Read the whole van offer before comparing it

A van offer is useful only when the vehicle can do your work and the agreement fits your mileage and cash flow. For sole traders, SME directors and small fleets, start with the body and usable payload, then compare the full payment schedule. Private customers need the VAT-inclusive cost and confirmation of personal contract hire availability.

  • Exact body and payload
  • VAT basis matters
  • Full payment schedule

The details to check on a van quotation
Offer detailWhat to establish before you decide
VAT basisAn ex VAT figure excludes VAT. Ask for the amount you will actually pay, including VAT where applicable. VAT registration does not automatically make every cost recoverable.
Initial and regular rentalsRead the initial rental, the number of subsequent payments and their timing together. A larger initial rental can make the regular payment look lower. It is an advance lease payment, not a refundable security deposit.
Term and annual mileageCompare quotes using the same duration and mileage. Check the excess-mileage charge and what happens if your use changes or you need to end the agreement early.
Vehicle and bodyMatch the exact derivative, powertrain, wheelbase, roof height and body conversion. A model name alone does not establish carrying capacity.
Maintenance and feesAsk whether maintenance is included or separate, what it covers, and the administration fee including its VAT basis and when it is payable. Do not assume a figure on the card includes every charge.
Other running and return costsBudget for energy, insurance and any charges outside the agreement. Read the return-condition standard, damage assessment process and early-termination terms.

Ask for a written total of the scheduled lease payments and known mandatory fees, with the assumptions shown. Keep possible mileage, damage and early-termination charges separate because they depend on what happens during the agreement. A monthly figure on its own cannot show the total cost.

Choose the working vehicle before the offer

  • Load space: measure the longest item, the space between wheelarches, door openings and loading height. Roof height also affects access to car parks and sites.
  • Payload: check the plated gross and axle weights and the usable payload of the exact finished van. People, tools, racking, tow equipment and conversions all use carrying capacity. Confirm the calculation before ordering.
  • Drivers and licensing: check each driver’s entitlement against the vehicle and any trailer. Do not assume a car licence covers every large van or minibus. Category B minibus exceptions have conditions; passenger operations may require D1 entitlement or other permissions. Check minibus licence rules.
  • Heavier operations: goods-vehicle operator licensing is generally relevant above 3.5 tonnes; some international hire-or-reward work has a lower threshold. Check the vehicle, trailer and operation against GOV.UK operator licensing guidance.
  • Electric use: map a loaded working day, charging access and winter routes. Check the battery, body and payload of the listed derivative. Official range is not a promise of distance with your load; no generic range or charging-time figure applies to all vans.

VAT and van tax: keep the classifications separate

For 2026/27, the standard taxable van benefit is £4,170 where a charge arises, with a separate £798 van fuel benefit where applicable. These are taxable benefit values, not the amount of income tax you pay. Restricted private use can qualify for exemption; a zero-emission van has a nil van benefit value under the current rules. Ask your accountant to check your use, employee arrangements and VAT recovery. Do not carry the 2026/27 amounts forward into later lease years without checking the new rates.

Many double-cab pickups acquired under the rules applying from 6 April 2025 are treated as cars for employee benefit purposes; transitional protection can apply to earlier commitments. VAT and Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) classifications are separate. A pickup shown in a van grid does not establish van tax treatment.

For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment for the TC39 light-goods class is £360, including zero-emission vehicles in that class. Confirm the actual registration and tax class, whether VED is included in the lease, and who meets later increases. The Expensive Car Supplement is a car-tax rule, not a surcharge to assume for a TC39 van. The announced eVED mileage charge starts in April 2028 for electric and plug-in hybrid cars; vans are outside its launch scope. Check classifications rather than applying car BiK percentages or car tax thresholds to the whole van grid.

Tax information checked 29 September 2026 against HMRC van benefit guidance and GOV.UK. It is general information; your accountant should confirm your circumstances.

Browse vans by the job they need to do

Prefer to start with a make? Browse Ford, Volkswagen or Vauxhall, or use the make choices on van leasing. For model detail, see Ford Transit Custom and Vauxhall Vivaro. A live model page does not confirm supply of every version.

Compare business contract hire with personal contract hire before selecting the quote basis. For the optional service decision, read tyres and servicing.

Questions about van offers

Reading the payments

Why is the van’s monthly figure not the whole cost?

The initial rental, payment count, VAT, administration fee and any separate maintenance charge affect the scheduled total. Mileage, damage and early-termination charges depend on use and the agreement. Ask for a written breakdown before comparing offers.

Does ex VAT mean I will not pay VAT?

No. Ex VAT means the displayed amount excludes VAT. Ask for the amount payable including VAT where applicable. Whether a business can recover any VAT depends on its circumstances and the relevant tax rules.

Is the initial rental refundable when I return the van?

An initial rental is an advance lease payment rather than a refundable security deposit. Read the payment schedule and the agreement’s cancellation and termination terms before signing.

Vehicle and agreement fit

How do I check whether a van has enough payload?

Use the exact finished vehicle’s payload, plated gross weight and axle limits. Include the weight of people, tools, racking, accessories and the load. A body-size label or model-family figure is not enough.

Are servicing and tyres included in every offer?

Do not assume they are. Ask whether the quotation includes a maintenance package, which tyres and repairs it covers, and which costs remain yours. Inclusions depend on the funder and agreement.

Can I lease a van as a private customer?

Ask whether personal contract hire is available for the exact van and funder. Compare the VAT-inclusive cost and the full payment schedule. Finance remains subject to status, individual funder criteria and availability.

Availability, tax and enquiry

Does an in-stock listing promise a delivery date?

No. Confirm the vehicle’s status and the delivery arrangements before committing. Funder approval, documents and the supplying dealer still affect the process.

Will a double-cab pickup be taxed like a van?

Not necessarily. Many double-cab pickups fall under company car benefit rules for commitments from 6 April 2025, subject to transitional provisions. Income tax, VAT and vehicle tax classifications must be checked separately.

What should I send with a van enquiry?

Send the type and weight of your load, required dimensions and seats, annual mileage, intended term and business or personal use. Include charging access for an electric van and any conversion requirements. Ask for the exact derivative and full written terms.
