different requirement from the daily commute. Compare PCH terms using realistic annual mileage and the exact seats and options you need.

BiK is a company-car matter, not a discount on your personal agreement. Your comparison should include insurance, charging or petrol, servicing arrangements and return obligations. A more compact Volvo may fit regular life well, while an occasional large load may justify examining an estate or larger SUV before deciding.

Volvo company-car tax across the lease

For an EX30, EX40, EC40, EX60, EX90 or ES90 supplied as a zero-emission company car, the electric row below is the starting point. XC60, XC90 and V60 plug-in hybrids need their own certified data. Do not compare only the first year if the agreement extends into the later hybrid-band changes.

For an employee or director with private use, the taxable benefit normally starts with the car’s P11D value multiplied by the applicable BiK percentage. Personal tax then depends on the individual’s income tax rate and any relevant adjustments. The percentage is not the tax rate applied to the lease rental. A sole trader’s own business car use follows different rules.

The agreement can cross several tax years. Compare the whole path, not just the percentage in the year the car arrives.

These are conditional tax bands, not assigned rates for every Volvo. Confirm the supplied car’s P11D, certified CO2, fuel type and registration date. Diesel supplements can apply where the required emissions certification is absent, subject to the annual maximum.

The electric-mile figures above are HMRC band thresholds, not promises of this car’s driving range. Newer plug-in hybrid certification can show more than 50 g/km. A temporary company-car easement may treat an eligible car as 1 g/km where the registration date, electric range and Euro-status conditions are met; it is not automatic and must not be transferred to lease-rental deductions. Check the vehicle documents and HMRC’s plug-in hybrid conditions with your accountant.

Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 24 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.

Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is £440 a year in 2026/27 for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.

Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.

Charging a Volvo around the week you actually drive

Charging access should be discussed with the person who will plug in the car. If parking is shared, establish whether a charger can actually be installed and used. If workplace charging is central to the plan, consider office attendance, charging availability and what happens during leave. An EX90 carrying a family on holiday needs a different route plan from an EX30 used mainly for local appointments.

Compare electricity costs using the expected mix of home, workplace and public sessions. A headline tariff you find is irrelevant if it is unavailable where you park; use the tariff and charging hours you can reliably obtain. Include charging losses and any subscription or parking charges when assessing the arrangement.

For a V60 or XC60 plug-in hybrid, look at how often the battery will be replenished. Published combined consumption cannot represent every long journey after the electric portion has been used. Weather, load, wheels and driving speed also affect consumption and electric distance.

Volvo warranty and servicing

Volvo UK describes component cover for 36 months after registration or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. It requires a manufacturing or material defect; normal wear and tear or damage is not the same thing. A driver covering substantial annual mileage should check whether the mileage limit arrives before the lease ends.

The manufacturer gives separate high-voltage battery terms, so do not assume ordinary vehicle cover and battery cover have identical scope. Servicing must follow the applicable Volvo schedule. Ask the leasing adviser to distinguish manufacturer protection from the maintenance package, including who authorises work and whether tyre replacement is included.

Family access, load space and the first test drive

Test rear-seat access with your own child seats or regular passengers. A sloping roof can affect the way someone enters even when the published dimensions look adequate. In a larger Volvo, try the third row and then inspect the luggage area with those seats occupied. A folded-seat boot figure does not answer the family-holiday question.

Check the driver interface on a representative vehicle. Adjust the seating, mirrors and climate controls, pair a phone where permitted, and see how familiar tasks work. Software, connected-service terms and equipment differ by generation, so do not assume every Volvo catalogue entry has the latest functions or the same remaining subscription period.

For an estate replacement, compare the V60’s loading height and opening with the SUV alternatives. A larger external vehicle is not automatically easier for your particular cases, dog crate or mobility equipment. Bring dimensions and treat the viewing as a practical test.

How IVF quotes your Volvo lease

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

Useful next steps

Use the model pages to reduce the shortlist to one or two bodies. BMW and Audi provide relevant alternatives for executive and SUV tasks; the electric hub gives a broader comparison when charging is already part of your plan.

Volvo leasing questions

Can I arrange Volvo business leasing?

Yes. IVF can discuss Business Contract Hire for an SME, company director or business driver, subject to status and individual funder criteria. The useful starting brief includes passengers, annual mileage, charging access and the required model or body style.

How should I compare Volvo lease deals?

Match model year, powertrain, equipment, term, mileage and maintenance before comparing quotations. Volvo’s electric and hybrid names can describe different cars, and a catalogue route does not establish an available vehicle or a delivery date.

Is the Volvo XC60 fully electric?

No. XC60 is the hybrid SUV family in this comparison. EX60 is the separate electric model. Ask for the exact XC60 mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid specification rather than applying EX60 battery or charging information to it.

Should I compare XC90 with EX90?

Yes, if you need a larger Volvo for family and business use. Compare the actual seat layout, luggage with passengers aboard and charging arrangements. The hybrid XC90 and electric EX90 require their own specification and operating-cost assessment.

What is the difference between EX40 and EC40?

Both are electric choices, with different body shapes. The more upright EX40 and coupe-style EC40 should be assessed for rear access, visibility and load opening. Earlier XC40 electric and C40 catalogue names also require model-year confirmation.

Can I still order a new Volvo V90?

Volvo UK says V90 is no longer available to order in this market. A retained IVF listing does not prove remaining supply. Compare the V60 or XC60 while an adviser checks whether a particular suitable vehicle can be offered.

Are S60 and S90 current UK choices?

Volvo identifies S60 as discontinued in the UK and S90 as a legacy model no longer produced. Their model pages remain useful replacement guides. No new supply is established here; consider current estate, electric executive or SUV alternatives.

What company-car tax applies to an electric Volvo?

A zero-emission Volvo uses 4% BiK for 2026/27, followed by 5%, 7% and 9% through 2029/30. The driver’s tax also depends on P11D value and personal circumstances. A hybrid Volvo needs a different assessment.

What does a Volvo lease include?

It provides use of the agreed car for the term and mileage in the contract. IVF offers named specialist support and free UK delivery. Check road-tax provisions, optional maintenance, insurance and any applicable charges in the written quotation.

How do warranty and the return process fit together?

Volvo’s component warranty has time, mileage and coverage conditions; it does not remove your maintenance or return obligations. At the end of contract hire the car is returned, with mileage, condition and missing equipment assessed under the funder’s terms.
