Ford Explorer business and personal leasing: the UK electric SUV

The Explorer sold in the current UK passenger-car range is electric. That simple distinction matters because the name is also used on a different combustion SUV overseas. This page is about the British battery-electric model and the everyday decision it presents: whether its space, equipment and charging requirements fit family and business travel.

For an SME driver, start by describing the normal mileage pattern and how often the car returns to a dependable charging point. For a household, add holidays, shared-driver journeys and the items that regularly travel in the boot. Standard Range and Extended Range can then be compared against an actual task rather than an assumption that the larger battery must always be preferable.

The Explorer is less suitable where an electric routine cannot be made dependable or where you are expecting the seating and dimensions of the overseas namesake. It should also remain separate from Ford Mustang and Mustang Mach-E decisions. The combustion Mustang is a different performance-car task; the Mach-E is a separate electric model. A familiar Ford badge does not make their specifications interchangeable.

Match the catalogue battery to the manufacturer’s model year

IVF’s live route contains Style, Select, Collection and Premium descriptions with several battery labels. The capture includes 52 kWh and 58 kWh Standard Range entries, as well as 77 kWh and 79 kWh descriptions among Extended Range versions. Comfort and Driver Assist pack variants are listed, and some entries identify AWD. This is a mixed catalogue, not one uniform current specification.

Ford’s revised UK price list, effective from 1 April 2026, identifies 58 kWh usable Standard Range rear-wheel-drive cars, 79 kWh usable Extended Range rear-wheel-drive versions and a 77 kWh usable Extended Range AWD Premium. Earlier IVF labels require their own model-year confirmation. The battery capacities in the manufacturer document are explicitly usable values; do not silently compare them with a gross-capacity figure from another source.

Ask the quotation to identify model year, battery, driven wheels, grade and packs together. If an IVF catalogue description and the supplied car’s manufacturer specification differ, have that reconciled before relying on range or charging information. A Style with selected comfort equipment and a differently equipped Premium can present quite different practical choices even when both are described as Standard Range.

Choose range for the repeat journey and charging for the difficult day

Ford’s April 2026 UK list gives a 374-mile WLTP combined benchmark for the 79 kWh Extended Range rear-wheel-drive Style or Select configuration. That is not the figure for every Explorer: the document separately identifies other grades, batteries and driven-wheel combinations. Match the exact car and equipment before using a benchmark. Temperature, motorway speed, load and climate use change real distance.

A useful electric-car plan has both an ordinary day and a difficult day. On the ordinary day, establish how much charge can be added during the time the vehicle is already parked. On the difficult day, identify the alternative charging stop if the preferred location is occupied or unavailable. Leave a sensible arrival margin rather than treating an official combined-cycle figure as an uninterrupted motorway promise.

Charging power also varies between the listed configurations. Ask for the exact supplied version’s AC and DC capability, cable provision and battery-preparation procedure. Ford lists a heat pump as an option in the revised UK document, so do not assume it is present merely because the car is an EV or a higher grade. Compare the fitted equipment and your winter routine before assigning value to that option.

Equipment and interior practicality need a hands-on comparison

The Explorer’s cabin should be tested in the way you will use it: phone connected, navigation visible and the seat set for the actual driver. Ford’s revised UK equipment list includes the SYNC Move touchscreen across the listed grades, while seating, audio, tailgate and other equipment differ. Try the control layout rather than assuming a large display will automatically suit your preferences.

For a family, fit the intended child seats and check access with the front occupants seated normally. For business use, bring the equipment cases or samples that regularly accompany you. Load the boot, then check whether cables and frequently needed items remain accessible. Exterior photographs and luggage-volume claims cannot settle the shape or access questions that matter to a particular household.

Compare the Driver Assistance and Comfort pack contents against your specific needs. Parking views, seat adjustment and a powered tailgate can address different tasks, and their presence varies with grade and pack. Ask how the supplied car’s assistance features are operated and where their limits lie. If several people will share the Explorer, include an introduction to charging, drive controls and essential settings in the handover plan.

A clear Explorer enquiry keeps the vehicle and contract aligned

Give IVF the battery and drive layout you want to compare, together with the features that are essential. Mark a preference as a preference so a useful alternative can be identified without accidentally changing the brief. If towing or roof-mounted equipment is involved, request the exact vehicle’s approved limits, required fittings and the effect on loading and range before adding those uses to the agreement.

For a company car, obtain P11D and the relevant list-price calculation, including selected options. The electric BiK path is the same percentage schedule across these zero-emission variants, but a higher taxable value changes the employee's cost. The Expensive Car Supplement is a separate threshold question. Neither can be answered from the catalogue rental alone.

For personal leasing, compare the agreement together with insurance, charging access and maintenance responsibilities. Check how road-tax changes and the planned mileage-based eVED are handled if the term spans their introduction. The UK Explorer can then be assessed as a complete travel proposition, with its own equipment and battery identity, rather than as an overseas model or a substitute name for Mustang Mach-E.

Ford Explorer company-car tax across the lease

The UK electric Explorer uses the zero-emission company-car percentage schedule. Compare P11D and options as well as the percentage, and use the appropriate year when an agreement crosses an April tax-year boundary.

Start the employee-benefit calculation with the confirmed P11D multiplied by the relevant annual percentage, before personal tax and adjustments. Private availability matters. Sole traders should obtain advice on their own-car use rather than assume this employee calculation applies.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). A qualifying new electric Explorer currently attracts £10 first-year VED and the £200 standard annual payment afterwards, before supplements, under 2026/27 rates. Road tax is therefore part of the discussion. Later-year amounts are not fixed by these current cash figures.

Expensive Car Supplement. For qualifying zero-emission registrations from 1 April 2025, the supplement threshold is list price above £50,000, including relevant options. The 2026/27 addition is £440 annually for five years starting with the second licence. Check the configured Explorer under GOV.UK’s VED rules.

Planned eVED. An Explorer lease crossing April 2028 may span the planned introduction of eVED at 3p per mile for electric cars, additional to VED. CPI uprating is proposed from 2029/30. Legislation and implementation are still required. Review the government response and obtain the funder’s treatment before relying on a whole-term cost comparison.

VAT and the business accounts

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Build the quotation around the way you will use it

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
