Your Mercedes-Benz Citan leasing decision

Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps businesses choose a Mercedes-Benz Citan for compact service and delivery work. Match the body length, seating and payload to the equipment you actually carry, then assess diesel or eCitan against the daily route. Check the precise model year and specification before comparing lease terms.

Mercedes-Benz Citan business leasing: where it fits

The Citan suits a business that needs an organised equipment bay more than a large empty shell. Think of an engineer carrying diagnostic cases and replacement parts, or a delivery round whose individual consignments fit comfortably through a compact van’s doors. Its smaller scale is useful only if the normal working load fits without awkward stacking or repeated returns for supplies.

Make a list of the stock that stays aboard, the tools that come out at each appointment and any occasional bulky items. That is a better brief than simply asking for a small Mercedes-Benz. The choice between L1 and L2, panel and crew, and diesel and electric changes how much useful capacity remains after the vehicle is equipped.

Citan also deserves a direct comparison with Renault Kangoo. Renault Group confirms the shared production and platform relationship, but the vehicles have their own UK specifications, equipment and support routes. Compare the actual vans being offered rather than treating a common underlying architecture as proof of identical payload, warranty or lease terms.

Mercedes-Benz Citan leasing: key facts

  • January 2026 UK Citan panel-van brochure: L1 load length 1,806 mm and volume 2.9 m³; L2 length 2,170 mm and volume 3.62 m³.
  • The L1 UK drawing gives 1,260 mm between wheel arches and 1,256 mm load height. Check the actual lining, doors and load restraints.
  • 110 L1 BASE manual diesel benchmark: 680 kg payload at 2,230 kg GVW; the source includes a 75 kg driver.
  • September 2025 UK eCitan L1 BASE benchmark: 45 kWh battery, 90 kW motor, 176-mile combined WLTP range and 448 kg payload.
  • eCitan L2 BASE benchmark in that same document: 167-mile combined WLTP range and 616 kg payload at 2,490 kg GVW.

Match the Citan badge to the actual UK specification

IVF’s observed catalogue includes diesel, electric and crew descriptions, with both older Progressive or Premium names and newer BASE, PRO or SELECT wording. The January 2026 diesel brochure and September 2025 electric brochure are useful reference points, but they do not retrospectively define every catalogue entry. Obtain the model year and equipment list for the specific quotation.

The current diesel document lists 110 and 112 variants with gearbox choices dependent on the version. A higher engine designation does not mean it has the same payload as another body or transmission. The observed eCitan descriptions use 90 kW and 45 kWh labels; confirm that the offered vehicle matches the brochure’s battery, body and equipment before using its technical figures.

Choose L1 or L2 around the objects, not just cubic metres

The UK diesel brochure’s L1 panel van has a 1,806 mm loading length and 2.9 m³ quoted volume. L2 extends the stated length to 2,170 mm and volume to 3.62 m³. These figures describe named panel bodies; a crew layout gives people part of that space. Measure with the seats and partition in their working positions.

The L1 drawing shows 1,260 mm between wheel arches. A wide case that fits higher in the bay may not sit flat on its floor. Equally, a tall item may clear the internal roof but fail to pass through a door opening. Bring the outside dimensions of the largest object, including handles, packaging and the room needed to lift or restrain it.

Plan access to the tools used most often. If a service engineer opens the side door at every stop, a deep drawer or stacked spare parts can turn apparent capacity into wasted time. Ask a racking supplier to show how the installation works with the Citan’s actual openings, and retain access to tie-down points. Added lining and shelving consume both space and weight.

The electric payload deserves its own calculation

The diesel 110 L1 BASE manual row in the January 2026 UK table lists 680 kg payload at 2,230 kg gross vehicle weight. By contrast, the September 2025 eCitan L1 BASE table gives 448 kg at the same gross weight. These are specific comparison rows, not a claim that every electric Citan loses a fixed amount of payload against every diesel version.

The eCitan L2 BASE is shown with 616 kg payload at 2,490 kg GVW. That makes body and weight choice part of the electric assessment, not merely a decision about luggage space. The source includes its stated driver and charging-cable allowances; additional occupants, options, racking and the actual driver difference affect what remains for cargo.

For a parts-based business, weigh a realistic replenishment load, including liquids and packaging. A vehicle may cope comfortably near the end of a round while being too heavy when it leaves the depot. Use that fully stocked condition for the decision. Ask for the completed vehicle’s plated limits and individual axle information where the load is concentrated.

Assess eCitan charging against appointment patterns

Mercedes-Benz UK currently lists eCitan, checked 28 September 2026. Its September 2025 UK document describes a 45 kWh battery and 90 kW motor. The L1 BASE combined WLTP benchmark is 176 miles, while L2 BASE is 167 miles. Other trims differ. Those laboratory comparison figures must be matched to the supplied vehicle and should not be used as the distance a laden van will always cover.

The document quotes up to 75 kW DC charging and a 10-80% time of 38 minutes. It also describes 22 kW AC capability for the cited specification. Site supply, installed equipment, battery temperature and starting charge all matter. Confirm the actual onboard charging specification and whether the business has access to the electrical supply needed to use it.

A regular service round with a reliable overnight charger is a clearer starting case than a schedule that changes across a wide region every morning. Test the longest appointment day, including heating, detours and the return journey. If drivers park at home, agree permission and reimbursement and have a workable alternative for holidays or a failed charger. The charging arrangement needs an owner within the business.

Why compare Citan with Kangoo and Vito?

Citan and Kangoo share a platform relationship, but the UK technical tables show why a badge substitution is not a specification comparison. Look at the exact body, legal weights, equipment and powertrain offered. A Renault support arrangement and a Mercedes-Benz service arrangement should each be assessed against the locations and hours that matter to the business.

Vito is the next Mercedes-Benz size step when a compact load bay genuinely cannot carry the work. Before moving up, identify the item or crew requirement that Citan cannot accommodate. That prevents a larger vehicle being chosen simply to avoid organising the equipment. If the task regularly needs a second row of seats, compare dedicated crew bodies and their remaining cargo space.

Mercedes-Benz Citan van tax: 2026/27 and the years ahead

The Citan’s business case should separate running costs from employee benefits. An employee taking a company van home is not automatically taxed in the same way as a company-car driver; the use conditions matter.

The 2026/27 standard taxable values are £4,170 for the van and £798 where private fuel creates a charge. Neither is the amount of personal tax due. For a qualifying zero-emission van, the applicable van-benefit value is 0% of £4,170, giving £0. Check GOV.UK’s company-van benefit values.

Restricted business use can include commuting and insignificant private use under the exemption conditions. Record the restriction and check what happens in practice, especially when the vehicle stays at the driver’s home. Read the van exemption conditions.

The lease may continue through 2027/28, 2028/29 and 2029/30. Use the published van rules for each year when available, rather than carrying today’s cash benefit unchanged through the term. Tax checked 28 September 2026. Treatment depends on circumstances and can change; obtain advice from your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). Qualifying light goods vehicles in TC39 pay £360 for a single 12-month VED payment in 2026/27. This covers registration from 1 March 2001 and revenue weight up to 3,500 kg, including qualifying electric vans. Check the GOV.UK light-goods table. Confirm the funder’s treatment of VED and later increases.

Expensive Car Supplement. For Citan, separate the light-goods tax class from the car Expensive Car Supplement. A qualifying van is not subject to that car supplement merely because equipment increases its list price. Check GOV.UK’s vehicle-tax categories. Checked 28 September 2026.

Planned eVED. HM Treasury confirmed in its July 2026 consultation response that vans, buses, coaches and HGVs are out of scope at eVED’s intended April 2028 start. That prevents the electric-car proposal being presented as a current eCitan cost. Read the government’s eVED response. Checked 28 September 2026; future policy can change.

VAT and the business accounts

A Citan does not earn automatic full VAT recovery from its commercial badge. Normal VAT rules, taxable business use, private use and the operator’s VAT scheme determine what can be reclaimed. IVF’s van and car VAT guide and HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance explain the starting points.

Ask the accountant how the particular Citan agreement is treated for capital allowances and accounts. For accounting periods beginning from 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires lessee recognition of right-of-use assets and lease liabilities. The equivalent change was not made to FRS 105. Read HMRC’s accounting-standard summary. Checked 28 September 2026.

Talk through the vehicle and agreement with IVF, then confirm your tax treatment with your accountant.

Build the quotation around the way you will use it

Tell IVF your annual mileage, crew, loads, towing, fitted equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied vehicle’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

Mercedes-Benz Citan leasing questions

Is Citan related to Renault Kangoo?

Yes. Renault Group confirms the platform and production relationship. That does not make their UK specifications interchangeable. Compare body length, powertrain, payload, equipment, warranty terms and local support for the exact vehicles being offered.

How long is the Citan load bay?

The January 2026 UK panel-van brochure quotes 1,806 mm for L1 and 2,170 mm for L2. Check the actual partition and fittings, and measure the door opening as well as the inside bay before accepting a large item will fit.

Does eCitan carry as much as the diesel?

Do not assume so. The cited UK tables give 680 kg for the diesel 110 L1 BASE manual and 448 kg for eCitan L1 BASE. These are named benchmark rows with source weight assumptions, not a universal difference across the range.

What battery does eCitan use?

The September 2025 UK document lists a 45 kWh battery and 90 kW motor. Confirm the supplied model year and battery specification, including how gross and usable capacity are stated, before matching this to an IVF catalogue entry.

What range does eCitan offer?

The cited UK brochure gives combined WLTP benchmarks of 176 miles for L1 BASE and 167 miles for L2 BASE. Other versions vary. Actual working range depends on load, temperature, speed and auxiliary use, so test the route with reserve.

How quickly can eCitan charge?

The cited UK document gives up to 75 kW DC and a 10-80% benchmark of 38 minutes. The vehicle, charger and battery conditions must support that session. Allow for site access and connection time as well as energy transfer.

Can I choose a Citan crew van?

The observed IVF catalogue includes crew descriptions. Confirm the number of approved seats, partition position and remaining load space for the actual vehicle. A crew body cannot be assessed using the full panel-van cargo dimensions.

Should I choose L2 instead of L1?

Use the longest regular load and the fully equipped payload calculation. L2 provides a longer named panel bay, but assess parking, access and handling at the sites you visit. Additional space is valuable when it solves a real working constraint.

Can shelving be installed in a leased Citan?

Seek funder permission and confirm the approved fixing method, weight and warranty implications. Agree whether the shelving stays in place or must be removed at return. Its weight must be included before calculating the remaining load allowance.

What information helps IVF quote a Citan?

Provide body and seating needs, normal cargo weight, essential equipment, mileage, term and charging arrangements if electric. State the initial-rental and maintenance basis so written quotations can be compared consistently.
