Ford van leasing: key decisions

  • Transit Custom is the medium-van starting point; Transit is the larger range.
  • Ford offers electric and diesel commercial routes, with plug-in hybrid choices in selected models.
  • Panel, crew and conversion needs must be specified separately.
  • Confirm the exact commercial derivative, fitted equipment and availability before ordering.

Use the vehicle listings to identify a possible specification, then ask us to confirm the exact derivative, availability and lease basis. If you cannot see the body or powertrain you need, tell us your requirement.

An administration fee of £295 + VAT applies. Any other applicable fees and the lease cost components will be confirmed in your quotation and agreement.

The Transit name covers several different jobs

Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps businesses compare Ford van leasing from compact Transit Courier and Connect to Transit Custom and the larger Transit. Ranger, Transit City and passenger-carrying Tourneo Custom serve different jobs. Start with the working body, then match payload, powertrain and the lease agreement to the way you operate.

Do not move straight from recognising the Ford badge to selecting a trim. Courier, Connect, Custom and Transit occupy different places in the working range, while the newer Transit City introduces a separate electric platform. A familiar model name can conceal a change of body, generation or gross weight, particularly when a catalogue spans several model years.

Begin with the load that travels most often, the people who must come with it and the places the vehicle must enter. A compact van may make repeated urban stops easier. A medium body can suit a fitted service vehicle or crew. A larger Transit is relevant for substantial volume or a specified conversion. The Ranger pickup and Tourneo Custom passenger vehicle should be compared only when their body type answers the actual requirement.

Ford Vans leasing: key facts

  1. Transit Courier and Transit Connect are separate compact van families, not shorter versions of Transit Custom.
  2. Ford’s MY2024.5 Transit Custom brochure lists 5.8 m³ for L1 H1 and 6.8 m³ for L2 H1, using the stated maximum-volume method.
  3. The MY2025.5 Transit panel range spans 9.5-15.1 m³ across its named body and drivetrain combinations.
  4. Transit Custom offers diesel, plug-in hybrid and E-Transit Custom electric routes; the larger Transit has diesel and E-Transit options.
  5. Ford UK now lists the all-electric Transit City. Its catalogue and supply details must be matched to the specific body.
  6. Ranger double-cab tax treatment differs from ordinary panel vans. Tourneo Custom is a passenger requirement, not a default van-tax choice.

Tourneo CustomPassenger transportHow many occupants and how much luggage travel together?

These figures are dated UK reference points. Model-year changes, fittings and different measurement methods prevent a simple capacity ranking from settling the choice. Catalogue presence confirms a route to discuss, not stock or acceptance.

For payload, compare a specified version: the MY2024.5 Custom L1 H1 table spans 908-1,407 kg across its named series, while the MY2025.5 Transit 500 L4 H3 reference is 2,357-2,412 kg at 5,000 kg gross weight. The heavier Transit example is not a 3.5-tonne van allowance. Confirm the finished vehicle.

Use the smallest body that meets the complete brief

A shorter van can be easier to place at a customer site, but only if it carries the tools and replacement parts needed for the day. Compare Courier and Connect when the working load is compact. If the load requires stacking that blocks access or repeated return trips, reconsider the body rather than treating that inconvenience as a driver problem.

Custom becomes useful when the load arrangement needs more width or working room. Transit should enter the shortlist when the large body or a chassis-based conversion is required. Measure the doorway as well as the floor. A tall item that fits the internal height may still be awkward to load, and the longest body can add manoeuvring difficulty at every stop. Include roof systems and regular car-park limits in the measurement sheet.

Keep cargo, crew and passenger jobs separate

Transit Custom offers panel, Double Cab-in-Van and Multicab layouts. A second row changes both available load space and occupied weight. Multicab’s long loading section is useful only if the object fits its width; it does not make the remaining cargo area equivalent to a full panel van. Transit crew bodies and chassis conversions likewise need their own completed specifications.

For people-first work, follow Tourneo Custom rather than assuming a crew van offers the same passenger environment. Confirm seating, luggage room and the vehicle’s registration and tax category. A business running both deliveries and staff transport may need separate vehicle briefs. That is more useful than trying to make one catalogue label answer two incompatible tasks, particularly where a full passenger load leaves insufficient room for equipment.

Compare electric, hybrid and diesel by model family

The Custom family includes diesel, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric routes. Connect also has a plug-in hybrid option, while E-Transit Courier, E-Transit Custom, E-Transit and Transit City are distinct electric products. Do not transfer a battery, charging figure or towing limit between them because they share part of a name.

For a hybrid, establish how regularly it will be plugged in and which journeys can use that charge. For a pure electric van, build the route and charging plan together. For diesel, examine the normal distance, load and duty cycle. Each can be worth comparing against a defined working requirement; none should be selected on a range-wide claim that ignores the actual body or equipment. Written derivative details prevent a nominally similar quotation from answering a different question.

Ford business contract hire and VAT

For a business agreement, align annual mileage with the actual travelling pattern and specify maintenance on the same basis across the shortlist. Seasonal peaks, call-outs and changing contracts deserve consideration before choosing an allowance. An initial rental contributes to the hire cost; it is not refundable security or equity in the van.

A VAT-registered business using a qualifying commercial vehicle follows normal input-tax rules, with private use and VAT arrangements affecting recovery. The car-rental 50% restriction must not be applied automatically to every Ford van, and full recovery is not assured merely by a commercial invoice. Use IVF’s VAT explanation and HMRC guidance. Ask the accountant to assess the exact contract, especially where a pickup or passenger body is involved. Capital allowances, deductions and accounting presentation are separate questions.

Private customers need the right body and agreement

A personal enquiry should identify who will sign the agreement and how the vehicle will be used. IVF can then check the relevant funder route and VAT-inclusive quotation basis. Do not infer a particular personal product from the existence of a business catalogue entry, or assume that a sole trader and an employee with a company vehicle have the same tax position.

For Tourneo Custom, seats and passenger use are central. For a privately arranged commercial van, carrying tools or goods still needs the right insurance and permissions. Keep those operating requirements in the brief. A contract hire agreement normally ends with return, so consider whether permanent equipment or intended alterations fit that arrangement before requesting a proposal.

Panel-van benefit and the Ranger distinction

A qualifying company van available for unrestricted private use has a standard £4,170 taxable benefit in 2026/27. Employer-provided private fuel can add a £798 benefit. A qualifying zero-emission van currently has nil van benefit. Business use, ordinary commuting and insignificant other private use may meet the exemption conditions. These values and conditions come from HMRC’s van guidance; they are not a tax bill or a lease offer.

For Ranger double cabs, HMRC changed the benefit-in-kind approach from 6 April 2025. Qualifying earlier arrangements can retain transitional treatment until the earliest of disposal, lease expiry or 5 April 2029. EIM23151 concerns employment benefits only. Capital allowances use separate dates and guidance in CA23511. Obtain accountant advice; the VAT payload test does not settle these other regimes.

A multi-year quote needs annual tax checks through 2027/28, 2028/29 and 2029/30. Do not freeze current van cash benefits in the forecast. Passenger Tourneo and a pickup treated as a car require their own company-car calculations. The company-car guide and double-cab transition explanation provide onward routes. Tax checked 28 September 2026; circumstances and future rules can alter the result.

Road tax and future vehicle charges

Larger Transit derivatives and conversions can exceed 3,500 kg. Establish the driver’s licence entitlement, operator-licence position, tachograph rules and correct tax class with the relevant adviser. Operator guidance and licence categories do not make every heavy Transit suitable for every business.

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). In 2026/27, TC39 light goods vehicles registered from 1 March 2001 and not over 3,500 kg revenue weight pay £360 as a single annual payment, including zero-emission vans. Other classes and payment arrangements differ. Check the DVLA tax class and the funder’s treatment of future increases.

Expensive Car Supplement. This is a car-tax provision, not an addition automatically charged to a qualifying light goods van because its list price is high. Passenger versions need their own car VED and supplement check.

Planned eVED. The government’s July 2026 consultation response excludes vans, buses, coaches and HGVs from eVED at introduction. Do not add the planned April 2028 electric-car mileage charge to a van forecast. Recheck final legislation and vehicle classification.

An electric Ford needs a route-specific reserve

Ford’s electric pages and older brochures sometimes publish different ranges. The battery, model year and body behind the number matter more than choosing the largest headline. Obtain the quoted derivative’s current schedule, then assess the loaded winter route, motorway proportion, auxiliary demand and time available for charging. This range page deliberately avoids assigning one electric mileage figure to all listings.

At a depot, consider simultaneous charging demand and whether each vehicle can reach the point without blocking another. At home, establish permission, parking and the charging arrangement. For changing worksites, identify a practical fallback. A charger on a map is not proof it will be available, suitable for the van’s footprint or fast enough within the working timetable. Give those constraints to IVF alongside the vehicle requirement.

Ford support and conversion responsibilities

Ford UK’s commercial warranty page states three years or 100,000 miles for new commercial vehicles except Ranger, subject to its terms. Ranger must therefore be checked separately rather than inheriting the panel-van statement. Confirm the supplied vehicle’s commencement date and servicing obligations. Electric battery coverage is a separate schedule and should be read for the actual model.

For a working-body Transit, identify which organisation warrants the chassis, body and fitted equipment. Ask where a fault will be diagnosed and whether the selected maintenance package includes the conversion. Neither a manufacturer warranty nor a funder package automatically establishes a replacement-vehicle commitment. Document any continuity requirement before deciding, especially if the business cannot perform its work with an ordinary substitute panel van.

How your Ford quotation takes shape

Give IVF a separate brief for each Ford role: compact service van, crew vehicle, large load carrier or pickup. Keeping the work specification consistent makes the funder comparison useful and prevents body differences being hidden inside otherwise similar proposals.

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Intelligent Vehicle Finance checks the requirement against its panel of funders. A written proposal should identify the initial rental, subsequent rentals, contract length, mileage allowance, selected services and applicable fees. Assess equivalent vehicles and agreement terms together; a different body, weight class or maintenance package changes the comparison.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied vehicle’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

Take the right Ford route forward

Use the linked model page for the body you are considering, then bring the load dimensions, equipment list and expected mileage to the enquiry. If two Ford sizes appear viable, ask for the practical differences to be set out before choosing the funding term.

Ford Vans leasing questions

How is Transit Custom different from Transit?

Custom is Ford’s medium-van family; Transit is the larger range with additional body and weight choices. Start with the usable load space and completed payload needed for the job. A powertrain, roof or equipment option on one range is not automatically offered on the other.

Should I compare Courier or Connect for compact work?

Compare both against the measured load and access restrictions. They are separate compact families, with different body and powertrain choices. A longer Connect may answer a load-length requirement, while Courier may suit a smaller working brief. The exact derivative and its fitted equipment determine the result.

Is Transit City another name for E-Transit Custom?

No. Ford UK now lists Transit City as a separate all-electric working-van range. Its body, battery and technical schedule need their own verification. Do not use E-Transit Custom figures to describe it or infer immediate supply from its appearance in the catalogue.

Can Ford supply a plug-in hybrid van?

Selected UK Ford commercial families include plug-in hybrid choices, including Transit Custom and Connect. Confirm the exact body and current derivative. Regular charging is part of the operating case; a hybrid label does not establish that the normal working day will be completed electrically.

What should I compare for a crew and long materials?

Transit Custom Double Cab-in-Van and Multicab have different layouts. Measure the cargo area with the required passengers seated and check the width of any long-item passage. A full-length section alongside seating is not the same as a full-width panel-van floor.

Does Tourneo Custom receive panel-van tax treatment?

Do not assume so. Tourneo Custom is a passenger requirement and needs its own classification, benefit and road-tax assessment. A vehicle appearing on a commercial catalogue route does not automatically qualify for the rules applying to a goods van.

Does every Transit fit ordinary 3.5-tonne assumptions?

No. The range includes heavier vehicles and chassis conversions. Driver entitlement, operator licensing, tachograph duties and VED class depend on the exact vehicle and use. Resolve those questions before choosing a heavier derivative for its payload.

Does a one-tonne Ranger payload prove van benefit treatment?

No. VAT and employment benefits use different tests. Double-cab benefit treatment changed from April 2025, with conditional transitional arrangements for qualifying earlier vehicles. Capital allowances have separate rules. Ask the accountant to assess the supplied pickup and agreement in each regime.

Is the Ford warranty the same for Ranger and Transit?

Ford’s UK commercial warranty statement excludes Ranger from its general three-year or 100,000-mile commercial provision. Check Ranger’s specific terms separately. All vehicles require confirmation of warranty start date, service conditions and any distinct battery or conversion cover.

How can IVF compare two Ford leasing proposals fairly?

Use the same workload, annual mileage, term and maintenance requirement, then identify any differences in body, model year and equipment. Review all rental components and applicable fees in writing. A catalogue listing or an enquiry does not confirm stock, delivery timing or funder acceptance.
