Compare these catalogue routes, then confirm the exact commercial body and current supply with IVF.
Toyota Professional is broader than a three-size panel-van range. Corolla Commercial is a compact car-derived goods vehicle; Proace City, Proace and Proace Max cover progressively larger van requirements. Hilux offers a pickup body, while Land Cruiser Commercial provides an enclosed two-seat commercial alternative. The body type is the first meaningful decision, before grade or powertrain.
Do not treat a familiar passenger-car name as proof of a catalogue mistake. Toyota sells genuine Corolla Commercial and Land Cruiser Commercial models in the UK. Equally, their existence does not turn every Corolla or Land Cruiser into a van. The quotation needs the commercial derivative, approved seating and body documentation, not simply a model-family name.
Start with the load’s shape, weight and exposure to weather. A compact commercial estate-style body may suit instruments or service equipment; a pallet or tall installation may require a panel van. An open pickup bed solves a different problem again. A useful shortlist can cross these categories, provided the physical and tax differences remain visible.
| Model line and role | Published load benchmark | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Corolla Commercial | UK media page: 1,326 litres cargo space; payload needs exact model-year confirmation | Genuine commercial conversion. Passenger Corolla figures are not a substitute. |
| Proace City | October 2024 brochure: 3.3/3.9 m³ standard; 3.8/4.4 m³ with Smart Cargo | Compact diesel/electric van; dated 1,000/800 kg payload benchmarks require current mapping. |
| Proace | Medium panel-van family; select length and bulkhead arrangement | Use the current derivative schedule for volume and payload rather than importing City or Max figures. |
| Proace Max | UK page payload bands: diesel 1,290-1,425 kg; electric 1,250-1,665 kg | Large panel or conversion requirement; gross weight and body must match the figure. |
| Hilux | Pickup: exact generation, powertrain and bed specification required | Separate diesel 48V and battery-electric specifications; double-cab tax needs review. |
| Land Cruiser Commercial | Current UK commercial model: two seats and diesel 48V powertrain | Enclosed commercial version, not a passenger SUV or a battery-electric van. |
Toyota’s current catalogue and older downloadable brochures do not always carry the same model-year labels. The City figures above are explicitly an October 2024 reference. Corolla Commercial payload figures also differ between UK documents, so no settled payload is asserted here. Resolve these details against the vehicle offered by the supplying source.
The six linked IVF routes all exist, but a live route establishes a catalogue destination, not an orderable vehicle. A route labelled Corolla needs to show the genuine Commercial derivative. The same discipline applies to Land Cruiser and to Hilux generations sharing a family name.
Corolla Commercial uses a petrol hybrid system; it should not be described as an electric van that is charged from the mains. Land Cruiser Commercial’s current diesel 48V system is also different from a battery-electric powertrain. Those distinctions affect energy planning and prevent the zero-emission van benefit rule being applied merely because the word hybrid appears.
Proace City, Proace and Proace Max have electric alternatives in the UK range. Hilux also requires a generation-specific comparison between diesel 48V and battery-electric versions. For each, verify the actual model year, body, battery where applicable and carrying allowance. A shared badge does not establish equivalent towing, payload or charging capability.
Corolla Commercial may be a useful starting point when equipment is compact and the driver makes frequent visits. Measure the opening and internal load shape, not just the total litre figure. A low cargo body can be appropriate for cases and tools while being unsuitable for freight that needs a tall rear aperture.
For Proace City, decide whether Smart Cargo is essential and how it affects seating during use. In Proace and Proace Max, floor layout, wheel arches and door access become increasingly important. List the racking and stock that stay aboard, then weigh a representative full working load. Do not assume spare cubic capacity means spare legal carrying capacity.
A Hilux pickup carries people in the cab and goods in a separate bed. Weather protection, secure storage and loading height are central to the decision. A cover or canopy changes the available space and weight, so include it in the completed specification. Do not borrow a diesel Hilux load or towing figure for the electric version.
Land Cruiser Commercial offers an enclosed two-seat alternative. Check the actual commercial conversion and the equipment that remains fitted, especially where a passenger specification appears in search results. For Proace Max conversions or any crew configuration, establish the approved body, finished weight and warranty responsibilities before treating it as equivalent to a standard panel van.
A Toyota business comparison should use the right vehicle category for each line. Corolla Commercial, a Proace panel van and a double-cab Hilux may all serve business work, but that does not make their VAT, employee-benefit or VED treatment identical. Have the accountant review the supplied documents alongside the intended use.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
For a vehicle treated as a commercial vehicle for VAT, a VAT-registered business can normally recover VAT attributable to taxable business use, subject to the ordinary input-tax rules. Private use needs appropriate treatment, and partial exemption or the Flat Rate Scheme can change recovery. There is no automatic full reclaim just because the invoice says van. Equally, the car-rental 50% block must not simply be copied onto a genuine commercial van.
Ask your accountant to distinguish VAT classification, employment-benefit classification and business deductions. They answer different questions. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance and the IVF VAT guide with the actual commercial-vehicle documents; car examples are not van rules.
If the vehicle will be privately contracted, tell IVF before comparing business figures. Personal availability for a commercial derivative depends on the funding route and supplied vehicle. Clarify work use, private journeys, passengers and towing with the insurer, and compare the total on the appropriate VAT basis.
An employee choosing between a personally leased vehicle and an employer-provided Hilux needs more than a rental comparison. The employer arrangement can create company-car treatment under current double-cab rules. A sole trader’s deductions are a different question again, so explain the contracting party as well as the vehicle’s purpose.
For Hilux double-cab pickups, HMRC’s employment-tax approach changed from 6 April 2025, with most such vehicles treated as cars according to their construction and suitability. Qualifying pre-change purchases, leases or orders may retain transitional treatment until the earliest relevant disposal, lease expiry or 5 April 2029. A new lease should not assume that relief applies.
VAT retains a separate commercial-vehicle assessment, including the one-tonne test for double-cab pickups and the effect of accessories. Battery-electric Hilux specifications must be checked on their own facts. Review HMRC’s double-cab guidance and its VAT classification guidance before estimating recovery or benefits.
For 2026/27, the standard taxable benefit for a qualifying company van available for unrestricted private use is £4,170. That is the benefit value, not the employee’s tax bill: personal tax depends on the individual’s tax rate and any permitted reductions. Employer-provided private fuel can create a separate £798 taxable benefit. These are tax amounts, not vehicle rentals.
Business journeys and ordinary commuting can fall within the restricted-private-use exemption where the conditions are met and any other private use is insignificant. A written use policy and evidence of how the vehicle is actually used matter. A sole trader using their own vehicle does not simply apply an employee benefit figure to themselves.
A qualifying zero-emission van has a £0 van benefit value under current rules. Do not substitute the electric company-car percentage for this van treatment. Conversely, an electric passenger vehicle or a pickup treated as a car does not obtain the van exemption simply because it appears in a commercial catalogue.
These van cash figures are checked for 2026/27 only. Do not hold them flat in a forecast for 2027/28, 2028/29 or 2029/30: check each year’s published rules. Where the supplied vehicle is a company car, the published zero-emission car percentages are 4%, 5%, 7% and 9% across those four years; the maximum car bands are 37%, 37%, 38% and 39%. The actual car’s CO2, fuel, P11D value and eligibility determine its band.
Check HMRC’s van benefit values, the private-use exemptions and our company-car tax guide. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change. Have your accountant confirm classification and the treatment of your agreement before ordering.
Vehicle Excise Duty. For most light goods vehicles registered from 1 March 2001 in the relevant tax class, the 2026/27 annual rate is £360. Exceptions exist, including specific older emissions classes and vehicles taxed differently. Electric vans are not universally exempt from VED. Confirm the vehicle’s registered tax class and who meets changes during the hire. Check GOV.UK’s light-goods rates.
Expensive Car Supplement. This is a car-tax supplement, not a surcharge automatically added to every high-value van or pickup. For relevant car-tax registrations in 2026/27, the additional annual charge is £440 for five years from the second tax payment, above the applicable original-list-price threshold: £40,000 for petrol/diesel or £50,000 for electric vehicles. Registration-date rules and transitional application matter. Employment-benefit classification does not by itself establish the VED class. Confirm the actual registered category and funder terms against GOV.UK’s vehicle tax tables.
Planned mileage charging. The government’s proposed electric Vehicle Excise Duty from April 2028 concerns electric and plug-in hybrid cars; vans are outside the stated scope. It is not a current charge on an electric van. A car-classified vehicle needs separate checking. Final legislation and the funder’s allocation of any future charge remain relevant: read the government response.
For an electric Proace model, establish where the van is parked and who can authorise a charging installation. Then map the available connection time around loading and shifts. For an electric Hilux, include any towing and the practical space needed to access a charger with the working setup attached.
Compare energy use over representative journeys with the real load aboard. Motorway speed, cold weather, heating and accessories can all change the result. Keep a reserve for disruption and include public charging only where suitable access and time are realistic. A published laboratory range is a comparison measure, not a promise that the van will finish every planned route without stopping.
Toyota’s UK warranty proposition combines an initial manufacturer warranty with eligibility for further service-activated cover, up to stated age and mileage limits. It should not be reduced to an unconditional ten-year warranty. Confirm the supplied commercial model’s terms, required servicing and any exclusions before relying on cover for the full contract.
Traction-battery protection, breakdown arrangements, routine maintenance and a converter’s warranty are separate topics. Ask which service location can maintain the chosen Toyota and any fitted body. A quotation should identify whether tyres and other wear items are included; manufacturer support does not automatically pay for every scheduled or operational cost.
Send IVF the full commercial model name, body, generation and powertrain. For Hilux, include the bed equipment and towing brief; for Corolla Commercial, identify the largest carried item; for Proace Max, provide the completed body and gross-weight requirement. This avoids comparing vehicles that share a badge but perform different work.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Intelligent Vehicle Finance checks the requirement against its panel of funders. A written proposal should identify the initial rental, subsequent rentals, contract length, mileage allowance, selected services and applicable fees. Assess equivalent vehicles and agreement terms together; a different body, weight class or maintenance package changes the comparison.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied vehicle’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
Group the candidates by what they must carry, then eliminate any that fail the access, seating or weight requirement. Review the remaining vehicles with the accountant before treating their business costs as equivalent. This is especially useful when the shortlist includes both a panel van and a double-cab pickup.
IVF can check the exact derivative and funding terms once that brief is clear. The final technical confirmation should resolve brochure age, commercial-body identity and any disputed weight figure before an order is considered.
van leasing, pickup truck leasing, medium vans, large panel vans, electric vans, VAT on business car and van leasing, request a callback.
Toyota sells a genuine Corolla Commercial in the UK, with a goods-focused conversion. It must be distinguished from the passenger Corolla. The IVF route reviewed lists a Commercial derivative, so the family name alone is not evidence of a misclassified passenger car.
Proace City is the compact line, Proace the medium van and Proace Max the larger body and conversion route. Choose using load dimensions, weight and access requirements. Each family has its own derivative and powertrain specifications.
No. Toyota’s UK commercial version is a two-seat vehicle with a goods area. Confirm that precise conversion and its documentation in the quotation. Passenger Land Cruiser seating and load figures should not be used to describe it.
No. Its UK hybrid powertrain is not a battery-electric van charged from the mains. The commercial model’s emissions and tax treatment should be checked on its own specification; the zero-emission van benefit does not follow simply from the word hybrid.
Use them as dated comparison information, not final confirmation for a newer model year. The October 2024 brochure in this evidence set predates current catalogue entries. Ask for the exact offered derivative’s dimensions and completed payload.
Do not assume that. Verify the battery-electric model’s payload, towing and operating-weight schedule independently. The same family name does not establish the same load capability or VAT classification.
Most double-cab pickups fall under company-car treatment for employment benefits following the April 2025 change, subject to the vehicle assessment and transitional rules. VAT is separate. Ask your accountant to review the actual Hilux and arrangement.
No. Toyota’s extended proposition depends on eligibility, servicing, age and mileage limits under its terms. Confirm the initial and service-activated cover for the supplied commercial model, plus separate battery and conversion conditions where relevant.
Ask IVF to check the specific derivative and funding route. A business catalogue entry does not guarantee personal availability. Explain private and work use, and compare the quotation on the correct VAT-inclusive basis.
Give the full commercial model, body, powertrain, load and passenger requirements. Add annual mileage, term, maintenance preference and any charging or towing needs. Identify whether the agreement is business or personal so the proposal is prepared appropriately.
Share the load and use pattern so IVF can check a specific vehicle, its documents and the agreement.
