Choose MG3 or MG4 for a compact hatchback, HS for petrol and hybrid family-SUV choices, and MGS5, MGS6 or IM6 for electric SUV use. MG5 is the electric estate, IM5 the lower saloon-style car and Cyberster the two-seat roadster. Body and passenger needs narrow this broad range quickly.
| Your requirement | Models to compare | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday hatchback | MG3 / MG4 / MG4 Urban | Separate petrol/full hybrid from electric and resolve the model generation. |
| SUV without external charging | ZS or HS | Hybrid+ is distinct from PHEV; check the exact fuel classification. |
| Electric SUV | MGS5, MGS6 or IM6 | Compare size, battery and drivetrain rather than similar names. |
| Plug-in SUV | HS PHEV / MGS9 PHEV | Establish seats, charging routine and certified tax inputs. |
Choose MG3 for a compact car without a charging point, selecting manual petrol or automatic Hybrid+ before trim. SE and Trophy then let you compare the features useful on everyday trips.
Petrol, Hybrid+ and an older electric version make ZS a small-SUV choice that starts with the powertrain. Keep the offered generation explicit so the body and energy routine remain those of the car you select.
Choose MG4 Urban for the separate front-wheel-drive electric hatchback. Comfort Standard Range is labelled 43 kWh, while Comfort/Premium Long Range use 54 kWh labels in IVF’s entries.
Choose MG4’s battery around your recurring journeys, or XPOWER for its distinct performance role. SE, Trophy and newer Premium equipment names span several specification sets, as explained below.
For the smaller electric-SUV brief, start with MGS5’s own luggage comparison below. IVF lists 49 kWh-labelled SE and 64 kWh Long Range SE/Trophy cars, so choose the route requirement before trim.
Choose MGS6 when its larger rear boot is useful for family travel. The listed 180 kW SE/Trophy and 266 kW Trophy Dual Motor share a 77 kWh label but answer different drivetrain needs.
Choose IM5 when a lower electric saloon-style body suits your passengers and luggage. Standard Range is labelled 75 kWh, while Long Range and Performance use 100 kWh labels; select the journey need before extra output.
An electric SUV cabin points to IM6, with Long Range and explicitly AWD Performance or Launch Edition versions to compare. The shared 100 kWh label does not replace the driven-wheel and equipment decision.
Choose MG5 when an electric estate’s load opening matters more than SUV height. The listed 61 kWh Long Range SE and Trophy remain a separate supply enquiry from the similarly named MGS5.
Choose Cyberster for open-top two-person electric use. Try the roof and luggage, then compare Trophy Single Motor with GT Dual Motor AWD, including tyres, insurance and the charging routine.
Front-wheel-drive electric hatchback use is MG4 Urban’s brief; MG4 supplies the separate battery and performance shortlist. IVF lists Urban with 43/54 kWh labels, while MG4 includes 49/64/77 kWh descriptions and a separate 320 kW XPOWER. Urban is not an equipment pack on the other car.
Choose a larger battery around a journey that needs it, and XPOWER around the distinct performance brief. Range and charging figures need the actual model route, battery, motors, wheels and year, rather than the shared MG4 lettering.
Choose HS petrol or Hybrid+ if the family SUV will not be plugged in. Choose HS PHEV when regular charging can supply useful everyday electric mileage. Both local charged trips and the longer journeys after stored energy is used belong in that comparison.
Seven seats are the reason to investigate MGS9 PHEV. It is a separate model from the five-seat electric SUVs, so test the actual third row and luggage arrangement alongside its plug-in routine.
Choose MGS5 for the smaller electric-SUV brief, or MGS6 when the rear luggage compartment is the reason to move up. MG’s UK specifications give MGS5 453 litres with the rear seats raised and MGS6 674 litres, a 221-litre difference before seats are folded. Keep the separately quoted front compartment out of that rear-boot comparison.
Choose IM6 for its own cabin and equipment, rather than assuming its higher output creates the space you need. These boot benchmarks concern the specified current UK MGS5 and MGS6 bodies; the offered storage arrangement and your actual bags still need to match.
Compact petrol or full-hybrid needs point to MG3; ZS is the SUV comparison with its generation named. The ZS catalogue combines petrol, Hybrid+ and older electric entries, so a current Hybrid+ description is not an update to every listed ZS EV.
Choose MG5 for an electric estate, IM5 for a lower electric touring body or Cyberster for open-top two-person use. IVF’s electric car leasing hub helps compare another body when the energy choice is settled, with older-model supply checked for the car you prefer.
Ask IVF to keep MG4 Urban separate from MG4, MG5 separate from MGS5, and each HS hybrid system explicit. We can then compare the cars that meet your passenger and charging brief, including whether MGS6’s larger rear boot is more useful than extra performance in another model.
Read IVF customer feedback on Feefo. Agreement guides: Business Contract Hire and Personal Contract Hire.
MG’s UK model and brand material states a seven-year or 80,000-mile vehicle warranty, whichever comes first, subject to terms. The UK IM6 brochure also states that headline. Obtain the actual policy for the supplied model, registration and use.
A long vehicle warranty does not mean every component has identical cover. Confirm high-voltage battery terms, capacity conditions, service requirements and any use-based limits separately. Do not transfer terms from an older MG5 or ZS document to a newer electric model without checking.
Scheduled maintenance, tyres, insurance and return obligations remain separate. Ask what optional maintenance includes and whether the proposed annual mileage could reach the warranty limit before the agreement ends.
These MG4 electric and HS Hybrid+ examples use different tax bases and different bodies. HS PHEV and MGS9 require their own certified plug-in assessment. The examples are not rental quotations or equivalent-car savings.
Personal-tax illustrations: a full year, 40% income tax and no employee contributions or other adjustments, using IVF’s 10 September 2026 MG entries. Neither lease rentals, employer costs nor equivalent-car savings.
| Listed derivative | P11D | Tax basis | BiK | Tax at 40% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mg4 170kW Premium Long Range 64kWh 5dr Auto | £29,930 | Zero-emission electric | 4% | £478.88 |
| Hs 1.5 T-GDI Hybrid+ SE 5dr Auto | £28,985 | 126 g/km | 31% | £3,594.14 |
The illustrated bands are Zero-emission electric: 4% in 2026/27; Petrol/hybrid, 125–129 g/km: 31% in 2026/27. Confirm P11D, certified CO2/range and transitional treatment with your accountant. Read the general company-car BiK rules. MG’s electric models use zero-emission treatment; MG3, ZS and HS petrol or Hybrid+ do not, and HS PHEV and MGS9 need certified plug-in inputs.

| Cost and timing | Application to this shortlist | Rule to check |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), 2026/27 | Electric MGs versus petrol, Hybrid+ and PHEV entries | Year one: £10 for zero-emission cars; petrol/hybrid rates follow registered CO2, without the former hybrid discount. Thereafter: £200 annually before supplements. |
| Expensive Car Supplement (ECS) | HS PHEV and MGS9 retain the non-EV threshold. | £440 annually for five years from the second licence. Thresholds: more than £40,000 petrol/hybrid; more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. |
| Planned eVED, April 2028 | MG electric cars and HS/MGS9 plug-ins differ. | Additional to VED: 3p per mile electric; 1.5p per mile plug-in hybrid. Not a current charge; final legislation and implementation remain relevant. |
Ask your accountant about 50% rental-VAT recovery with private availability, depending on circumstances; the 15% hire-cost restriction above 50 g/km; and FRS 102 lease recognition for periods from 1 January 2026.
Compare MG4 with CUPRA Born on the actual battery generation, rear access and equipment.
Compare HS PHEV with Geely Starray EM-i, or MGS5 with Skoda Elroq. Keep plug-in and battery-electric comparisons separate.
Settle the practical details before choosing your car and contract.
No. MG4 Urban has its own model route and front-wheel-drive layout in MG’s UK range. Compare the full model name, battery, driven wheels and equipment, not only an MG4 or Long Range label. The other MG4 route includes separate generations and the XPOWER performance version; confirm the supplied UK derivative before applying range or charging figures.
MG’s UK MGS6 specification gives 674 litres of rear boot space with seats up and 1,910 litres with rear seats folded. That does not make it a seven-seat car. If seven people must travel, investigate the separately listed MGS9 PHEV and confirm its fitted layout. For MGS6, match the supplied UK storage arrangement and test the actual load; folded capacity is not available while keeping the rear passengers.
No. The ZS catalogue includes petrol, Hybrid+ and electric entries from different specifications. Match the supplied generation before using current model equipment, range or charging claims.
MG describes MGS9 PHEV as a seven-seat SUV. Confirm the actual supplied UK layout and assess luggage and access with the intended seats occupied.
MG5 estate entries appear in the catalogue. Ask IVF to confirm current allocation, model year and exact specification. A listed route does not establish factory-order availability.
The labels differ: MGS5 has 49kWh or 64kWh, MGS6 has 77kWh and IM6 has 100kWh entries. Match technical figures to the exact supplied derivative and capacity convention.
No. The seven-year or 80,000-mile vehicle headline is subject to its policy. Scheduled servicing, tyres and lease-return obligations are separate, and battery or component terms require their own check.
HS Hybrid+ needs no external charging. HS PHEV is worth investigating if dependable workplace or public charging can cover your regular routine even without a home charger. Compare the actual charging access, petrol use, servicing and certified tax position before choosing. If regular charging is impractical, put Hybrid+ and petrol HS first in the same-body comparison.
Require the exact MG4 or MG4 Urban route, HS hybrid type or IM model specification when confirming supply. Compare the full hire commitment, including early termination and end-of-contract charges.
