Intelligent Vehicle Finance arranges MG S9 leasing enquiries for businesses and private drivers needing a seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV. MG calls the model MGS9 Plug-in Hybrid in the UK. Compare Comfort and Premium around real passenger use, charging access and luggage needs, with availability and the exact vehicle confirmed in writing.
The MGS9 starts with a passenger problem: how often do you genuinely need more than five places, and what must travel with those people? For a family, the answer might include adults, children and weekend bags. For an SME director, it may include colleagues during the week and family use afterwards. A third row is valuable only if access, comfort and luggage space work in that real combination.
MG’s UK offering is a plug-in hybrid, combining a petrol engine with a battery that can be charged externally. It therefore suits a different routine from the fully electric IM6 or MGS6. The strongest practical case is a driver able to charge regularly for local journeys while retaining petrol capability for longer trips. It is less persuasive when there is no intention or convenient opportunity to plug in.
MG S9 and two alternatives: choose by the job the car must do
| Model | Buyer task | Decision to test |
|---|---|---|
| MG S9 | Seven-seat plug-in hybrid SUV | Test all required seats and bags together; establish regular charging. |
| MG S6 | Fully electric SUV alternative | Assess an electric routine where a third row is unnecessary. |
| MG IM6 | Premium electric SUV | Compare cabin priorities and charging requirements separately. |
IVF’s captured range lists two derivatives: 1.5 T-GDI PHEV Comfort and 1.5 T-GDI PHEV Premium, both automatic. MG’s UK product and launch information also identifies those two trim levels. This is a clearer choice than a long list of engine and battery combinations, but the equipment sheet still matters. Compare the quoted model year and fitted specification with the car you test.
Both versions belong to the same plug-in hybrid family. Do not infer a different electric range solely from a higher trim name. Wheels, certification and fitted equipment can affect homologated figures, so use the data supplied for the actual car. The Premium decision should be about features you want and will use, rather than assuming it changes the fundamental passenger task.
MG publishes a 24.7kWh battery and up to 62 miles of electric-only WLTP range for the UK MGS9 PHEV. Treat that as a standardised manufacturer benchmark for the specified vehicle, not a promise for every journey or every catalogue entry. Actual electric distance changes with temperature, driving style, speed, heating, passengers and load. Confirm the certified figure for the car in your quote.
On a long trip, the petrol engine provides another energy source, but that does not make electricity planning irrelevant. A PHEV’s published weighted fuel-consumption figure assumes a test pattern that includes charged driving. It should not be used to predict sustained motorway consumption with a depleted battery. Compare a realistic mixture of charging and petrol use before deciding the S9 is right for you.
Test third-row access with the second-row arrangement you expect to use. Child seats, adult legroom and the movement needed to reach the rear can conflict. If a particular seat must remain installed throughout the week, try that exact set-up. Check the handbook for approved child-seat positions and restraints rather than assuming every seating place accepts the same fitting.
For business journeys, consider the passenger experience after a full day as well as on a short demonstration. Access, temperature control, charging sockets and somewhere to put a coat can matter more than an extra screen. If your main task is regularly moving adults with substantial luggage, also examine an MPV layout such as the MIFA 7. Its different body shape deserves its own assessment.
MGS6 is a useful alternative when your requirement is an electric SUV and you do not need the S9’s third row. IM6 adds the premium electric SUV proposition within MG’s IM line. Neither comparison should be reduced to a badge or tax percentage. First decide whether seven seats are necessary, then whether you can accommodate a fully electric routine, and only then compare equipment and contracts.
The MG4 is further from the S9’s passenger brief, but it helps challenge an assumption. If most journeys carry one person and occasional passengers, a hatchback may cover the task without a large seven-seat vehicle. Conversely, a driver who routinely fills every seat should not choose a smaller car because it looks convenient in an empty-car test drive.
A plug-in hybrid has both a combustion engine and an electric system, so check the service requirements for the complete vehicle. Regular charging does not remove scheduled servicing. MG’s seven-year or 80,000-mile warranty is subject to conditions and is separate from consumables, insurance and any optional maintenance package in your agreement.
For a different MG body or product, compare MG IM5 leasing and the separate MG4 Urban leasing route. Confirm each model’s specification independently.
MG’s UK technical information gives 18g/km CO2 and 62 miles of electric range for the launch specification. If those certified figures apply to the supplied car, the relevant 1-50g/km and 40-69-mile band is 10% in 2026/27, 11% in 2027/28, 18% in 2028/29 and 19% in 2029/30. Confirm the vehicle documents; the petrol engine means the zero-emission electric-car band does not apply.
For an employee or director with private use, the taxable benefit normally starts with the car’s P11D value multiplied by the applicable BiK percentage. Personal tax then depends on the individual’s income tax rate and any relevant adjustments. The percentage is not the tax rate applied to the lease rental. A sole trader’s own business car use follows different rules.
The agreement can cross several tax years. Compare the whole path, not just the percentage in the year the car arrives.
Company-car BiK benchmarks, 2026/27 to 2029/30
| Tax specification | 2026/27 | 2027/28 | 2028/29 | 2029/30 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qualifying MGS9 PHEV: 1-50g/km and certified electric range 40-69 miles | 10% | 11% | 18% | 19% |
These are conditional tax bands, not assigned rates for every MG S9. Confirm the supplied car’s P11D, certified CO2, fuel type and registration date. Diesel supplements can apply where the required emissions certification is absent, subject to the annual maximum.
Use our company-car BiK guide alongside HMRC’s 2026/27 and 2027/28 tables and the published 2028/29 and 2029/30 changes. Tax information checked 28 September 2026 against the C1 ledger and its primary sources. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change; consult your accountant.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). For 2026/27, the standard annual VED payment after the first year is £200 before any supplement. First-year VED depends on CO2 and registration rules; zero-emission cars currently have a £10 first-year rate. These cash rates apply to 2026/27 only; later annual VED rates are not confirmed here. Ask how the funder treats tax increases during your agreement.
Expensive Car Supplement. The Expensive Car Supplement is £440 a year in 2026/27 for five years from the second licence. The list-price threshold is more than £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid cars, or more than £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. Use the published list price before discounts, including relevant options, and check the registration date. Plug-in hybrids do not receive the electric-car threshold. GOV.UK explains VED and the supplement.
Planned eVED. The government plans Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) from April 2028, alongside VED: 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. This is proposed for April 2028, subject to legislation and implementation; it is not a charge currently in force. The stated rates are planned starting rates, with CPI uprating proposed from 2029/30 and later cash rates not confirmed. An agreement spanning introduction needs the funder’s written treatment of the charge and later changes. Check the government’s consultation response and final implementation guidance before committing.
VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim 50% of the VAT on qualifying car rentals where private use is available, depending on circumstances and the normal VAT rules. Full rental-VAT recovery requires exclusive business use with no private availability. Maintenance can fall outside the rental block when it is genuinely optional, separately described in the contract and separately quantified on the invoice; recovery remains subject to normal VAT rules. Read HMRC’s motoring VAT guidance.
The hire-cost rules normally disallow 15% of otherwise deductible rentals for cars above 50 g/km, subject to their scope and exceptions. A company-car BiK easement does not establish relief from this restriction. Check HMRC’s car-hire deduction rules.
For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026, revised FRS 102 generally requires a right-of-use asset and lease liability for lessees, including small companies using Section 1A. FRS 105 lease accounting for eligible micro-entities was not changed in the same way. Contract hire therefore does not universally keep a car off the balance sheet. Ask your accountant to apply the right framework; HMRC summarises the accounting standards.
Flat Rate Scheme users generally cannot reclaim VAT on recurring car-hire payments. Ask your accountant which VAT regime applies before using the recovery examples above.
Tell IVF your annual mileage, regular passengers, essential equipment, charging access where relevant and preferred timing. Ask for the precise model year, derivative, options and registration status to be written into the quotation. The catalogue is a starting point; the offered vehicle and funder terms need confirmation.
Business Contract Hire is taken by the business; Personal Contract Hire is taken by the private individual. Both are subject to status and individual funder criteria. Compare the initial rental, term, mileage, maintenance and applicable fees on the same basis. An initial rental is part of the hire cost, not refundable security or ownership equity.
A manufacturer warranty starts under the supplied car’s warranty terms, normally from first registration. Its time and mileage limits may finish before your lease does. It is separate from optional servicing and tyre cover. Confirm maintenance inclusions, insurance responsibilities, tax provisions and early-termination terms before signing.
At the end of contract hire, return the vehicle; there is no contractual purchase option. Excess mileage, damage beyond the funder’s fair wear and tear standard, missing equipment or other contractual charges may still be payable. Check the return process before choosing your agreement.
Use MG leasing, MG S6 leasing, MG IM6 leasing, MG4 leasing, Maxus MIFA 7 leasing to narrow your choice or discuss a quotation.
Yes. The IVF route is labelled MGS9 and MG’s UK product name is MGS9 Plug-in Hybrid. The current UK model is a seven-seat petrol plug-in hybrid SUV, not a fully electric IM model.
MG UK states that the MGS9 PHEV is available to order, and IVF lists Comfort and Premium derivatives. Vehicle availability and the expected timing still need to be confirmed for your individual quotation.
MG specifies a 24.7kWh battery with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. Confirm the model year and technical specification of the offered Comfort or Premium before relying on any figure in your decision.
MG’s UK benchmark is up to 62 miles electric-only WLTP range. It is not a daily range promise: weather, speed, load and driving style affect results. Match the figure to the supplied derivative and its certification.
Charging is necessary to make regular use of its externally supplied electric energy. It can also use petrol, but buying into the plug-in hybrid idea without a practical charging routine changes the running-cost case materially.
The model has seven seats, but your combination of passengers and luggage needs a physical check. Test third-row access and the boot with all required seats upright. Do not use a seats-folded capacity as the seven-person answer.
Employee or director private use normally uses the car’s P11D value and the applicable PHEV BiK band. Confirm certified CO2 and electric range. A qualifying 40-69-mile, 1-50g/km car moves from 10% in 2026/27 to 19% in 2029/30.
Personal Contract Hire is available for assessment through IVF, subject to status, funder criteria and vehicle availability. Give the passenger requirements and realistic annual mileage so the proposal suits your actual use.
They are the two trim levels in the captured UK and IVF range. Request a side-by-side specification for the exact model year, then select the cabin and convenience equipment you value rather than assuming Premium changes the basic PHEV layout.
It should identify Comfort or Premium, model year, mileage, term, maintenance content and all applicable fees. Use the priced grid as the starting point, then confirm supply, tax provisions and return conditions in writing.
