Your MG S5 leasing decision

Intelligent Vehicle Finance helps business and private drivers compare MG S5 leasing, marketed by MG as MGS5 EV. This electric SUV offers a choice of battery and equipment versions for everyday passenger use. Start with your charging routine and luggage requirements, then compare the precise SE or Trophy quotation.

MG S5 business lease: match the battery to your ordinary week

The MGS5 EV is worth considering when you want an electric SUV for the commute, passengers and the usual mix of household or work equipment. Its three-version UK range creates a useful choice between battery size and equipment, rather than a need to navigate many unrelated powertrains. Begin with where the vehicle will charge and the longest journey you regularly need it to cover. Then decide what additional equipment would make that routine easier.

A larger battery should have a reason in the brief. It may help a driver whose working days vary substantially or whose opportunities to charge are less frequent. Another driver with dependable overnight charging and a repeatable local pattern may prioritise equipment or cabin fit instead. Neither choice can be settled by the battery label alone. Consider the actual route and the amount of reserve you want to retain on a difficult day.

SE, SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range

The IVF capture matches MG's broad UK range structure: SE with a 49kWh battery label, SE Long Range with 64kWh, and Trophy Long Range with 64kWh. The catalogue identifies the smaller-battery SE as 125kW and the Long Range versions as 170kW. MG's UK page describes rear-wheel drive for all three. Request the precise model year and equipment schedule so a shortened quotation does not obscure the version being offered.

Compare SE Long Range with Trophy Long Range when the battery choice is already clear and you want to assess the equipment step. Compare the two SE versions when the main question is battery and journey flexibility. These are different decisions. Asking for three quotations without defining the reason for each can produce a confusing comparison, particularly if mileage, maintenance or agreement length also changes between them.

Equipment that earns its place in everyday use

MG lists features such as the surround-view camera, powered tailgate and wireless phone-charging provision within the Trophy equipment description. Confirm the offered model year's specification and try the features that matter. A powered tailgate may help someone who regularly loads bags while managing passengers; a parking camera may be useful in a restricted workplace bay. Their value should come from those tasks rather than the assumption that every extra feature is essential.

Pair your own phone, try the navigation and adjust the heating during a demonstration. For shared use, ask how profiles and connected services are managed. The useful equipment is the equipment that works for the actual drivers.

Passenger access and luggage with the rear seats occupied

Test the cabin with the usual occupants and the front seats set where they will actually be used. A raised body shape does not establish the ease of access for every person. Check the step in, the door opening and whether children can be secured without awkward reaching. Use the vehicle handbook and the child-seat instructions for any restraint combination rather than assuming the seating count confirms a fit.

Test luggage with the required seats occupied, including room for the charging cable. Check the adjustable boot floor and secure work equipment. A maximum folded-seat figure describes a different task.

Charging at home, work and on longer routes

A dependable place to charge is an operating requirement to resolve alongside the vehicle choice. Check the installation, parking access and cable reach at home or work. Where several employees share charging points, consider how the space is allocated and who moves the car when a session ends. The existence of a workplace charger is not the same as reliable access to it at the time you need it.

MG publishes range and charging benchmarks, but this page does not apply one maximum figure to all SE and Trophy entries. Ask for the data for the exact battery, wheels and model year on the proposed vehicle, including the charging conditions. On longer journeys, temperature, arrival charge and charger capability affect the stop. Plan around a practical route with an alternative location rather than treating peak charging power as the duration of the whole break.

MGS5, MGS6 or MG4: body style before badge progression

The MGS6 EV is the relevant MG SUV comparison when you want to test a different cabin and exterior footprint. Do that with the same passengers and luggage that you used to assess MGS5. A model number is not evidence that one vehicle automatically serves your needs better. If the larger or differently arranged vehicle solves a real problem, the comparison is useful; if it does not, the MGS5 brief may remain clearer.

The MG4 is the electric hatchback alternative. It is worth comparing when a raised SUV format is a preference rather than a requirement. Try the seating position, access and loading arrangement independently. A business choosing several staff cars may find that different roles call for different formats, even where the drivers share a charging location. The aim is a suitable vehicle for each duty, not a universal model chosen from a battery-capacity table.

Warranty and distance over the full agreement

MG's seven-year or 80,000-mile warranty is subject to whichever limit arrives first and to the warranty terms. A high-mileage company driver should calculate the expected distance at return, including any mileage already recorded at supply. The calendar duration can look generous while the distance limit is the more relevant constraint. Ask for the warranty documentation applying to the specific vehicle, including the battery and component provisions.

Confirm servicing and tyre requirements, maintenance exclusions and assistance arrangements separately. A manufacturer warranty covers eligible defects; it does not automatically pay routine wear, insurance or the cost of replacement transport.

MG S5 company-car tax across the lease

Every MGS5 EV version considered here is battery electric. For an employee or director with private use, use the zero-emission percentage and the actual P11D value, including relevant options. Changing from SE to Trophy can change the value used in the calculation even though the electric percentage follows the same path.

For an employee or director with private use, the taxable benefit normally starts with the car’s P11D value multiplied by the applicable BiK percentage. Personal tax then depends on the individual’s income tax rate and any relevant adjustments. The percentage is not the tax rate applied to the lease rental. A sole trader’s own business car use follows different rules.

The agreement can cross several tax years. Compare the whole path, not just the percentage in the year the car arrives.

Tax information checked 28 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.

Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is £440 a year in 2026/27 for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.

Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.

VAT and the business accounts

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.

A zero-emission car is not subject to the CO2-based lease-rental restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.

Build the quotation around the way you will use it

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

MG S5 leasing questions

Is MG S5 the same name as MGS5 EV?

MG markets the UK model as MGS5 EV, while IVF's route and catalogue use MGS5. This page covers that electric SUV. Ask for the full model and derivative description in your written quotation.

Which MGS5 EV batteries are listed?

The captured range has SE 49kWh, SE Long Range 64kWh and Trophy Long Range 64kWh. Match the battery and grade to the supplied model year, and request the corresponding official range and charging data.

Is the MGS5 EV rear-wheel drive?

MG's UK page describes rear-wheel drive for the three versions covered here. IVF lists 125kW for the 49kWh SE and 170kW for the 64kWh versions. Confirm the actual offered vehicle's specification.

Should I choose SE Long Range or Trophy Long Range?

Once the 64kWh battery is the right choice, compare the equipment you will use. Test the parking aids, loading convenience and cabin features on the offered specification rather than selecting a grade only from its position in the range.

Can I business lease an MGS5 EV?

IVF can assess business contract hire, subject to status and availability. Explain the driver's duties, mileage, charging and private use. Company-car tax uses P11D value and the applicable electric percentage, not the monthly rental.

Can I lease the MGS5 EV personally?

Personal Contract Hire is the private-driver route, subject to status and availability. Compare the battery and equipment against household journeys, then check the full agreement's mileage, maintenance and return conditions.

Is MGS6 automatically a better choice?

No model is automatically the right fit from its name. Compare MGS6 for a different SUV cabin and footprint, and test it with the same passengers and luggage. MGS5 may already answer your requirements.

Why compare MGS5 with MG4?

MG4 offers a hatchback alternative when the SUV format is optional. Test access, seating position and luggage arrangements on each. The useful comparison is the daily task, not simply which has the larger battery label.

What warranty does MG provide?

MG publishes seven years or 80,000 miles for MGS5 EV, whichever comes first and subject to terms. Check the supplied car's documents and component conditions. Warranty does not include every maintenance or wear cost.

How should I compare MG S5 lease prices?

Use the same grade, battery, term, mileage and maintenance basis when comparing grid prices and written quotes. Confirm applicable fees, tax provisions and the return process so the proposals describe the same commitment.
