Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps you compare Citroen Berlingo passenger-car leasing for family and business journeys. Choose the five-seat M or seven-seat XL layout, then assess petrol, diesel or electric suitability. Confirm the exact production specification and seating arrangement, particularly where a catalogue entry describes an older trim or a converted vehicle.
Passenger Berlingo is worth assessing when access and usable seating matter more than a conventional saloon or SUV shape. Count the colleagues or family members on the trip that matters, then test the layout with their cases and equipment. Maximum seats and maximum load volume cannot automatically be used together.
This is the passenger-car route. Its company-car benefit and road-tax framework must not be replaced with van rules because Berlingo also names a commercial vehicle. Specify the passenger version and obtain the supplied vehicle’s classification. If your actual requirement is tools and goods in a commercial load area, use the separate van route and have that vehicle assessed on its own terms.
Citroen Berlingo and two alternatives: match the car to your use
| Model | Consider it for | Resolve before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger Berlingo | A five-seat M or seven-seat XL passenger brief | Test luggage with the required seats occupied |
| Peugeot Rifter | Another passenger layout to compare | Verify its own current specification |
| Vauxhall Combo Life | A separate passenger-car alternative | Assess access and the supplied seating layout |
Citroen’s July 2026 UK passenger brochure identifies M with five seats and XL with seven. The XL includes a third row, so assess access to those seats, comfort for the people using them and the luggage space that remains behind. Do not choose an XL solely because it carries a higher seating number. If all seven places will regularly be occupied, take the bags used on that journey to a demonstration.
For a five-person family or crew, the M may answer a different parking and carrying requirement. Check clearance for the tailgate where you normally load, and try the sliding side doors beside another parked vehicle. With child seats, follow the approved fitting positions and each seat maker’s instructions. Rear-seat flexibility is useful only if the arrangement works with the occupants who actually travel together.
The current brochure separates petrol 110 manual, diesel 100 manual, diesel 130 automatic and electric 136hp powertrains. Their availability depends on body and grade. If an automatic gearbox is essential, establish the compatible version before comparing interior equipment. A diesel-labelled entry and an electric-labelled entry are not interchangeable ways of obtaining the same tax outcome or refuelling routine.
For the electric car, start with where it will charge during an ordinary week. Consider your longest regular journey with passengers aboard and a practical reserve, then assess reliable charging on occasional longer trips. For combustion versions, consider the driving pattern and any access restrictions on routes you actually use. No single powertrain can be chosen responsibly from the Berlingo name alone; the exact use and specification should lead the enquiry.
The manufacturer brochure for production from 1 July 2026 uses Collection and Max. IVF’s captured grid contains 20 entries, including Plus, Collection and Max as well as WAV descriptions. Those rows do not establish that every trim belongs to the same production specification. Ask which model year and equipment list apply to the offered vehicle, particularly when comparing an older Plus label with a current Collection.
A WAV suffix also needs its own discussion. It does not prove a particular wheelchair space, restraint system, ramp, seating capacity or conversion approval. Obtain the converter’s specification and test the arrangement with the intended user and equipment. Do not infer those details from an unconverted passenger brochure. The proposed agreement must identify the vehicle and conversion clearly, including any change to carrying capacity, maintenance responsibility and insurance requirements.
The current passenger brochure states a 52kWh battery and 100kW motor. Those figures identify the present electric specification; an older 50kWh brochure should not be used as its equipment reference. Battery capacity alone is not a journey guarantee. Temperature, speed, load and heating can change the distance available, so compare the exact car’s current test figures with your routine and allow a working margin.
Confirm the onboard charger fitted to the vehicle and the electricity supply available at home or work. A more capable public charger cannot make the car accept power beyond its own limit. If several drivers share the Berlingo, agree who plugs it in and how charging costs are recorded. This practical routine matters as much as finding a suitable connector on a map, particularly before an early departure with passengers.
For the passenger car, confirm M1 classification on the supplied vehicle’s documents. Older Berlingo material can describe different approval arrangements, including earlier combustion vehicles. That historical material should not be transferred to a current passenger-car quotation without checking the actual approval and registration record. A converted vehicle warrants particular care because its final configuration may differ from the base car.
For an employee or director with private use, the electric and combustion versions follow different company-car percentage paths. A diesel also needs the relevant emissions-standard evidence before deciding whether a supplement applies. Record the exact P11D and certified CO2 alongside the derivative. A business buying passenger transport should not plan around a van-benefit amount simply because the exterior resembles a commercial vehicle.
A Rifter comparison is useful when you are weighing another passenger vehicle with sliding-door access. Assess its own current grades and seating specification; related engineering does not make the equipment lists identical. The separate Berlingo van route is appropriate for a goods-carrying enquiry. It should not be used as a substitute for checking the passenger car’s rear accommodation and approval category.
Citroen’s service-activated extended cover has eligibility and servicing conditions. Confirm the basic warranty for the offered vehicle and read battery terms separately. Give IVF your seat count, journey pattern, gearbox and accessibility requirements so the quotation answers the complete passenger brief.
Passenger electric Berlingo follows the zero-emission company-car path. Combustion versions require their own certified CO2 and P11D. This conditional petrol example uses the current brochure’s 143g/km figure; it must not be applied to every listed vehicle.
For an employee or director with private use, the taxable benefit normally starts with the car’s P11D value multiplied by the applicable BiK percentage. Personal tax then depends on the individual’s income tax rate and any relevant adjustments. The percentage is not the tax rate applied to the lease rental. A sole trader’s own business car use follows different rules.
The agreement can cross several tax years. Compare the whole path, not just the percentage in the year the car arrives.
Company-car BiK benchmarks, 2026/27 to 2029/30
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-emission passenger electric car | 4% | 5% | 7% | 9% |
| Petrol passenger car certified at 140-144g/km | 34% | 34% | 35% | 36% |
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 28 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.
Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is £440 a year in 2026/27 for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.
Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. For Berlingo, the planned electric rate concerns the electric passenger version, not petrol or diesel. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
Use Citroen leasing, Peugeot Rifter leasing, Citroen Berlingo van leasing, business car leasing, Vauxhall Combo Life leasing to narrow your choice or discuss a quotation.
No. This route covers the passenger car and uses the car-benefit and car-VED framework. Use the separate Berlingo van route for a commercial load-area requirement and verify the supplied vehicle’s classification.
The UK brochure for production from 1 July 2026 lists five-seat M and seven-seat XL versions. Confirm the exact offered arrangement, particularly for a converted vehicle.
No. The current UK passenger brochure includes petrol, diesel and electric choices, with availability depending on body and trim. Check the engine and gearbox before selecting equipment.
The July 2026 brochure specifies 52kWh and a 100kW motor. Older 50kWh literature is not the equipment reference for this production specification.
The catalogue includes labels from different specifications. The current July 2026 brochure uses Collection and Max. Ask IVF to identify the production version and equipment list for any Plus quotation.
No. Obtain the specific conversion documents, approved seating and restraint details, then test the layout with the intended user and equipment. The standard passenger brochure cannot establish conversion suitability.
That depends on your luggage and the seating arrangement in use. Try the XL with every required seat occupied and the actual bags; maximum capacity figures can assume folded or removed seats.
Do not assume so. Confirm the car’s approval and registration documents and use the appropriate passenger-car treatment. Historical Berlingo category information should not be transferred automatically to a current quotation.
No. Service-activated cover has eligibility and servicing requirements. Obtain the terms for the offered vehicle and read electric battery cover separately from the general vehicle warranty.
State five or seven occupants, luggage, manual or automatic preference, charging access and any conversion requirements. That allows IVF to investigate a defined passenger vehicle and its relevant contract.
Bring your passenger, journey and equipment requirements. We can help turn them into a clear vehicle and contract brief.
