Ford leasing: choose the car around its daily job

Ford's car range covers very different working lives. A Puma can answer compact everyday travel, Kuga provides a family-SUV choice across petrol and hybrid systems, and Explorer and Capri offer different electric bodies. A passenger group needing sliding doors should begin with Tourneo Connect instead of trying to make an SUV solve every access problem.

The Mustang name requires particular care. Mustang Mach-E is an electric SUV, while the petrol Mustang is a V8 sports car. A driver choosing the latter for its character has a different tyre, insurance and fuel brief from a household considering a Mach-E. Neither should be described as just another trim of the other.

For Ford leasing, exact generation matters as much as model. The same retail name can cover more than one battery, motor and equipment set. A current brochure may therefore show a different vehicle from an older catalogue row. The useful comparison starts with the full offered specification, then keeps mileage, term and maintenance consistent.

Ford leasing: key facts

  1. Puma mHEV and Puma Gen-E have different energy routines: petrol without a plug versus battery-electric.
  2. Current MY27 Puma Gen-E uses 46.8 kWh usable capacity; earlier 43 kWh catalogue labels identify a different specification.
  3. The current Explorer and Capri Extended Range RWD benchmarks use 79 kWh usable batteries, distinct from earlier 52/77 kWh listings.
  4. Capri offers up to 572 litres of rear luggage capacity using its adjustable floor, against Explorer’s 470 litres: a scoped 102-litre difference.
  5. Tourneo Connect has five- and seven-seat configurations; the full body and fitted-seat arrangement must be confirmed.
  6. Ford standard passenger-car warranty is three years or 60,000 miles, subject to terms.

Compare Ford models and lease deals

Use this comparison to separate the vehicle decisions before comparing agreements. Model pages can contain several generations or bodies; specify the one you want.

Understanding the Ford powertrain choices

Puma EcoBoost mHEV uses petrol with mild-hybrid assistance and does not plug in. Puma Gen-E is fully electric. Distinguish ST-Line equipment from the separate Puma ST performance specification; similar styling does not establish the same engine or gearbox.

Kuga Full Hybrid suits a routine without external charging. Kuga Plug-in Hybrid needs a realistic opportunity to replenish its battery if electric local travel is part of the reason for choosing it. The sliding rear seat lets you trade passenger legroom against load space, so use the seating position your occupants need when testing luggage.

For towing, Ford publishes an up-to-2,100 kg benchmark for appropriately specified Kuga PHEV and Full Hybrid AWD versions. The exact derivative's approved braked-trailer limit, towbar and loaded weights still govern. Earlier 21–23 g/km PHEV catalogue descriptions and NI-marked 57–61 g/km entries must not be merged into a single tax or registration assumption.

Explorer is the more upright electric SUV comparison; Capri has a coupe-style outline and its own luggage arrangement. Ford's published rear-boot figures are 470 litres for Explorer and up to 572 litres for Capri using its adjustable floor. That 102-litre difference concerns the stated configurations and measurement positions. Check the actual load opening and rear headroom, not just the capacity total.

Ford business leasing

A business specifying several Fords should separate drivers by job. Regular client travel, equipment carrying and occasional passenger transport do not automatically call for the same model. Put charging access and overnight parking beside annual mileage for each driver. A Kuga PHEV that rarely receives a charge may behave very differently from its intended use case.

For a director comparing Puma mHEV with Gen-E, keep personal company-car tax distinct from the employer's hire cost. The electric percentage does not transfer to the mild hybrid. Ask the accountant to evaluate actual private availability and the written vehicle details, rather than selecting a tax band from the Ford badge.

VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.

The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.

Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.

Ford personal leasing

For personal use, shortlist the Ford that makes repeated tasks straightforward. Load a pushchair into Puma, set Kuga's rear seats for the family, or try Explorer and Capri with taller rear passengers. A large nominal boot can still have an opening or floor arrangement that does not suit your equipment.

A private lessee should compare energy, insurance and tyre costs alongside the contract. The employee BiK table is background for company cars, not a discount on PCH. State any replacement deadline and the equipment you will not compromise on so the adviser can investigate a specific car rather than an open-ended model name.

Ford company-car tax across the lease

Ford combines zero-emission EVs, non-plug-in hybrids, plug-in hybrids and petrol sports cars. Their benefit percentages must follow certified data and registration rules. Review every tax year crossed by the agreement, particularly for a Kuga plug-in with different emissions certification.

For private availability to an employee or director, multiply the actual P11D value by the applicable percentage to establish the annual benefit before adjustments; the driver’s income tax rate then determines personal tax. This is distinct from the business’s rental and from a sole trader’s own motoring treatment.

The retained examples are dated catalogue illustrations from 10 September 2026, not current vehicle quotations. They assume a full year, 40% income tax and no employee contributions or other adjustments. Different vehicles illustrate the formula, not a like-for-like saving.

These are conditional tax bands, not assigned rates for every Ford. Confirm the supplied car’s P11D, certified CO2, fuel type and registration date. Diesel supplements can apply where the required emissions certification is absent, subject to the annual maximum.

The electric-mile figures above are HMRC band thresholds, not promises of this car’s driving range. Newer plug-in hybrid certification can show more than 50 g/km. A temporary company-car easement may treat an eligible car as 1 g/km where the registration date, electric range and Euro-status conditions are met; it is not automatic and must not be transferred to lease-rental deductions. Check the vehicle documents and HMRC’s plug-in hybrid conditions with your accountant.

Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 27 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.

Road tax and costs across the term

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.

Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is £440 a year in 2026/27 for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.

Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.

Planning Ford fuel or charging costs

For current MY27 Puma Gen-E, Ford's guide identifies 46.8 kWh usable battery capacity. Select reaches up to 259 miles on the WLTP overall combined measure and Premium up to 251 miles. The quoted 10–80% high-power charging benchmark is 26 minutes at 100 kW. These current figures do not apply to earlier 43 kWh-labelled cars. Weather, wheel specification, arrival charge, battery temperature and charger delivery affect the outcome.

Current Explorer Extended Range rear-wheel-drive Style and Select use 79 kWh usable capacity, with up to 374 miles WLTP combined. The matching current Capri Extended Range RWD Select reaches up to 389 miles with the same stated usable capacity. Both have a quoted 29-minute 10–80% stop at up to 183 kW DC. Older 52/77 kWh and smaller 58 kWh descriptions require their own specification, not these newer benchmarks.

For MY26 Mustang Mach-E Premium RWD, Ford's current guide gives 88 kWh usable and up to 382 miles WLTP combined, with 10–80% quoted at 36 minutes using 150 kW DC. Older 91 kWh Premium and 72 kWh Standard Range entries differ. Match model year, wheels and drivetrain before comparing these laboratory range and controlled charging figures.

Plan an electric Ford around the tariffs and chargers you can actually use. A larger battery can change stop frequency, but it does not remove the need for a fallback charger or a reserve on colder motorway journeys. For Kuga plug-in use, separately estimate charged local travel and longer petrol-led trips.

Ford warranty and servicing

Ford's standard passenger-car cover is three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, under the applicable terms. A four-year contract or a driver covering substantial annual mileage can outlast it. Ask for the first-registration date and the documents applying to the actual vehicle, including any agreed extension.

High-voltage coverage is separate. Puma Gen-E's current UK guide describes eight years or 100,000 miles for the high-voltage battery and components, subject to conditions. That does not place every part of the car under eight-year cover. Capacity provisions, exclusions and the precise covered components need their own check.

Tourneo and Nugget-based vehicles may use different service or warranty schedules from a conventional passenger hatchback. Establish the applicable schedule before selecting optional maintenance. Ask what it adds for servicing, tyres, wear items and roadside support, and who authorises work if a defect occurs during the agreement.

Check the Ford details you will use every week

Tourneo Connect requires a seating brief before a trim shortlist. Ford offers five- and seven-seat configurations and regular or Grand bodies. Some catalogue descriptions explicitly identify seven seats; a PHEV badge alone does not prove the layout. Try access through the sliding doors and inspect luggage room with all required seats occupied.

The Transit Custom route in this car estate contains Nugget leisure derivatives. Keep that camper enquiry separate from a business panel van, and obtain its own vehicle-classification and tax advice. Passenger-car tables should not be applied automatically because a camper appears beside cars in a catalogue.

BlueCruise is driver assistance on compatible vehicles in designated Blue Zones. It does not remove the driver's responsibility to watch the road. Check fitted hardware, model-year eligibility, activation and whether access is included or requires a subscription. A photograph of controls or a similarly named pack on another Ford does not establish entitlement.

Write essential features into the enquiry: parking assistance for a difficult driveway, seat adjustment for long working days, towbar approval or connected features you will actually use. If a battery or equipment substitution is proposed, revisit the specification and running-cost comparison before accepting the revised car.

How IVF quotes your Ford lease

Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.

Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.

A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.

At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.

Ford leasing questions

What should a Ford business lease quote specify?

It should identify the complete derivative, model year, body, essential equipment and battery where relevant, alongside term, mileage and maintenance. Establish private availability separately for tax. A Puma, Kuga and Tourneo Connect serve different driver tasks even on the same agreement length.

How do I compare Ford lease deals fairly?

Hold the actual vehicle specification and contract assumptions constant. An earlier battery, a different seating layout or an omitted assistance pack can materially change what is being offered. Ask IVF to explain any substitution before treating the figures as comparable.

Is Puma Gen-E the same as Puma mild hybrid?

No. Gen-E relies on external charging, whereas EcoBoost mHEV uses petrol and does not plug in. Battery generation matters within Gen-E, while ST-Line equipment must also be distinguished from the separate Puma ST performance car.

Which Kuga hybrid should I consider?

Full Hybrid removes the need for an external charger. Plug-in Hybrid allows repeated use of charged electricity when your parking and journeys support it. Test rear-seat and luggage arrangements, then check the exact certified emissions and electric-range data for a company-car enquiry.

Does Capri have less luggage space because of its roof shape?

Do not decide from the outline alone. Ford quotes up to 572 litres with Capri’s adjustable floor, compared with 470 litres for Explorer. Those figures require the stated configuration and measurement position; try your luggage and rear passengers in both.

Can current Ford range figures describe every catalogue car?

No. Puma Gen-E, Explorer, Capri and Mach-E have catalogue entries from different battery generations. Match the supplied battery, motor, wheels, equipment and model year before using a WLTP range or a charging-time benchmark.

Are Mustang and Mustang Mach-E interchangeable?

They meet different requirements. Mustang is the petrol V8 sports-car line; Mustang Mach-E is a separate electric SUV. Body, passenger access, energy routine, insurance and company-car treatment must follow the actual vehicle.

Will every Tourneo Connect have seven seats?

No. Confirm fitted seating and body length in the quotation. Regular and Grand bodies and different powertrains need their own layout check. Assess luggage capacity with the number of seats you intend to occupy.

Does BlueCruise make a Ford autonomous?

No. It assists an attentive driver on eligible roads with compatible equipment. Confirm activation and access terms, including any subscription. The driver must continue watching the road and remains responsible for the vehicle.

What happens after the Ford warranty limit?

The agreement may continue after the manufacturer warranty expires by time or mileage. Establish any extension and maintenance provision before signing. Battery cover has separate terms, and routine servicing, tyres and return-condition charges are not automatically paid by a vehicle warranty.
