MINI is easiest to shortlist when you decide who uses the back seats before choosing a familiar badge. A compact Cooper, a five-door electric Aceman and the larger Countryman do not provide the same access routine. Someone carrying colleagues or children every day has a different starting point from a driver who mainly travels alone and values a small footprint.
The Cooper family itself needs a body decision. Petrol three-door, petrol five-door, electric three-door and Convertible enquiries should be stated explicitly. Do not let an appealing equipment pack distract from a door or roof arrangement that makes daily use awkward. Try the actual access with the people who will use the car.
MINI leasing also means untangling propulsion from styling. ALL4 concerns the driven wheels, and John Cooper Works can identify a distinct performance derivative. Sport equipment or a similar exterior treatment does not automatically supply the same mechanical specification. An adviser can make the comparison useful only when the full version is written down.
Use this comparison to separate the vehicle decisions before comparing agreements. Model pages can contain several generations or bodies; specify the one you want.
| Model page | Body and powertrain | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Aceman | Five-door electric crossover | Rear access, E/SE/performance and useful equipment. |
| Cooper | Petrol and electric; several door and roof arrangements | Identify three-door, five-door or Convertible first. |
| Countryman | Larger petrol or electric SUV | Passenger brief and whether ALL4 is needed. |
Electric Cooper suits the compact three-door task where charging is practical. The current UK electric body is 3,858 mm long. Aceman's current technical-page measurement is 4,079 mm, making it 221 mm longer. That is a useful parking comparison between those specific electric bodies; it must not be presented as the length difference for every petrol Cooper.
Aceman adds rear doors and a five-seat layout. MINI's scoped luggage figures are 300 litres with rear seats raised and 1,005 litres with them folded. The larger figure uses passenger space, so it cannot solve a requirement to carry five people and the same large load simultaneously. Check the opening, child-seat installation and foot space as well as the stated capacity.
Countryman opens the larger SUV comparison in petrol and electric forms. E and SE ALL4 are electric choices, while C, S ALL4 and petrol John Cooper Works have a different refuelling routine. An ALL4 badge does not establish whether the vehicle has an engine or a traction battery as its only energy source.
Within electric Cooper and Aceman, E, SE and performance descriptions need the battery and motor alongside them. Catalogue labels such as Cooper's 41/54 kWh identify entries to investigate, not a guarantee of usable energy or road range. Match the UK model year and equipment before assigning a technical figure.
An SME choosing MINIs for staff should assess the actual passenger duty. A three-door car can be appropriate for a single regular driver but inconvenient for a shared vehicle carrying visitors. Aceman's rear doors or Countryman's different cabin may be more useful than a performance badge for that role.
A company-provided electric MINI has a different benefit calculation from a petrol Cooper or Countryman. Keep the exact P11D, options and private availability in the tax brief. A business should also decide who is responsible for charging access and reimbursement before assuming the driver's electric routine will work.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.
For a personal MINI lease, consider how your priorities might change during the term. The Convertible needs its own luggage and rear-access trial. A driver attracted to a small Cooper may still prefer Aceman after trying a regular passenger through the rear doors. Countryman deserves assessment when the cabin task genuinely needs the larger body.
Compare the whole hire commitment with the running costs for your selected wheels and powertrain. A private customer does not receive the employee BiK percentage as a discount. If another member of the household will drive, check seating adjustment, visibility and charging confidence for both people before settling the derivative.
MINI’s familiar badges can span petrol and electric cars. The company-car percentage follows the actual powertrain and certified CO2, while options influence the P11D. Review the full tax-year sequence rather than assuming an electric starting percentage lasts unchanged.
For private availability to an employee or director, multiply the actual P11D value by the applicable percentage to establish the annual benefit before adjustments; the driver’s income tax rate then determines personal tax. This is distinct from the business’s rental and from a sole trader’s own motoring treatment.
The retained examples are dated catalogue illustrations from 10 September 2026, not current vehicle quotations. They assume a full year, 40% income tax and no employee contributions or other adjustments. Different vehicles illustrate the formula, not a like-for-like saving.
| Listed derivative | P11D | Tax basis | BiK | Tax at 40% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cooper 1.5 C Classic three-door automatic | £24,870 | 134 g/km | 32% | £3,183.36 |
| Cooper E Classic 135kW 41kWh | £26,840 | Zero-emission electric | 4% | £429.44 |
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-emission MINI | 4% | 5% | 7% | 9% |
| Petrol MINI, certified 130-134 g/km | 32% | 32% | 33% | 34% |
These are conditional tax bands, not assigned rates for every MINI. Confirm the supplied car’s P11D, certified CO2, fuel type and registration date. Diesel supplements can apply where the required emissions certification is absent, subject to the annual maximum.
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 27 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.
Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is £440 a year in 2026/27 for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.
Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.
For an electric MINI, start with the parking place used most nights. Check access to a suitable charger, cable routing and a practical alternative if that space is unavailable. Public charging can form part of the plan, but use the locations and tariffs you actually expect to encounter rather than a single assumed electricity price.
Battery choice should follow journeys, not a belief that the largest label is automatically necessary. Compare the longest regular trip, the opportunity to replenish at either end and a reserve for colder conditions. A manufacturer's quoted WLTP result is a controlled comparison; speed, temperature, load, wheel package and battery condition affect road use.
Petrol Cooper and Countryman need a fuel calculation based on the actual engine and gearbox. A John Cooper Works derivative can also change the tyre and insurance brief. Keep those costs beside the agreement, so a styling-led decision does not conceal a different pattern of upkeep.
When comparing charging information for Cooper, Aceman and Countryman, use the same measurement window. A peak power figure alone does not describe a complete stop, and an E benchmark should not automatically be transferred to SE or a performance version. Confirm supplied cables and the home's electrical installation independently of the car order.
MINI's UK new-car warranty runs for three years with unlimited mileage, subject to its terms and starting from first registration. Unlimited mileage within that period is not unlimited time. A four-year agreement needs a plan for its later period, especially when the vehicle was registered before handover.
Fully electric MINI high-voltage batteries have separate protection for specified defects and excessive capacity loss, up to eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. That limit and the policy's capacity conditions must be read together. It does not imply that every reduction in displayed range is a covered defect or that the whole vehicle has eight-year cover.
Ask what optional maintenance adds for scheduled servicing and tyres. Check provider, approval process and exclusions, particularly for a performance derivative or larger wheel package. Warranty against defects, maintenance and the funder's return-condition standard are three different obligations; having one does not remove the others.
Try Cooper's rear-seat access rather than judging it from a photograph of the cabin. If you regularly carry a child seat, test the installation and the movement needed to place a child inside. If adults usually sit behind the driver, set the front seat first. These checks can settle the body before you compare power or colour.
Aceman's 300-litre seats-up boot gives a concrete reference, but the floor shape and loading lip still determine what fits. Folding the rear seats creates a different use case. Bring the item that causes the problem, such as a folded pushchair or sports equipment, and establish which passenger places must remain available.
For Countryman, resolve whether all-wheel drive or towing capability is required. The presence of ALL4 is not a complete towing specification. Approved weights and the fitted towbar must match the car, and the petrol and electric variants need separate documentation.
MINI Level packs and Sport descriptions should be compared by their contents. If heated seats, a particular parking system or a roof option is essential, list it individually. Pack contents can vary by year; do not use another car's marketing image as proof. Similarly, request the engine or motor specification when a John Cooper Works name is involved, so equipment styling and performance hardware remain clear.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

Start with the driver and passenger duty. Cooper can suit compact individual use, while Aceman’s rear doors or Countryman’s cabin may suit regular passengers. Decide petrol versus electric separately, then assess private availability and the exact tax specification.
The quotations need the same body, propulsion, equipment level, model year and contract assumptions. Cooper door arrangements and Countryman ALL4 powertrains cannot be inferred from the badge alone. List essential features before comparing mileage, maintenance and the hire commitment.
No. Cooper covers different petrol and electric body choices. An electric three-door, petrol five-door and Convertible are distinct enquiries. Ask the adviser to state the complete body and propulsion description on the quotation.
Aceman offers five-door access and five seats in a different electric body. The current UK technical lengths are 4,079 mm for Aceman and 3,858 mm for electric Cooper. Assess rear access and parking space before deciding whether the additional body length is useful.
No. The published 1,005-litre folded-seat capacity uses rear passenger space. Its stated seats-up boot is 300 litres. Choose the loading arrangement around the passengers travelling at the same time, using the matching supplied body.
No. ALL4 identifies all-wheel drive. Petrol S ALL4 and electric SE ALL4 have different energy routines and tax treatment. The complete derivative and fuel type resolve the distinction.
A Sport equipment treatment does not by itself establish a John Cooper Works performance derivative. Compare the actual engine or motor, wheels and fitted features. Similar styling is not proof of matching mechanical specification.
Only if the manufacturer evidence explicitly covers that exact version. Battery, motor, wheels and model year can differ. Catalogue capacity labels do not establish usable capacity, and neither a laboratory range nor a charging headline is a promise for every journey.
The standard vehicle warranty has a three-year time limit from first registration. A longer lease can run beyond it. Electric-battery coverage is separate and has its own time, mileage and capacity conditions. Check any additional cover before committing.
It should identify scheduled servicing, tyre provision, exclusions and the period covered. Confirm the treatment of the chosen wheel and performance specification. Insurance, energy and charges for excess mileage or condition at return remain separate contractual questions.
