Turn the car list into a useful shortlist

Use the car list to find a few versions that fit your driving, rather than compare every headline figure. Decide on space, powertrain, business or personal use and availability first. Then compare written quotations on matching terms. A listing is a starting point for an enquiry, not a confirmation of supply or finance.

  1. Set your essentials: Space, powertrain and equipment.
  2. Check the exact version: Model year, options and wheels.
  3. Compare written terms: Same term, mileage and VAT basis.

Write down what you cannot compromise on: seats, luggage space, gearbox, charging access and any essential equipment. Filter for those needs first. The Browse cars by type block above is a route into the body, powertrain and CO2 categories when you want a more focused list.

Set your essentials before using the filters

A director balancing business trips with family use may need rear-seat space and an easy boot opening. A sole trader carrying equipment may favour a different shape. Small fleets should check driver needs and policy requirements, while private drivers should start with their own journeys and parking.

Compare versions, not just model names

A single model can have different body shapes, engines, batteries, drivetrains and standard equipment. Check the precise version on the quotation, including options and wheels, against the listing you selected. A model photograph does not confirm the specification of the car being quoted.

If seating or boot space is critical, check it with the seats in the position you will use. An SUV label is not a promise of four-wheel drive. For an electric car, match charging compatibility to the places you expect to use; for a plug-in hybrid, plan how regularly you can charge.

Compare electric car leasing with hybrid and plug-in hybrid leasing. Confirm the exact derivative, model year and equipment before relying on any specification.

Decide between a new order and an available vehicle

The full list is a browsing catalogue. It does not mean every version is held in stock or can be supplied on the same terms. If you need a particular colour, equipment combination or timing, raise that at the enquiry stage.

The in-stock route helps you ask about cars that already exist or are allocated. Confirm the exact version and current allocation before making arrangements. Delivery remains dependent on funder approval, paperwork and the supplying dealer; a listing is not a delivery commitment.

Browse in-stock car options or use our guide to reading the latest car offers before comparing terms.

Put shortlisted cars on the same quotation basis

Check business or personal use before comparing figures. A VAT-exclusive business quotation is not directly comparable with a VAT-inclusive personal one. Match the initial rental, term, annual mileage, maintenance choice and all stated fees across your shortlist.

Include insurance, fuel or electricity and any excluded maintenance in your own running-cost comparison. Check road-tax changes, excess mileage and return-condition charges in the agreement. If a lower recurring amount needs more paid at the start, compare the total committed cost before deciding.

Read how business contract hire and personal contract hire work. The business leasing and personal leasing pages help you explore the relevant route.

Tax and road costs across the agreement

Put the tax years beside your shortlist, especially if a plug-in hybrid and a battery-electric car both fit your driving.

For a company car available for private use, including commuting, the benefit-in-kind (BiK) percentage is applied to its P11D value to calculate the taxable benefit. Your Income Tax rate then determines the personal tax. It is not a percentage of the lease payment.

Company-car BiK path by tax year
Car tax category2026/272027/282028/292029/30
Zero-emission car4%5%7%9%
Qualifying 1–50g/km car4% to 16%5% to 17%18%19%

In the qualifying 1–50g/km band, the exact percentage before April 2028 depends on official electric range. Cars above that band use their applicable CO2 bracket; diesel supplements can apply. The maximum appropriate percentage is 37% in 2026/27 and 2027/28, 38% in 2028/29 and 39% in 2029/30. Check the exact version against HMRC’s rates for each year.

Some plug-in hybrids can qualify for a temporary emissions easement. Check the registration date and Euro status as well as the CO2 and electric-range data against HMRC’s company-car guidance. Ask your accountant to confirm the treatment; a catalogue CO2 filter cannot settle it.

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)

For cars registered from April 2017, first-year VED follows the applicable emissions and fuel rules. In 2026/27 the standard annual rate from the second tax payment is £200 when paid annually. Electric cars are not generally exempt. Check which road-tax costs are included in your agreement and how later changes are handled; future rates can change.

Expensive Car Supplement

For 2026/27 the additional annual supplement is £440 for five years from the second tax payment. It applies above a list price of £40,000 for non-zero-emission cars, including hybrids, or £50,000 for qualifying zero-emission cars registered from 1 April 2025. The electric threshold applies from 1 April 2026. Check the original list price including relevant options, before discounts, and the registration date against the vehicle-tax rules.

Planned eVED from April 2028

The government plans an additional mileage charge from 1 April 2028: 3p a mile for battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell cars, and 1.5p a mile for plug-in hybrid cars. It is additional to existing VED, with inflation uprating planned from 2029/30. The July 2026 eVED policy paper sets out the proposed measure. Check the final rules and how your funder will handle it before relying on a whole-term cost.

Shortlisting car lease deals: your questions

Narrowing the list

Does every car in the list mean one is available to order?

No. Listings help you browse, but supply, specification and funder terms must be confirmed for the exact version. Tell us any essential requirements before relying on a listing or quotation.

Which filters should I use first?

Start with passenger and luggage needs, then body type and powertrain. Decide whether you need business or personal leasing and whether current stock matters. Compare a small shortlist on the same term, mileage and initial rental basis.

Where can I browse by body type?

Use the Browse cars by type block above the list. It links to the individual body categories, alongside electric, hybrid and CO2 routes. The car leasing gateway also explains how to choose between those routes.

Checking the version

Are the car photographs a specification guarantee?

No. Confirm the derivative, model year, equipment, wheels and any options in the written quotation. Photographs can illustrate a model without showing the exact version or colour being quoted.

Does SUV or 4x4 mean every listed car has four-wheel drive?

No. SUV describes a body style and the category can include two-wheel-drive cars. If driven wheels or traction equipment are essential, ask for the drivetrain of the precise version to be confirmed.

Can I compare a business quotation with a personal quotation?

Only after accounting for the VAT basis and who takes the agreement. Match the car, term, mileage, initial rental, maintenance and fees. Your accountant should confirm any business tax or VAT treatment for your circumstances.

Agreement and availability

How should I compare electric and plug-in hybrid cars?

Start with reliable charging access and your actual journeys. Check the exact version, running costs and multi-year company-car tax where relevant. A plug-in hybrid needs regular charging to make useful use of its electric capability.

What is different about the in-stock car list?

It is a route for enquiries about cars that already exist or are allocated. Confirm that the vehicle remains available, its exact specification and the supplying dealer arrangements. Funder approval and paperwork still apply.

What happens at the end of a contract hire agreement?

The car is returned under the agreement, which does not give you a contractual option to buy it. Mileage above the allowance, damage outside the agreed wear-and-tear standard and other stated charges may be payable. Ask about those terms before signing.
