Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps business and private drivers compare Nissan Leaf leasing with generation and battery made explicit. Nissan’s new third-generation UK Leaf is electric, with 52 and 75 kWh choices. IVF also retains older 39 kWh entries. Match the actual car before applying range, charging or equipment figures.
A Leaf enquiry should now open with a simple clarification: which generation is being quoted? Nissan UK identifies the current car as the third generation and confirms it is on sale in its July 2026 press material. The new UK specification covers 52 and 75 kWh versions. IVF’s route nevertheless retains older 39 kWh entries, so a shared name cannot safely carry one set of technical claims.
The new model can be assessed for a mixed working week, with commuting, client visits and passenger journeys considered together. A business needs to know where its driver will charge and what the longest ordinary day looks like. A private customer should include regular family travel as well as local mileage. The right Leaf is the car that meets that routine with a workable charging margin.
| Route | Reason to shortlist | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Nissan Leaf | A new-generation electric car for a mixed commuting and family-travel brief | Separate new 52/75 kWh cars from retained 39 kWh catalogue entries. |
| Nissan Micra | A compact electric hatchback when a smaller car meets the requirement | Its 40/52 kWh choices have their own cabin, range and charging specifications. |
| Nissan Ariya | An alternative Nissan electric crossover enquiry | Try the particular body and specification; do not treat a shared badge as equivalent equipment. |
The same nominal battery label on two models does not establish the same usable capacity, efficiency, range or charging curve. Compare the complete car.
The IVF capture shows ten rows. New-generation descriptions include 160 kW Engage, Engage+, Advance and Evolve with 75 kWh, and 130 kW Engage and Advance with 52 kWh. Older 110 kW Shiro, Acenta, N-Connecta and Tekna 39 kWh entries remain visible. Catalogue presence establishes what the page describes, not what can currently be supplied.
Ask the quotation to state generation, model year, battery, grade and registration status. Do not apply the new car’s CCS2 figures or its range references to the 39 kWh entries. If an older entry is the subject of an enquiry, it needs its own technical and availability verification before any recommendation. This page does not treat that retained catalogue branch as a promise of new stock.
For the new car, separate the battery choice from the equipment decision. Engage and Evolve are not merely different battery labels. Compare essential features on the current UK grade matrix and make any required option explicit. A panoramic roof, particular display or assistance function shown in promotional material should not be assumed on the offered version.
Nissan’s new UK brochure gives Engage WLTP combined benchmarks of up to 280 miles for the 52 kWh branch and 387 miles for 75 kWh. These require the exact matching model year, grade, wheels and equipment. They are not older-Leaf figures, nor certain distances in motorway traffic or cold weather. Use a reserve that reflects your journey and the alternative charging sites available.
The same document specifies peak CCS2 DC capability of 105 kW for 52 kWh and 150 kW for 75 kWh. Confirm those details for the supplied new-generation derivative. The peak alone does not determine stop duration: charger capability, temperature, starting charge and the battery’s charging curve matter. Comparing battery size without those practical conditions can make a route look easier than it will be.
Plan around the places you already park for a useful length of time. If most energy would come from rapid charging, assess access and tariffs on your usual routes. If home charging is possible, have the installation checked for the offered vehicle. Do not build a financial case around an optional or future energy-export service until its equipment, service availability and terms are confirmed.
The new UK document gives a 4,350 mm length and up to 437 litres of seats-up luggage capacity. Those are references for the new generation, with configuration and measurement basis to be checked. They do not prove that the same luggage will fit as in an earlier Leaf. Try the actual opening, loading height and seat-folding arrangement with the objects that make up your normal load.
For regular rear passengers, assess legroom and headroom after the front seats have been set correctly. Check how easily occupants can enter in your normal parking space. For a staff car shared between drivers, include adjustment, control familiarity and charging handover in the test. The Micra is worth considering if a compact hatchback meets the requirement, while the Ariya provides another Nissan electric crossover route when a different cabin layout is wanted.
Both a correctly identified new Leaf and an older electric Leaf are zero-emission cars, but that does not make their taxable values, registration-related VED position or lease terms identical. The company-car percentage path is separate from the generation and supply checks.
For private availability to an employee or director, use the actual supplied Leaf’s P11D value and the appropriate percentage for each tax year. Apply the individual’s income-tax position afterwards. A battery upgrade or grade change can affect the taxable value even though the zero-emission percentage remains the same.
An agreement crossing several years should be assessed using the entire sequence below. Registration date is particularly important when comparing retained older entries with a new car because road-tax rules can differ. Confirm the funder’s tax provisions and ask the accountant to keep personal benefit, business rental treatment and charging reimbursement separate.
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-emission electric car | 4% | 5% | 7% | 9% |
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 24 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.
Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is currently £440 a year for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.
Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
Businesses using the VAT Flat Rate Scheme do not normally recover input VAT on recurring car hire. The separate capital-goods exception does not turn hire invoices into a vehicle purchase. Check HMRC’s Flat Rate Scheme guidance.
A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
Use Nissan leasing range, new electric Nissan Micra, Nissan Ariya leasing, company-car BiK guidance, discuss a Leaf quotation to narrow your choice or discuss a quotation.
Nissan UK identifies the current model as the third-generation electric Leaf and confirms it is on sale in July 2026 press material. The current UK specification has 52 and 75 kWh branches. Confirm the actual offered car because IVF’s route also retains older 39 kWh descriptions.
Yes. Give IVF the generation and battery you want, annual mileage, equipment needs and the driver’s charging arrangements. Funding remains subject to status, funder criteria and actual vehicle supply. Company-car assessment should use the supplied Leaf’s P11D value rather than a general model headline.
Identify the exact model first, then test passenger space, luggage access and charging compatibility. Compare the full contract on consistent term, mileage, initial rental and maintenance assumptions. A familiar Leaf badge does not establish that the offered car has the same technology as a previous one.
The captured catalogue retains Shiro, Acenta, N-Connecta and Tekna 39 kWh descriptions alongside new-generation entries. That does not confirm current new-vehicle supply. Those cars require their own availability and technical checks, and must not be given the new model’s range, dimensions or charging specification.
Nissan quotes up to 280 miles WLTP combined for new 52 kWh Engage and 387 miles for 75 kWh Engage. Match generation, model year, grade, wheels and equipment to the quotation. Actual range varies with weather, speed, load and starting charge; neither figure applies to older 39 kWh entries.
The current UK brochure identifies CCS2, with peak DC ratings of 105 kW for 52 kWh and 150 kW for 75 kWh. Confirm the supplied new-generation specification. These are not sustained rates or figures for older Leafs, and real charging depends on the charger, battery temperature and starting charge.
No equivalence should be assumed from the battery label. They are different cars with separate manufacturer figures, equipment and charging behaviour. Compare each exact derivative against your journeys and passenger needs. A similar nominal capacity does not establish identical efficiency or usable range.
The UK brochure gives up to 437 litres with seats up for the new generation, subject to its configuration and measurement basis. Try your actual items and occupied seats together. Do not transfer that number to an older Leaf or treat it as proof that a particular bulky item fits.
No. The zero-emission appropriate percentage is 4% in 2026/27, 5% in 2027/28, 7% in 2028/29 and 9% in 2029/30. The personal result depends on taxable value and circumstances. Review every year with an accountant and check registration-related road-tax costs separately.
Check the exact car, compatible hardware, service availability and contract terms first. A manufacturer reference to a capability does not establish that your home installation or electricity provider supports it. Do not assume an income or saving from energy export when assessing the lease quotation.
