Polestar’s numbers are not a ladder of passenger capacity. The 2 is the shorter fastback, the 3 is the taller SUV, the established 4 has a lower coupe profile, and the 5 answers a grand-touring brief. Start with the people and luggage that must fit, then compare the proposed version’s battery and equipment. That prevents a performance upgrade from displacing a practical requirement.
For a company director, a common electric BiK percentage does not make the models equally costly as company benefits. For a private driver, the battery and body should work with the home parking space and actual charging locations. IVF’s role is to keep those choices visible in the written lease comparison. The exact car, contract and supply position need confirmation together, especially where catalogue descriptions span a hardware change.
IVF provides a named specialist and free UK delivery, with the date confirmed for the chosen vehicle. Enquiries and quotations carry no charge or obligation. Ask about suitable two-, three- or four-year terms; the available agreement depends on the car and funder.
| Model line | Body and powertrain | What to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Polestar 2 | Electric fastback | Compact footprint; compare Single and Dual Motor on the matching battery. |
| Polestar 3 | Five-seat electric SUV | Choose generation first, then motor and approved towing equipment. |
| Polestar 4 coupe | Lower electric SUV coupe | Try the camera mirror and optional rear-seat equipment. |
| Polestar 4 SUV | Distinct electric SUV body | Physical rear window; confirm this body’s IVF supply separately. |
| Polestar 5 | Electric performance GT | Four main seats plus occasional centre place; check garage length. |
Model pages are catalogue routes, not confirmation of stock or a delivery date. Where a line has left the current UK range, the status is stated in its row. Confirm the exact UK generation, equipment and supply in your quotation.
The 2 is 154 mm narrower across extended mirrors than the 4 coupe. The 4 coupe is 60 mm shorter than the 3, 19 mm wider across the mirrors and at least 80 mm lower: the current coupe height is 1,534 mm against 1,614-1,622 mm for the 3 depending on specification. Measure the garage entrance as well as its length. A higher model number does not establish the easier car to park.
For towing, current 3 Rear Motor has a 1,500 kg braked limit; Dual Motor and Performance increase that to 2,200 kg with the appropriate optional towbar and vehicle limits. Do not infer the same approval for every older listed car. The 5’s 4+1 layout makes its middle rear place an occasional seat rather than an equivalent fifth adult position. Its 5,087 mm length also makes it a different driveway proposition from the 2. Keep these physical constraints fixed while comparing motors or optional packs.
On the current 82 kWh Polestar 2, the UK manufacturer comparison gives up to 409 miles WLTP for Long Range Single Motor and 370 miles for Long Range Dual Motor. Earlier 69 kWh and current 70 kWh Standard Range cars are different specifications. These figures are current 82 kWh benchmarks, not a promise for every listed pack, wheel or model year; real journeys vary.
The upgraded 3 reverses the simple assumption that one motor always maximises range: its 106 kWh Dual Motor has a 402-mile WLTP target, against 374 miles for 92 kWh Rear Motor. Neither target describes the earlier 111 kWh generation. For the 5, the 112 kWh Dual Motor and Performance targets are 421 and 346 miles, with respective 0-60 mph figures of 3.8 and 3.1 seconds. Performance trades 75 target miles for 0.7 seconds in that manufacturer comparison. Confirm final Launch Edition wheels and equipment before assigning those targets to a quotation.
An SME comparing Polestar company cars should separate company expenditure from the driver’s personal benefit. The same electric BiK percentage acts on different P11D values, so moving from a 2 to a 3 or 5 changes the calculation even before insurance or maintenance is considered.
A three-year agreement starting in September 2026 reaches part of the 2029/30 tax year. Use all the relevant percentages below. For business journeys, confirm the driver’s charging access and reimbursement arrangements separately from the lease. The business guide also contains IVF’s published director electric-car example; a genuine case helps explain the process but does not establish identical outcomes for a new applicant.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
Businesses using the VAT Flat Rate Scheme do not normally recover input VAT on recurring car hire. The separate capital-goods exception does not turn hire invoices into a vehicle purchase. Check HMRC’s Flat Rate Scheme guidance.
A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
The 4 coupe removes the conventional rear window and uses a roof camera feeding its digital mirror. The mirror can also show the rear occupants in its conventional mode. Try the system yourself before choosing a car around its appearance. The new 4 SUV has rear glass, so the two bodies should not share a blanket rear-visibility description.
A current 4 coupe has 526 litres of rear luggage space including the underfloor area, increasing to 1,536 litres with seats folded. The 2 has 407 litres including its underfloor compartment. Compare the actual opening and regular bags rather than treating the difference as guaranteed usable space for your load. For rear passengers in the 4 coupe, electrically reclining backrests depend on the optional Plus pack. PCH places these choices within your household agreement; insurance, charging and maintenance remain part of the decision beyond the rental.
Polestar’s electric models follow the same percentage path, but each car’s P11D changes the taxable benefit. Company expenditure and the driver’s income tax are separate.
For an employee or director with private use, the taxable benefit normally starts with the car’s P11D value multiplied by the applicable BiK percentage. Personal tax then depends on the individual’s income tax rate and any relevant adjustments. The percentage is not the tax rate applied to the lease rental. A sole trader’s own business car use follows different rules.
The agreement can cross several tax years. Compare the whole path, not just the percentage in the year the car arrives.
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-emission electric car | 4% | 5% | 7% | 9% |
Retained catalogue tax illustrations, rechecked 24 September 2026: a full tax year at 40% income tax, with no employee contributions or other adjustments. These are personal-tax calculations, not lease payments or equivalent-car savings. Scottish rates, tax-band crossings and Personal Allowance withdrawal can change the result.
| Listed derivative | P11D tax value | Certified basis / BiK | Annual driver tax at 40% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polestar 2 220kW 82kWh Long Range Single Motor Prime | £49,145 | 0 g/km; 4% | £786.32 |
| Polestar 3 245kW 92kWh Rear Motor | £69,925 | 0 g/km; 4% | £1,118.80 |
| Polestar 4 200kW 100kWh Rear Motor Business | £56,685 | 0 g/km; 4% | £906.96 |
| Polestar 5 550kW 112kWh Long Range DM Launch Edition | £89,435 | 0 g/km; 4% | £1,430.96 |
For the illustrated Polestar 2, the annual taxable benefit is £1,965.80 and employer Class 1A National Insurance at 15% is £294.87. The matching employer amounts for the illustrated 3, 4 and 5 are £419.55, £340.11 and £536.61. At the assumed 40% driver tax, the illustrated 4 costs £120.64 more annually than the 2; this does not establish the overall cost of either car.
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 24 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.
Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is currently £440 a year for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.
Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.
For the upgraded Polestar 3, the 800-volt 92 and 106 kWh versions have a manufacturer 10-80% charging benchmark of 22 minutes on appropriate equipment in suitable conditions. That hardware is different from the earlier 111 kWh car. A 400-volt charger can also reduce the upgraded car’s charging capability, so the headline cannot be treated as every public stop.
The current 100 kWh Polestar 4 coupe benchmark is around 30 minutes for 10-80%; the 112 kWh Polestar 5 benchmark is 22 minutes on suitable equipment. These are scoped manufacturer comparisons, not verified times for every IVF Rear Motor, Long Range, pack or Launch Edition description. Check the actual battery, motors, wheels and model year. Battery temperature, starting charge and charger output affect results. Build a winter motorway plan with reserve rather than scheduling a trip at the outer limit of a WLTP range or target.
Current UK booklets give vehicle manufacturing-defect cover for three years or 60,000 miles, whichever is reached first. Separate high-voltage battery protection lasts eight years or 100,000 miles and includes capacity falling below 70% under the applicable terms. Battery protection does not extend the warranty on the rest of the vehicle and is not a promise of restoring it to a brand-new state.
A four-year agreement can therefore include a period outside standard vehicle cover; a high-mileage driver can reach the ceiling sooner. Match the warranty booklet to the supplied model year and establish when cover began. Demonstrator or company-car registration can affect that date. Maintenance remains separate: request servicing, tyres, exclusions and any MOT provision in writing. Polestar’s web and booklet servicing references are not identical for every generation, so follow the actual vehicle’s schedule and warnings rather than a universal interval taken from another model.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
Use business car leasing, personal contract hire, company-car tax guide, VAT on business leasing, request a callback, electric car leasing, Business Contract Hire, BMW leasing, Tesla leasing, Volvo leasing, Porsche leasing to narrow your choice or discuss a quotation.
Identify the body, model year, battery, motor and packs first, then compare the same term, mileage and maintenance. An earlier 111 kWh Polestar 3 and an upgraded 92 or 106 kWh car do not have interchangeable charging hardware, even where a catalogue name looks similar.
The established 4 coupe is shorter and lower, but wider across the extended mirrors. It measures 4,840 mm long and 2,139 mm wide, compared with 4,900 mm and 2,120 mm for the current 3. The new 4 SUV is a separate body and needs its own comparison.
No. The coupe uses a roof camera and digital rear-view mirror, while the newer 4 SUV has a physical rear window. Name the intended body and confirm IVF supply for it. A test drive is useful for deciding whether the coupe’s mirror suits you.
No. The answer changes by model, generation and battery. The upgraded Polestar 3 Dual Motor has a higher manufacturer range target than Rear Motor because the batteries differ. Do not transfer that relationship to Polestar 2 or apply current targets to older 111 kWh Polestar 3 listings.
No. The 22-minute 10-80% manufacturer benchmark concerns the newer 92/106 kWh 800-volt generation under suitable conditions. It does not describe earlier 111 kWh cars. Charger voltage and output, temperature and arrival charge also affect the actual stop.
Its manufacturer seating description is 4+1: four main places and an occasional centre rear seat. Try the cabin with your intended passengers before deciding. A grand-touring body is a different task from carrying five adults regularly in an SUV.
Current Rear Motor has a 1,500 kg braked towing limit, while Dual Motor and Performance can reach 2,200 kg with the correct optional towbar and vehicle approval. Match the supplied generation, load and licence requirements; a general model statement is not approval for every trailer.
Current UK vehicle cover is three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, so a four-year term can extend beyond it. Confirm the applicable booklet and commencement date. Separate battery protection and a maintenance package do not automatically extend the whole-vehicle warranty.
Yes, if dependable sites and their tariffs fit your routine. Check access near home and recurring destinations, plus alternatives when a charger is busy or unavailable. Choose the battery around those opportunities and allow for winter motorway use rather than relying on the maximum laboratory figure.
IVF arranges PCH and BCH subject to status and individual funder criteria. The company route requires its own tax assessment; personal leasing focuses on your household agreement and running costs. Both contract-hire routes end with return and no contractual purchase option.
